sitting here thinking what can i do to keep the kids entertained on a cold miserable sunday. It occured to me that although we are a christian country although apperntly more people said they were in fact jedi's than christian in the last census. That having them this early in the year is a waste of valuable time off of work why cant we have them in june or july when the is at least a 20% chance of good weather. I like the vast majority of the great british public practice no religion at all, is it about time we arranged our bank holidays arround what is best for ourselves than a book that may or may not be true (no offence ment to anyone). After all as a nation this is would not be an unprecedented move as one king decided the country would leave the chatholic churh so he could get divorced and remarry. all i am trying to say is should the belief of a few determin the time off of all.

It seems that the belief of the few as you put it is giving you some time off work, if you want time off at a warmer time of year try annual leave. I am a Christian and have to work at Christmas and Easter due to working in a hospital, some people just don't know when they are well off.

I can see where you are coming from doverfox, but transferring the bank holidays to the summer months will certainly not guarantee decent weather - this is the UK we are talking about! We have also had some really nice easters - we have had BBQs and picnics at easter before now. I think it is a better idea to have easter in April rather than March though, as at least that gives us more hope of some spring like weather. You probably have just as much chance as getting nice weather in April as during the summer months.

I don't practice any religion but I don't see how moving the bank holidays to warmer months help. Unfortunately we cannot move Easter as this is base on the Full moon & had been the case for centuries. As mentioned before if you want time off when it is warmer use your annual leave:confused3 Not everyone gets time off work on Bank holidays, more & more people are having to work on these days now, so it won't make a difference where you move them too.

Just last year we had a warm Easter, its just this year the weather has been bad & it is bound to be the case again some other time.

So should we relocate Christmas/NY bank holidays as the weather's miserable then too? :confused3

At work we can move the bank holidays around if we really wish to, not sure how it works in practice but the offer is there! As for me am working over the whole weekend!

Just remeber this is the earliest Easter will be for quite a few years in 2011 it will be around April 24th!!

Claire ;)

Yes its been over 70 years since we had Easter this early
I'm another one working the bank holidays always do

Theres lots of things you can do on a wet day with the kids

What about us poor Irish we've had 2 holidays in one week:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
worked both

i did say 20% chance of good weather we have a long summer with no enforced breaks. i dont get annual leave but my staff (and i pay for it), dover becomes a ghost town on bank holidays so no piont opening my shop, the guys at work would rather they were when the weather was nicer.
does any one really believe that being told when to take a day off of work is better that deciding for ones self?

Well i work in a school so im always being told when my holidays are and that is just part of my job! Thing is say you have a family where most of the family have all the same holidays off their will always be some companies (such as big stores) who say people can't have those days off! Sometimes it is nice to have time off when everyone is together and companies cannot stop you. Some places say people can't have august and december off, what do people do then?

Absolutely! We had a holiday booked in January which we were forced to cancel as my DH's company had a crisis and he needed to stick around... He has enjoyed having the 4 day weekend to just relax with his family...

I just wish the schools hadn't changed from 2 weeks holidays in May/June to 2 weeks at Easter :confused3

They're all trying so hard to discourage parents taking children away in term time but it was much easier to find somewhere to go at Spring Bank when the weather's, hopefully, a little nicer :) (not talking cost here :goodvibes )

Yes!!:thumbsup2 Turkey on the beach :cloud9:
I can see your point doverfox. and its a very good one, the problem is with this country is that most of our laws etc were made many many moons ago and do need updating.
everytime we have a bank holiday it rains anyway regardless as when it is!!
:rotfl:
Easter is very early this year as well its mainly been around the middle of April.

Also as of next October it will be law that employers cannot take the bank holidays out of anyones annual leave entitlement if they do not work on them!

Claire ;)

eater is the only holidays that move around(due to the assension having to be on a full moon)so your more likely to get good weather.think it wont be this early for anouther 100 years
People dont realise what easter is for,not for having a good time but to reflect on what hapened 2008 years ago

A bit of a tangent here, but we were noting about the early easter this year, isn't it wierd that Christmas is a fixed date, but Easter moves around...

Does anyone know why that is... I know that all the christian holidays were originally pagan ones but wouldn't it be more logical if both were fixed dates as they are to do with the cruxifiction, which was on a certain day...

Easter is determined on the full moon. The day for Easter will fall on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal equinox.

Wow...you don't seriously believe that do you? You should go back and read your stats a bit more. Millions of people in this country are Christians, practising Christians like me. Easter is the most important date in the Christian calendar.

390127 people voted 'Jedi' as their religion in the 2001 Census which is their right of course but to compare those numbers to the numbers of Christians in this country which numbered 41,014,811 in the 2001 Census is a bit insulting really.
