About Me/Introduction

Hello and welcome to my first pre-trip and trip report. Your guide today will be figmentedfollies, better known as Elizabeth in the offline world and sometimes as Lis for those who know me outside of the disboards (there’s stuff outside the disboards? Shocking, I know).

Simon_amstell_buzzcocks_shocked_and_appalled.gif

I’m 28 years old and the Disney love was fostered in me (possibly, probably accidentally by my well meaning parents) and this will be my tenth, count it tenth trip down to the World. I’m usually able to get down to WDW every two years or so over my birthday when it’s the cheapest and the crowds are at their lowest.

A buddy and I during my last trip:

Jk4fU4T.jpg

Especially since Disney has made their switch over to MDE and Fastpass+ I have taken over primary planning of our family (my mother and I, as my father is very firmly in Camp Anti-Florida) trips down to the World. I don’t mind as I love doing the research and making the plans and pouring over all options. What fastpasses to select? Where to stay? Most importantly, where to eat?

I don’t mind being the logistics queen (trademark pending) because it lets me extend my Disney vacation as I count down the days. It's a running joke between my friends... and pretty much anyone that knows me. I can easily plot out a trip over brunch, if people only followed my advice...

This will be my first solo trip, after previously going with my parents and then with my mom after my dad decided he’s prefer to stay in chilly CT with the cats than venture down to the House of Mouse every few years. Oh well his loss. But this is a truly last minute trip and though there was a chance that my mom might tag along, this has primarily been conceived of as a solo trip so I can do what I want, when I want. I won’t have any bed times and if I want to have that cupcake for breakfast I totally will. (No I won’t, but the ability is still there.)

This is my first (pre)trip report, mostly because I don't have anyone to share the details with and squeal over, so please be kind, but most importantly please, please, please offer any insight and advice. I may be a Disney regular, but I can always learn something new.

Well you're not coming with me and I can't skype you the WHOLE time.

How the Trip Came About:

This trip was originally supposed to be a girls get together with a pair of gals I’ve gotten to know online. Just because we’ve never spoken face to face doesn’t mean these ladies know me inside and out. Unfortunately, finances being what they are meant we had to move the trip to October…and Halloween, so I’m not complaining.

This may or may not be an accurate representation of us. I'll leave you to decide who is who:
20140712011353

So this is a scouting trip. Right. Absolutely. Scouting. (Maybe if I say it loud and often enough I’ll begin to believe it.)

ANYWAY.

January 15th I opened my email to look at the Mousesavers’ Newsletter that gets delivered once a month. I was reading through it and a) saw that Disney was offering discounts of up to 30% off their hotel rooms and b) realized I was still holding some dining reservations for 3 or 4 people when no trip was planned. I went to go cancel them and then my mouse slipped and I was looking at the new Spring prices on Disney’s website. Then Orbitz sent me an email and when I bothered to look at the find print, I find to my pleasant surprise that their 15% coupons were no longer limited to a maximum $150. I just couldn’t say no to just taking an itty bitty, teeny weeny, look. I mean, it couldn’t hurt, right?

Port Orleans-French Quarter, even without the Disney discount, was COMPLETELY reasonable $1094 for February 26-March 2. So my plot... er, I mean PLAN was beginning to take form.

I was already planning to purchase an annual pass for the original dates of the girls only trip, so I had the money set aside. It would still be good for October and (hopefully) for a January 2017 trip as well. That meant park tickets were taken care of.

I am a member of JetBlue’s frequent flier program and have the AmEx to prove it. (Which is apparently going away. Rude.) Since last January, when I last booked a free flight, I’ve racked up enough points for another flight. Airline tickets can be checked off the list, well at least the budget...

That only left hotel room and actually requesting the time off. Oh yeah. That. Months before I had already mentioned to my boss that I was hoping to take time in February/early March while the museum I work for is closed for the season. I never got around to it because the original trip was canceled and I couldn’t find anything nice enough to take it’s place. More on hotel rooms later.

If only money grew on trees.

Which came first, the ADRs or the Hotel Room?

Since this all started because I needed to cancel my ADRs, I figured I should see what I could get for one person, understanding that there was a chance that I would have to cancel them either because I couldn’t get time off or because at the last minute my mother would want to come with me as my father is convinced I won’t enjoy myself on a solo trip. But since I was operating on a solo mentality, I decided that while this trip might not be heavy on the table service meals, I should at least attempt a few that would never interest other travelling buddies.

So where to first? Well my first thought was the Crystal Palace, because who wouldn’t want to be in the park before rope drop? Unfortunately, no tables were open until 10:15 on ANY of the days I was there. Boo.

So it was off to look at other options. Be Our Guest was booked solid for prepark shenanigans and I wasn’t terribly interested in the Garden Grill over in Epcot… but wait! There’s more! Tusker House seems to have some really great reviews for their breakfasts and while Animal Kingdom is never terribly crowded first thing in the morning (or at least that’s what it seems with AM EMH), it could totally be fun.

giphy.gif

Well that was taken care of and there was one more thing that I knew I just had to do and that was book a Fantasmic! package for one night I was there. I remember stalking the threads back in July/August when the calendars were just coming out and Fantasmic was not listed ANYWHERE for February. I was bereft, as it is my favorite show/spectacle and wanted to share it with my friends. My last trip (January 2015) I had discovered the dinner package which is basically getting a meal and a free fastpass to go with it. My initial ADR for was for Mama Melrose’s, which I’ve had good luck with over the past few visits. Good, solid, Italian food.

