We just got back late last night from AKL. We had a great trip and got a fantastic upgrade to a savanna view. When we checked in Sept 1st, I mentioned that I had booked a pool view room using the AP discount and had requested 'nice view on Zebra trail' and asked if we got it. The CM looked at the screen and said that as a matter of fact we had a savanna view on the Arusha savanna. I was thrilled and told him I had booked a pool view and would have been happy with that. He laughed, looked at my elderly mom, and said we got it because of her. He then laughed and said no, the room had been assigned prior to our arrival and he actually didn't know why we got the free upgrade, but to enjoy it. We were in room 2409, which was a perfect location. If you walk out the lobby and took the stairs to the right like you were going out onto the Arusha savanna, there is a hallway off the right, just before you go out onto the observation deck or outside to the savanna. We were just two doors down that hallway, from where you go out to Arusha rock. We were just steps from the Arusha savanna and lobby. There is also a short hallway back there that goes back towards the elevators and overlooks Boma. It's right over the Boma restrooms on the same level as the lounge, so we were also very close to the restaurants and pools.
Crowds were really low all week with most waits 5-15 minutes, so the lodge felt really quiet, which is probably why we got the upgrade. Oh, they were changing all the locks out while we were there. Now instead of inserting your key into the lock, you just tap the metallic strip against a little metal plate on the door knob area, where the key used to go and the door unlocks. Housekeeping also left a note on our bed and left a message on the phone to be sure and not leave any personal items on the beds, because they were going to be switching out the headboards during the week too. We got the note two days before we left, but they still hadn't switched them out by the time we left. The door lock was changed the next day after we got the message about it though.
The only thing that I didn't like was really minor, but very distracting all the same. We had an
ECV for my mom, so used a rental car and her handicap tag, so we could park in the handicapped parking. Which means that as you come out of the front doors, you turn right and walk down that sidewalk (opposite direction from the buses, past bell services/valet guys) to get to the handicapped parking lot. Whoever, was in the second room above that walkway apparently washed clothes in the sink, then hung them over the balcony railing to dry. We're not talking just shorts and tshirts, but lacy bras and panties and mens underwear were hanging out there every single day when we walked past. I just thought it was really tacky and was surprised that management didn't say something to them about it.
