Is this possible?

Next year we might have some extended family that goes. I would prefer to have my own ADR confirmation number so if they cancel it won't affect my ADRs. I was thinking I could make one reservation for the people in my party and then let them make a reservation for themselves trying for the same time and then just asked to be seated together. What do you think? Last year my parents were supposed to come with us so we made all our ADRs for 8 people. My mom had to have an double bypass surgery right before our vacation and my parents didn't go. I called back to reduce my reservation numbers from 8 to 6 and was given a hard time by several CM's who wanted to cancel my reservation all together since it would be at a bigger table and then said they had no availablility for our party size since it was so close. I demanded to talk to a manager and the one they were really pushy on was LTT they finally noted it on the reservation but left it at the original table.

I was just so upset that the CM wanted to cancel my ADRs that I had booked months ago and not be able to replace them, when in my opionion I was trying to do them a favor by letting them know that two people would not be able to join us so two other people might be able to get ADRs. I want to avoid this if possible next time.

Thanks for the help!!!

You can do that but it doesn't mean that the other family members will be able to get the same time slots or if you all do have the same time slots it doesn't mean that you will be seated together. I would think that if you all have the same ADR time that once you get to the restaurant you could certainly ask to be seated together. It might mean that you are waiting longer in order to have two (or more) tables cleared and prepared next to each other but it is probably doable.

Just as a point of clarification, when you book an ADR with Disney you are actually assigned a table for that location right then & there when you book as is everyone else who books for the same day you'll be dining. If you call close to your arrival date to reduce your party size the CM isn't trying to be mean there just really aren't any tables availale for your new party size. In your case all the tables for 6 were booked. She had you at a table for 8. It wasn't like you were freeing up a table for 2 by trying to reduce your party. Does this make sense? I fully understand the OP's dillema, just trying to shed some light on what happened when she tried to reduce.

What are the chances that they will cancel? I'm sorry about your mom's surgery but things like that don't happen every day. It sounds like you were burned once before but are you absolutely sure that these relatives could do it to you again?

It's kind of like my in-laws who were once in some nasty traffic along I95 (it was the holiday time so it was packed). Now they absolutely refuse to use I95 to go anywhere. Kind of hard to do that going from Maryland to Florida but they do it.
