Is your state running out of gas?

We filled up on Monday when we were out grocery shopping and our car was under a half tank. Yesterday my DH filled our gas can for the tractor so he can cut the grass. Not buying anymore than usual. I need to go to the local Disney store to make a return but I think I will wait on that. I think I will put off any unnecessary use of the car until this is over. I'm in NJ and hopefully things will remain ok here. I will say the gas prices have gone up 10 cents since last week.

OK, I'm going to somewhat blame the media. Just got home awhile ago and happened to go to our Channel 6 website (out of Lansing) They're totally discussing the gas shortages with many pictures and small print underneath the pics that have NOTHING to do with Michigan. I feel it should just be a little blurb somewhere. But that's MHO!

Not sure why you blame the media. They are just trying to survive with a dying business model. If you just reported straight news with out any hype or bias you would be just like CSpan which has terrible ratings. No for profit media company could operate like that. Look at the highest rated "news" programs on TV. They are the ones that are the worst but they are making huge profits. I don't like them but I understand why they operate the way that they do.

Yep. Our local paper has a headline about gas shortages today... you have to read to the third paragraph before you come to the part that says "in some southeastern states". But there was a guy filling up an entire truck bed FULL of gas cans this morning at our local station and the lines have been just on the edge of fitting in the parking lot every time I've gone by in the last two days, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them run out of the cheaper grades of gas, at least, because of the unexpected demand surge that the media coverage of shortages 500+ miles away is creating. And since we only have one station in town, that's a shortage of sorts even if it is entirely manufactured.

I'm not worried about it, exactly, but I do plan to be more careful than usual about pushing my car right to the edge of its miles-to-empty predictions just in case the local station does have issues. At the very least, I'll make sure I don't fall below the 30 miles or so that it takes to get into suburbia to fuel up.

As of this afternoon, pretty much 90% of the stations surrounding me are out of gas. Total panic buying this morning. We're told that there is sufficient gas (as of now) in the larger tank farms and the state of emergency in VA will allow them to drop lower than normal, but everyone one went out and bought gas between yesterday and today and none of the stations could keep up with that. I'm sure they'll replenish as quickly as the tankers can deliver it.

We have no gas around my house in metro Atlanta. What is really concerning is the lack of info coming from colonial. No statements from them yesterday or today - they are headquartered not too far from my house, so our local news has been covering the story heavily. Seems as if there were any potential good news, colonial would make a statement and let everyone know. If they said the pipeline would be restarting, it would make some of the panic buying subside. Makes me wonder about the “Friday” restart - not a peep since Monday on that goal.

I could be wrong but I think the poster was more trying to draw attention to the fact that because the states most impacted by it weren't really called to attention (thus the comment about small print) it can cause people in areas not impacted to go out and get gasoline thus causing issues (including price increases) in areas without supply issues caused by the hack. That may happen regardless just by reporting it but you can still make it very evident don't do xyz but instead do abc in areas not directly impacted by the hack.

We are in NC now, about 100 miles north of SC border. Stopped on way down from MD in Bowling Green, VA and Micro, NC and had no issues at all getting gas. Lines at bigger truck stops and busy exits, no lines at smaller facilities-
Plenty of traffic, folks getting gas somewhere.
Hopefully our luck holds- but so far we aren’t having any issues. If you are coming north or south on 95 try the smaller stations for less wait.
Didn’t pay attention to price per gallon so can’t say on that.
