is this rude? re: dining out

On the first cruise, our server was pretty overbearing with his suggestions. One time, I asked for the main item off one thing, with the side dish of another. The server really was condescending "are you sure you want that, etc." The head server actually came over to see "who ordered that". If I remember right, the side dish was polenta which I had never eaten before. One of those things you see on Emeril and always wondered about.

Anyway, I really didn't care for it. When the server saw that I didn't eat much, he kept saying "I told you that you wouldn't like it. Can't I bring you something else? You should choose what I recommend." I kept saying "It's fine! I don't want anything else!".

By the end of the night, I didn't blame him for not liking the dinner, but I did blame him for not letting it go!!

It is not rude in any way to order what you want - regardless of who suggests what.

Rude or not, IMO, if I wanted what the sever is suggesting I would have ordered it in the first place.

LOL, no, WDWHound, I don't think he'd go for that! And honestly, his attitude is not really as weird as it sounds (FOR HIM) because he's the type who likes to try new things and loves all types of food as long as it is prepared well. When we go out, he'll often order one of the specials or ask for suggestions from the waiter because, according to DH, they waiters/waitresses who work there know what is good. He's rarely been disappointed when he takes their recommendations - so I guess it's mostly habit for him more than anything else, and he's just taken it a bit too far by thinking it is RUDE to do otherwise. Oh, and BTW, he wound up loving the salmon dish...he said it was excellent. I tasted it...it was ok but I was glad I stuck with my original choice!

Ha ha ha! Before I read Kim's response, I thought, "what a good practical joke to set up with the waiter for him!" That would be very funny!

I'm positive the waiter could care less what you order as long as he gets his tip. Is your DH this accommodating with everyone in real life? He must make a lot of concessions every day.

It's your food, order what you want.

You're paying for the meal, you should eat whatever you want!

Btw, as much as DH and I have gone out to dinner, I can't remember one time the server suggested anything unless I specifically asked him to.

I am currently a waitress and I certainly don't feel it's rude to go with your first order, rather than changing it to something your server recommends. Personally, I hate it when people ask me to recommend something. I don't KNOW that person, I don't KNOW what types of food they LIKE or DON'T like. That's why there are descriptions under the name of the items we serve, so the customer can read them and decide for themselves.

And when we cruise, I politely listen to the server's "recommendations" but he has no clue what I like or don't like, so I read the menu and order what I WANT. My DH doesn't like food with a lot of tomatoes/tomato sauce, etc. but the server on one cruise was constantly "pushing" those types of foods. I think they should just elaborate if asked a question, otherwise let people make their own choices.

I don't think it's rude at all. Like someone said, the waiter doesn't know you and doesn't know what kind of food you do and don't like, so how can he make a recommendation?

Sometimes when we've gone out to eat and I can't decide between two entrees, I'll ask the waiter if one is spicier than the other or which of the two he might order, but the final decision is still mine.
