It's Obama/Biden!

I have a question for the Democrats (& this is a serious one, with no sarcasm intended or implied. Really)

Senator Biden has run for President (twice??) and has not even come close to getting nominated. Since he has not captured the imagination or the support of his party, how will he becoming Sen Obama's running mate help?

Like I said, no jokes intended. I'm just not sure I see how this pick as a running mate will really help his chances of election in the fall.

He is a well respected voice in foreign policy.

Honestly, I agree with Aristocath. It makes little difference election-wise; we're voting for Prez more than VP. I happen to like Biden a lot (though my fave in the primary initially was Richardson), but it isn't a make-or-break decision; the people on Obama's short list were all perfectly great. I think Obama and McCain could choose poorly and have a bad VP affect them more than a solid choice like Biden, but it would be difficult for them to really make that mistake and choose someone who would truly suck.

One thing that I definitely like about Biden is that I don't think he'd be a yes man.

Biden is an excellent choice, not that the VP has much pull historically speaking with the exception of course of one Mr Dick Cheney. Having said that I think Biden is a great choice considering the other options out there. I feel as though his political track record speaks for itself both positively and negatively, but at least he has a track record to fall back on during the VP debates and can only make Obama look legitimate. Great choice but look out for the Clinton circus and the convention I am still not convinced that she has put her aspirations aside I feel a powerplay coming on that will divide the party.

If he needs someone to make him look "legitimate" why should we elect him. I want someone that is legitimate all on his own.

As far as Obama choosing Biden, excellent choice.

Take notice who doesn't like the Biden choice and making it known. Like they would vote for Obama if he chose J. Christ.

Take notice of those who are praising the Biden choice. Like they wouldn't vote for Obama if he chose Lucifer.

Could any choice have been safer? I'm not really surprised or against it but I'm not particularly inspired either.

As for McCain's choice, I disagree that it's unimportant. Many people have spoken with concern over McCain's age so I would think that the 2nd in line would be important in case he would become ill. You just never know sadly enough.

From a political demographic, Hiliary would have been the safest choice. Clearly ego (and baggage) got in the way of forming that ticket - on the part of one, but possibly both of them.

I don't know that an "inspiring choice" was necessarily the goal. A safe choice, definitely.

This is a good point.

I like Biden after watching him so many times on those shows like George Stephanopolis and Meet the Press. He has already been on the national political stage and is somewhat of a known quantity - let's see how that works against whoever McCain picks.

It's hard to campaign against someone without coming out with a sound bite that can be used against you later. Remember when George HW Bush called Reagan's economic plan "voodoo economics". It didn't make a whole lot of diffference when election day came around.

The LAST thing I would want is some unknown with who knows what skeleton in his closet so the press can go all hysterical just before the convention - who can forget Dan Quayle coming out of left field, Thomas Eagleton with his Electroshock treatments when McGovern ran or (god help us) John Edwards with the love child.

As for Jindal - I'm sure you have to be "squeeky clean" to get elected governor in Louisiana. Please God, let McCain pick him. I can't wait.

I think letting Dick Cheney have so much power as vice president was Bush's choice - but I wouldn't expect other presidents to cede as much to the VP as W did. Ultimately it makes the President look weak. Perhaps Obama (rightfully so) intends for the VP to play a smaller role.

I thought this to be an interesting comment considering Biden's health history. Guess who would be next in line if anything should happen to him!

Not really. Many Hillary supporters want to vote for her as POTUS, not VP, there are many on the Rep. side who hate her with a passion, she was polling worse vs. McCain than Obama was, and for those who are full of glee over Biden's previous comments about Obama--compare Biden campaign sound clips to Hillary's.

Great point. :)

Seriously I dislike this kind of thinking but I hear it constantly. I refuse to let age be a factor for me but coworkers and family keep asking this question about McCain so I wonder if some people aren't at this point waiting for McCain's VP choice.

I think that Clinton and Obama could have overcome that if handled right. They are certainly good enough speakers. I just don't think that they could get past the bad feelings.

I don't think we will really know why she wasn't picked for VP. I certainly would have welcomed it. But no, I don't think you can overcome the inexplicable hate of Hillary by many conservatives.
