Is Thanksgiving offensive?????

It just isn't a holiday in America if someone isn't whining, stomping their feet and screaming, holding a picket sign or trying to teach us why - even though we mean no harm - we are truly vile people for celebrating...and demanding that we cease any and all fun. Or at least tailor our fun to suit them.

Are you talking about in the home or out in the streets. ;)

They also protest Shamu??? What for? Is it a captivity thing, or a black & white whale thing?

Nah, they probably hate Christopher Columbus day alot more. I know I do, I just think its insulting. Columbus "Discovering" America. Hey Chris, native american here, living here for like a long long time....

I agree with you:guilty: Besides, everyone knows that the viking, Leif Erickson really discovered America:rotfl:

.......I think the way the Native Americans look at it is that they helped the Pilgrims. Their generosity helped the Pilgrims live. And in return the Pilgrims made it back home, brought over more people who ended up slaughtering their people. .....:sad2:

SOoooooo applying modern day thinking and logic that is embraced by many of the protesters of various holidays, What you are saying is that the native Americans committed sucide by helping the Pilgrims and allowed them to flourish and go back and get more people, who eventually destroyed the Native American's culture and population.

I KNEW IT, IT's their fault!!! :scared1: :stir: popcorn::

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday..the family and food of Christmas without the stress..That said, I understand why Native Americans don't celebrate it..Does anyone find it ironic how many seem to be offended by the thought that a small minority are offened by Thanksgiving? I mean really, who cares?
It's not like there are people out there protesting Thanksgiving

Well, I don't know about offensive, but my daughter gets sad thinking about all the turkeys that end up on the dinner tables. Whereas most of us see the cooked turkey as a delicious meal, she sees it as an animal with feelings that was once running around a barnyard enjoying life, or should have been anyway.:guilty:

I can see her side of it and admit that I have mixed feelings when I'm prepping the turkey and putting it in the oven.:guilty:

Now, I agree that I eat it and it is quite tasty, but still...oh, the conflicting emotions!:headache:

You got me. I pay very little attention to the protestors. But when we had a Sea World here in Cleveland, they were there every day with picket signs, walking in circles and shouting something once in a while. I taught my kids that those were "crazy people." Little 3 year old saying, "Dere's de cwazy peepa!" Yes, honey, those are the crazy people. We're going to feed the seals today!" And on we went. They grew up passing these folks several times a week and never once did we discuss it. :rotfl:

OT but this reminds me of a joke I heard yesterday at the movies.

If april showers bring may flowers then what do may flowers bring?

Answer: Pilgrims

They (Native Americans) do and have protested here in Plymouth. I just can't find the darn news articles right now. I think that there were arrests one year. They have buried Plymouth Rock in the past, and protest the Pilgrim's Progress March.

Who ever said it in a previous post hit the bullseye. Everything offends someone.

luvflorida - Talking about turkeys.......there are wild ones that are in our yard. They wander the neighborhoods between here and my sisters house, about 2 miles away. Last year they were in my yard on Thanksgiving. I was up at 7:00 AM prepping dinner and look outside and the darn things were wandering the yard, eating and scratching the lawn. I opened up the window and yelled out to them that they should probably hide. :lmao:

Was under the impression that he "discovered" the West Indies, and THOUGHT it was this land mass many of us are sitting on right now. Could be wrong. And he thought he was off to find something totally different...he really wasn't the best explorer, was he?

:upsidedow

Yep. Have fun with that. My mom had some problems with my going veggie in college, but a year or two later did so herself, and she was So Glad to give up the chore of preparing the "bird". She absolutely despised that job, even though they were quite good...for years while she was still omnivorous she ordered a kosher, hormone-free turkey from the health food store, and while those aren't huge, they were very very good. For any omnivores, I highly recommend going that route vs the Butterball thing.

I'm not *offended* by "Turkey Day", but other sure do seem to be offended (or at least defensive as though I'm saying it to "attack") when I call it Tofurky Day! :upsidedow

(then again, we don't eat Tofurky anymore either, as it's not all that good. We like having "leftovers", but with turkey substitutes...we make big sandwiches with nice white bread and lots of mayo with iceberg lettuce, with Yves "turkey"...this year I'm going to make dressing from scratch, now that it seems StoveTop doesn't make their long no-meat-involve dressing anymore...and mashed potatoes as well. Yum! leftovers were always my favorite anyway, growing up)

That is how my family and I view it. But learning more it does have dual meaning. We are working with our Girl Scouts to teach them a lot about Plymouth, both prior to the Pilgrims and after.

If you ever have the chance go to Plimoth Plantation and there is a Wampanoag Homesite. Plymouth residents are free to get in. DD went there two weeks ago on a field trip.

I know what you mean, everything turns politically correct and you feel like you have to look over your shoulder when you say something/anything.

I went there this summer! I found it very interesting! They have done a great job with their exhibits. I never knew Thanksgiving could be controversial in any way; it was very informative.

I liked that they did present the Native American point of view but did not condemn Thanksgiving as we know it in any way. They were very balanced.

Why does a pilgrims pants always fall down???

Because they wear the buckle on their hats.

That reminds me of the "Everybody Loves Raymond" show where they had the "tofu" substitute for Turkey!!:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :lmao: :lmao:
