I haven't heard any grumblings about this holiday yet...Is it politically correct?:confused3 No committees for the unethical mistreatment of turkeys or Pilgrams, corn abuse, mashed potates support groups, gravy substance abuse, pumpkin pie twelve step programs, over eaters annonymous???? Nothing? Is it possible?:rotfl:

trust me, somebody, somewhere (probably right here---you know they'll find this thread) is offended by "turkey day".

let's just wait until they show up....:surfweb:

I seriously can't think of anything that could be deemed offensive:confused3

eh, some Native American groups find it offensive.

Probably not, which is why, for the most part, in retail anyway, they slide right from Halloween to Christmas. Apparantly we have nothing to be thankful for in this country.

Plymouth, MA resident here. So I am going to chime in.

Yes it is offensive to the Native Americans. Thanksgiving is the National Day or Mourning. You can Google and read about it. For more information on the National Day of Mourning:

The Thanksgiving Parade is not held on the day, it is held the weekend prior.

I am providing information only, please do not flame me.

awwww, OK...I never looked at it that way. I viewed the first Thanksgiving as a camaraderie between the Pilgrams and the native Americans:confused3

That is how my family and I view it. But learning more it does have dual meaning. We are working with our Girl Scouts to teach them a lot about Plymouth, both prior to the Pilgrims and after.

If you ever have the chance go to Plimoth Plantation and there is a Wampanoag Homesite. Plymouth residents are free to get in. DD went there two weeks ago on a field trip.

I know what you mean, everything turns politically correct and you feel like you have to look over your shoulder when you say something/anything.

I am sure someone will think up something. My guess would be the term "thanks" in thanksgiving denotes a belief and prayer to god for thanks. I am waiting for someone to petition congress to take than name away, as it implies a state sponsored religion!:wizard:

Anda One anda Two.....

I think that Thanksgiving is just becoming a non-holiday. People are ignoring its existence, so no one bothers protesting. I went shopping the day after Halloween. Walmart was moving out the Halloween decorations and putting Christmas stuff in its place. In the mall, they're playing Christmas carols already. Christmas attire was for sale in the stores, next to the discount day-after-Halloween stuff. Sadly, it's like Thanksgiving doesn't exist anymore. We go straight from Halloween to Christmas.

I agree with you Simba's Mom. I was at Ann Taylor Loft and they had Christmas music playing.

I would love to celebrate Thanksgiving the same time they do in Canada. Makes more sense.

It must be offensive to someone in our school district. I was looking at the hot lunch menu for DS's school. On the day before their "fall break" (Thanksgiving) they are having a "Harvest Meal" (turkey, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie).

Well.. if I were a Native American, I'd view it as the coming of the Apocolypse. :)

Oh, yes. Thanksgiving is offensive. Slaughter of the indigenous people and all that.

It just isn't a holiday in America if someone isn't whining, stomping their feet and screaming, holding a picket sign or trying to teach us why - even though we mean no harm - we are truly vile people for celebrating...and demanding that we cease any and all fun. Or at least tailor our fun to suit them.

They also protest Shamu.

That pretty much sums it up in a nutshell..;)

I think the way the Native Americans look at it is that they helped the Pilgrims. Their generosity helped the Pilgrims live. And in return the Pilgrims made it back home, brought over more people who ended up slaughtering their people. If they hadn't helped them the Pilgrims would have never made it back... So it's a fateful day of mourning.

I think as families have become so fractured & scattered now, and the "Walton's Thanksgiving" is mostly a myth hiding so many dysfunctional families underneath all the phony smiles, our culture is breaking away from the obligation to spend time with "family" members no one really wants to see.

If you don't believe me, go back one year in the DIS archives & find many Thanksgiving threads of people complaining about various family members. :headache: Some holidays bring out the worst in some family members. :sad2:

Nah, they probably hate Christopher Columbus day alot more. I know I do, I just think its insulting. Columbus "Discovering" America. Hey Chris, native american here, living here for like a long long time....
