NO DISNEY VISA FOR CANADIANS:(

Received my Disney Mag today, just started reading when the page that read "Top Secret" caught my eye.

It's the ad for the new VISA from Capital One. No mention about Canucks not getting one so I called!

GOT REJECTED!:o

So it's true, only US residents are allowed. Too bad 'cause if you apply now you can have "Cardmember Since" "DAY 1" on it!

IMHO, This sucks!

Thanks for letting me vent!

Hi, Scratch. This has more to do with international banking requirements than it does with Disney. If Canadians want a Disney Visa, we'll have to convince a Canadian bank of the worth of a Disney affinity card ;)

I think this stinks. I tried to sign up for the email notification and was rejected because I'm not a US resident. It appears that Disney isn't interested in giving us a way to get any discounts although I know about the special Cdn ticket but that's only good for certain times of the year and isn't guaranteed each year.

It's not fair.

and this could prove dangerous!LOL

Instead of contacting a bank, I contacted CAA! They just transferred over to VISA Travellers' Cheques, so why can't they offer a DISNEY VISA CARD!

I call upon all CAA members, e-mail them and ask about getting a DISNEY VISA!

HEY, it's worth a try!

Scratch42 - I don't want to add fuel to the fire - but when we moved down here we kept a few of our CAD dollar credit cards, and it hasn't been a problem.
However - I agree with northernmouse - it has to do with International banking laws. It is so different down here because they have so many banks, and the paperwork involved to get the littlest thing done......agh! Once the request came for "out of country" I'm sure they didn't even look at the possibility due to how complicated it would be under the US systems. (This is just MHO - I'm not in banking) Canadian banks are so far ahead in terms of technology, etc.
My suggestion would be to contact Capital One in Canada (they have a Canadian division) and see if they could offer a equivalent Disney Visa for Canada???
Good luck!

Capital One, Canuck Division.

Thanks Yzma and Kronk.

I will definately look into that One, Capital One!LOL

UPDATE:
Capital One in Canada is MASTERCARD!
Can't win for trying!LOL

Sorry about that Scratch42 - I knew there was a Capital One - but didn't know it was Mastercard!!
Oh well.....
PS - is there anyone at Disney Canada you can talk to????

I'm still going to try with a U.S. mail box. (never take NO for an answer)
Northernmouse- is this because they can't do a credit check outside the U.S.? or they can't be bothered mailing it to Canada?

I believe it's because they will require a US social security number for the application for a credit check and a CAD Social Insurance won't work. They won't (and don't) consider credit history from outside the US in most circumstances. It's a long process to get a US card if you don't have a credit history, and they will not even consider if you don't have a social security number. Maybe someone who is International banking could shed some official light on this - but the above is from my experience here. Sorry!

Yzma and KronK: you're right about the long arduous process. There are so many reasons why it's tougher: credit history (your Canadian history doesn't matter too much), employments status, social security, etc.

My husband worked in the US for almost two years, along with a bunch of other Canadian guys. Of those who lived there (the DH was a 'transient ;) on the road all the time), almost all had a difficult time re-establishing credit, even with US residency, social security #'s, and and US employment. We gave up on the US bank Visa, and ended up having to get a US$ Visa and chequing account from TD.

Acquiring a credit card is very different from using your bank card to access cash.

The Canadian Capital One MasterCard situation is a complication, because I bet Capital One and Disney have an exclusivity arrangement, so Disney can't use a different bank. And if Capital One up here is aligned with MasterCard, they can't offer Visa. So it could be Disney doesn't have an easy solution to this exclusion. But I bet they really are working on it, because the Canadian market is important. (Maybe partnership in AirMiles or Aeorplan and bypassing a bank, with the ability to apply points to discounts from those organizations might make sense. AirMiles didn't take off in the US, so Disney may not realize how big it is here. This is just a suggestion, though; I have no idea what they might be looking at) Whatever the option, I doubt it will be quick. Sigh.

Disney did a credit check on us when we got our DVC membership and it does show up on your credit report in Canada.

Yes, I've been told by someone who was in banking in Canada that they can check your CAD credit history. However, credit cards seem to be such a different animal down here. My experience is - no US social security number - (hence no US credit history) - no credit cards - despite the fact that we get weekly so called "pre-approved" card applications in the mail. I tried to apply for one - and got turned down - no US credit history!

I wonder about how the restriction of being a Canadian resident is applied if you have dual citizenship? I have a social security card And a U.S. credit history.

Still the restriction applies to all Canadian residents, you must have a U.S. address.

Scratch, I agree with you! This sucks! I got a letter back from Disney saying that special offers are made to Canadians, but the ticket offer is only good certain times of the year. Florida residents get ticket offers as well as being able to use the new Visa.

If Bank One is a Mastercard here then Why not a Disney Mastercard that is only for Canadian residents? I fail to see how this would effect the Disney Visa in the U.S.

Yes, it is complicated but I think Disney made a bad move with this one. Not considering that many of us in Canada would not like this one bit was not at all a good move.

What I am most angry about is the silly explanation I got from Disney as to why we aren't going to be offered a Disney Visa of our own.

As a thank you for having been a loyal Disney Club member I got offered the Disney Magazine half off for one year. LOLOLOLOL.

Thanks for nothing Disney!

And thanks for letting me vent too but I'm with Scratch on this one!

what they are offering other DC members!

How Rude!

Makes me just want to go up to the gates and just say

"Oops, Sorry, I'm Canadian, You don't want my business!"

And just walk away! LOL:p

LOLOL Scratch! I got an e mail inviting me to sign up for the Visa today. I don't think the points with the card add up to much. The other discounts that will be offered sound good though.

I'm waiting to see what does replace the DC for us. I think something will.:D

I hope so, it sure saved me money on those dinner shows!

I suggest the Canadian pass deal be made available year around.:p lol like that's gonna happen!!

They are only offering 1%?!?!?

One would have to spend millions in order to get something worthwhile!LOL

I want the DC back!

I sent my letter to DC and got an email back that was merely an automated response  that was meant for Americans ie. Check out our new VISA! I then fired off a second email, and got an "apology" for the non-Disney like letter. Then I got a third email which was very enlightening. Here's what "Brenda" wrote:
Thank you for your recent correspondence.
We appreciate the fact that you have taken the time to convey your thoughts to us. Disney always encourages our Guests to send their opinions regarding any issue.
However, the Disney Visa credit card that is coming out is not replacing the Disney Club. Unfortunately, we do not have the detailed information about the new credit card to provide you at this time. We only know that
it will launch in March 2003.
Once again, thank you for your correspondence.

Hope everyone read the part:
However, the Disney Visa credit card that is coming out is not replacing the Disney Club.

UGH!!!!!

Got the email invite about the Disney Visa -- doesn't sound like it's that great a deal really unless the bonus offers are good. 1% isn't a very high payback since the GM Visa gives 5%.

Still not happy about being excluded esp. since it's isn't replacing the DC but we haven't been given anything at all.

Having the Cdn ticket deal all year wouldn't do us any good because we can't stay at WDW for enough time to make it pay. I would appreciate the Cdn at par resort prices though -- they can make them permanent. :p

I like the year 'round 'at par rate' for Canadians ... Even though the dollar is gaining value, some of the resorts are still pricey. I'm interested in knowing what will replace DC.
