Is Thanksgiving offensive?????

luvflorida - Talking about turkeys.......there are wild ones that are in our yard. They wander the neighborhoods between here and my sisters house, about 2 miles away. Last year they were in my yard on Thanksgiving. I was up at 7:00 AM prepping dinner and look outside and the darn things were wandering the yard, eating and scratching the lawn. I opened up the window and yelled out to them that they should probably hide. :lmao:

Funny you should mention that! Last fall, as I sat Dissing on my computer, I saw something out of the corner of my eye moving around in the yard. I turned to look out the window and saw a whole parade of wild turkeys marching through the yard. They came out of the woods toward the bottom of the yard, marched along the edge of the woods, then walked back into the woods at the top of the yard.

Now, I have a thing about birds. They scare the heck out of me. At the time, I wasn't sure what kind of birds they were, so I grabbed my camera, snapped a few shots, and posted them on the Disboards.:rotfl: Some people couldn't understand what was so scary about a parade of wild turkeys, but to me, it was like my worst nightmare.:lmao:

What did the Pilgrim's wear to dinner??

A Har-Vest!!:woohoo: :woohoo:

my ancestors came over on the Mayflower and the Fortune and we have not had ant issue with it. But we have no Indians in our family either.

We celebrate a little different than some of our friends but the concept is the same. We give thanks , eat alot but also discuss the trip over from England. Pilgrams were not the nicest people and puritans well they go hand in hand.

But we love Thanksgiving and it is my oldest sons favorite Holiday...

Happy turkey day and glad something is not as of yet..politically INcorrect:thumbsup2

Thanksgiving is offensive to American Indians and turkeys. Look what has happened to both since the pilgrams were thrown out of their own country. I guess they were the very 1st Illegal Immigrants.;)

SOoooooo applying modern day thinking and logic that is embraced by many of the protesters of various holidays, What you are saying is that the native Americans committed sucide by helping the Pilgrims and allowed them to flourish and go back and get more people, who eventually destroyed the Native American's culture and population.

I KNEW IT, IT's their fault!!! :scared1: :stir: popcorn::

Ouch! :headache: Backing away out of that debate. :tiptoe: :ssst:

They were probably protesting until you threatened them. ;)

I think the way the Native Americans look at it is that they helped the Pilgrims. Their generosity helped the Pilgrims live. And in return the Pilgrims made it back home, brought over more people who ended up slaughtering their people. If they hadn't helped them the Pilgrims would have never made it back... So it's a fateful day of mourning.

It was not helping as a friendly "hey lets do something nice for these new people" as much as they were scared of them. They had heard of the death and diseases that befell other tribes and thought they might try to divert it.

So we are giving thanks that the Native Americans were trying to save their way of life... Yeah not sure that is offensive! LOL!

Well, I could understand Native Americans being a little bitter when they think of Thanksgiving. However, the idea of Thanksgiving has evolved into a time to get together with the one's you love and to reflect on what you have. So, pass the turkey. :)

One day,I got pics. Maybe in another 1,000 posts I will get the energy together to post them. Along with my mini turkey movie.

The darn things annoy the crap out of me when they are blocking my drive way or the road to get to work. I think about getting out of the car and chasing them. But not that brave yet.

Someone told me once that the turkeys live in trees. But I thought they couldn't fly (based on that WKRP in Cincinnati episode). Any one have any info on turkeys?

Got Disney - One of my friends in town is also one of the original families. She knows everyone and anyone in town.

They had already been wiped out... The pilgrims arrived to a pre made village with already tilled fields...90% of the Indians had already died and abandoned the village..The pilgrims simply took over the indians site, after they robbed their graves.

Why don't you build a pen, and heard them in, a little grain for food, come november, "fresh turkeys for sale!!!:yay:

Well, many were wiped out. However, it's pretty obvious some Indians showed up to help unless there were some ghost Indians I don't know about. :rotfl:

As usual, the truth about Thanksgiving is no where near what most people would choose to believe about it. It was not some big Kumbayah fest. ;)

I'm pretty sure the estimate is that there were around 35 left alive

Well, you could "accidentally" hit one with your car just before Thanksgiving. ;) Didn't we have a recent Road Kill thread here that was hilarious? Something about a woman hitting a bear & two men fighting over who gets to take it home? :scratchin

I don't think anyone was disagreeing with you. No one said a lot of Indians were still alive. My wife and I both studied the time period in grad school. :)

:sad2:

Actually some were killed but more of the Indians died due to disease that the Pilgrams brought over with them. The Pilgrams would have surely died without the help of the Indians showing them how to crop, harvest and stay warm.

Being from a family/Ancestors of Pilgrams as mentioned in previous post we as a family are grateful for what they did and thank them at every Thanksgiving. Our ancestors were what they were and at that time was the way it was and it was what it was....make sense...

anyway gotta feel sorry for the poor Turkeys.....so lets bow our heads for them and say....Ahhhh poor Turkeys we thanks you.:)

Well this is pretty offensive:rolleyes1