Then, I thought why am I limiting myself. Why not splurge a little and book the Brown Derby? I looked at the price for the Fantasmic Package ($58/pp for anyone that’s doing the math) and then looked at the menu and decided that it was worth it for a once every ten visits meal.

Then I got word that my mom would NOT be joining me on this lovely, spur of the moment trip, which just confirmed suspicions I already had. So after work, I hurried my butt over to Orbitz and Disney (two separate windows) to compare prices and availability with my new handy-dandy Annual Pass Membership.

Only now I was wondering if I really, really, really wanted to be at Port Orleans-French Quarter. Riverside was a little cheaper because Disney was offering their discount, but if I end up getting a Tables in Wonderland card it could be used in POFQ's foodcourt, but not POR's (conceivably because POFQ doesn’t have a table service restaurant). Decisions, decisions.

Then, since I was stuck on which moderate to choose, I began looking at Deluxe resorts because in my last visit we were able to stay at the Beach Club, which I absolutely loved, even more when they graciously upgraded us from a Garden Room to a Concierge Level Water View. Yeah. We were stunned. And spoiled. And how could I go back to a moderate after that?!

Down the slippery slope I went until I just finally decided to click on it and ended up at the Poly page. I tried to talk myself out of it. (Twice as expensive as either Port Orleans!) But really, I know myself. I am going to want to spend as much time in the Magic Kingdom possible (especially since my beloved MGM, I mean Hollywood Studios, is all but gutted) and the monorail cannot be beat.

So I made the decision, rationalizing the way only a true Disney fan could. It hurt. And I might have to skimp on everything else, but knowing I have just the monorail to look forward to when I want to escape from all the noise and hubbub? Yes please. Ticket for one. Now to only wait until I get home.

I bet you can guess what happened next…

…Go on guess.

It completely sold out on Orbitz with the nice little discount (It was $1990 the night before, I swear!) and unless I wanted to pay $2700 to stay at the Polynesian.

anigif_enhanced-buzz-30747-1430813648-15.gif

I honestly thought about it, but even I could not rationalize such a thing so I spent forty minutes or so dickering over what hotel I should be looking at now that I wasn’t going to spend my days in the Polynesian Village. Ultimately, the Wilderness Lodge won out because that’s where I originally wanted to stay last year, but they were sold out of non-bunk bed rooms and my mom and I weren’t having any of that. So we were off to the Beach Club, but that is the topic for a failed trip report.

So, with my hotel in hand I scouted the room options on Orbitz and Disney’s websites and gave our friendly Disney Vacation Advisors a call just in case they could find me a better deal. Though I apparently had a Unique Offer code that was even better than the Passholder discount, none of them could beat Orbitz so off I went to play travel agent.

Thankfully, linking the Orbitz reservation into MDE was relatively painless, but then it was off to book airfare and since I was using airline miles my biggest decision was checked bag or no checked bag. And then if I wanted to catch the 2:30 pm flight or the 8:30 am flight. I initially thought I could go into work for a half day on Friday but let’s be honest here, I would be utterly useless as I checked what time it was every five minutes. And really, who wants to be at work for 3 hours anyway when I could give myself 6 extra hours of possible park time.

tumblr_nb2u2aJ7sU1rn71qzo9_400.gif

So after making my selections I go back to pay… except we can’t because my father linked our frequent flier accounts and since he’s head of household he had to log in so I could actually book my ticket. What should have taken 20 minutes (because the JetBlue’s website actually hates me) took more than hour.

Adding the Magical Express information was even MORE complicated. While I knew that Disney couldn’t change my reservation since I made it through Orbitz, I thought they would be able to at least add the DME and some comments (like birthday celebrations!) but no, that had to go through Orbitz, though the very nice agent told me that http://www.disneymagicalexpress.com/usa would allow me to input a MDE reservation, but the website only worked in Chrome, not Firefox or Safari, and though I got an email it’s not appearing in MDE just yet.

So let’s cross our fingers and hope for the best.

Guilt is my middle name

So I had everything booked. I was happily flipping through Disney’s pages trying to book my FP+ and ADRs when my father peered over my shoulder and asked where I was staying and the dreaded question ‘How much is that going to cost exactly?’ because he just doesn’t get Disney math. And while he wasn’t making a ‘value judgement’ he pointed out that between having to purchase a new laptop right before Christmas and saving for grad school come this fall that maybe I shouldn’t be spending as much.

6180282.gif

I brushed it off because hello, it’s DISNEY. Then I slept on the issue and woke up knowing that while I REALLY want to be at the Wilderness Lodge, I really cannot justify the cost if I’m there by myself and if I want to return in October. So I hopped on Orbitz to spec out POFQ once more and for the ****s and giggles called Disney to see if my PIN/Unique Offer Code was applicable. It must have been because Disney came out to be about $75 more and since I didn’t want to deal with the hassle I went through the night before with coordinating the MDE through Orbitz as well.

The Disney bubble is nice, isn’t it? Now to tackle the thought of renting a car or not. On one hand, I could get out to Disney property quicker than taking the MDE (and possibly swinging through the supermarket before I get there), but on the other hand driving in an unfamiliar city with tolls. With my poor navigation skills you KNOW I am going to get lost. At least once. I really don’t want the aggravation.

tumblr_mkemuksUhq1qba5clo1_500.gif
Renting a car is good for when you want to get to point a to point b quickly on property, but see above as to why I laugh and laugh and laugh when people tell me be the navigator. Don’t they know I failed map reading in Girl Scouts? Plus, I might as well have stayed offsite as I would have gotten free parking with the annual pass…

anigif_enhanced-buzz-5863-1382392556-10.gif

I think, at this point, I’ll stalk the car rental prices and if I am able to see a VW Jetta dip below $150 I will go for it. It’s Disney math. It might be a little fuzzy and you might have to tilt your head to the left just right but it totally works.

9:15 PM – Arrive home to the real world (and begin to immediately plan the next trip)

I'm not fully satisfied with this as I'm still worried that I'm overbooking myself. I sort of wanted this trip to be a 'go as you please' trip, especially as a single rider you sometimes luck out in terms of waiting in line. Though I also have no idea how the lines are going to be then. I've been in mid-January. I've been in Mid-March, but never end of February. Hopefully it won't be horrific.

Disney tells me it's 35 days but it seems much longer.

Packing List Part 1

More importantly, what magic band should I get? I still have my 2015 band, which ostensibly should work. And I think I get an Annual Pass band, right? Or do I only get that after I exchange my voucher for an activated card? (Can someone confirm as my packet is supposed to arrive after the 30th.) I really don’t need a third one, but I like to decorate mine with nail polish because YAY color.

Also what should I wear. I know weather in Florida is fickle as a cat, but I’ve been there in mid-January when you needed gloves and a hat and when you just need a light sweater at night. I’ve also been in mid-March and it was really warm (and that was before I knew about the free ice trick). I know I could just look it up online, but people at the Dis are a wealth of information and I’ve learned so much in the short time I’ve been stalking all the pages.

I oddly find all the accessories and miscellaneous bits easier to pack. Toiletries, park essentials, technology bits, books. Those are easy and I just need to make a list and check them off. Putting together outfits? You’re lucky if I’m able to that in the morning before work, let alone before a vacation.

So far I’ve been able to break everything down into these categories:

Park Bag
Magic Band
Travel Wallet (license, a credit card, some cash, AAA Card, and Annual Passholder Card)
Croakies/Eyeglasses retainer
Sunscreen
Camelbak filter water bottle
Sunscreen
Paperback Book
Travel Journal
Camera
Battery pack for camera/iPhone
Ziploc plastic bags for water rides

Carry On
Yoga pants (for sleepwear and park wear in a pinch)
1 day’s worth of clothes
Computer + Charger
Miscellaneous cables (iphone, camera, and fitbit)
Extra pair of shoes (either flats or flip flops)
Swim towel
(Everything that appears in the park bag except sunscreen)

Checked Bag
4 days worth of clothes
Swim suit + swim pants
Toiletries
Sunscreen
Extra books
Second pair of extra shoes
Extra books

I am probably missing a few things here, but I won’t really know until I start pulling things together/pack them. It doesn’t look like a huge list, but I have a feeling I’ll over pack like I always do. Remember, self, that you need to leave room for a souvenir or two.

Change of Plans
THIRTY DAYS UNTIL DISNEY.

tumblr_njr9nvsWeW1si3gq6o1_r1_500.gif

So I have been reading other planning journals and trolling around the Disboards as I go back and forth if I want to get the Disney Dining Plan (Quick Service) or if I don’t. Maybe I just want the rapid refill mug. Or maybe I’ll just wing it because I want to have the maximum flexibility possible as to enjoy this solo trip. Much of this includes making sure I get to see the fireworks in each of the parks. I don’t mind ‘sacrificing’ some of my fastpasses for this.

And then you know what I realized what this entire trip is about?

tumblr_nb1ybjmxqh1r4grm0o1_500.gif

So I've decided that I'm going to do the Star Wars Dessert Party at Hollywood Studios because that would not be something that would normally appeal to my normal travelling buddy (my mother) and I’m not sure how long the fireworks and party are going to be around so it might not be available in October. (Plus we might not have time.)

I did end up canceling my first Be Our Guest reservation on arrival day. I still don’t know if I’ll be getting a car or anything like that and I don’t want to be on the hook for not quite making it because of Disney transportation. Plus, I might want to try something else and new.

The good news is that my Magic Band has shipped. Once I have that I’ll have a fun two to three days decorating it. Then I’ll have to actually narrow down my packing list to something more official.

I now officially have a packable backpack and reusable cotton shopping bags. I figure instead of just getting pictures/autographs I’d like something a little more permanent, plus I always seem to need a bag for something. Only 30 more sleeps until Disney....
