Is Pandora similar to Harry Potter at Universal?

Well let me throw monkey wrench in things...

There are 2 rides in Florida I CAN NOT do even with my prescription motion sickness patch. Forbidden Journey...and Flight of Passage. Both of them will ruin me for the rest of the day. FoP is so bad even closing my eyes doesn't work...plus the smells make me want to vomit right there.

Yeah, I agree about the smells. They...aren't good.

Both rides are built around you looking at screens. There is more actual rider movement in Forbidden Journey. For some people, that may make the experience worse. For others, it may help I suppose.

I got sick on Harry Potter...I just don't do well with the simulator rides...is this ride similar as far as the motion sickness factor?

For me Flight is much worse than Forbidden. With Forbidden if I get the level of food in my belly and hydration right, I can handle it. Flight was like Soarin' on steroids and scared me badly. And the position you're in on the seat thing is not good for me. (and even on the DVC party night when I went on it, the line is just ugh. It's a line to get into a line to get into a line and another line. They call it the preshow, but it wasn't *interesting* preshow, or funny like Universal's Shrek used to be, or like the Minion ride's.

Forbidden Journey can make you sick because that robot arm literally lifts you up and tilts you almost all the way sideways and onto your back and stuff. That can mess with your inner ear equilibrium because the motion is actually kind of slow so it is enough to disrupt that internal mechanism. That combined with the screens can be hard for a lot of people.

Agreed.

I found that the picture at the Avatar ride was kind of out of focus and blurry at times and that's when I would start to feel sick/dizzy.

Agreed.

With Forbidden Journey, I just close my eyes for the screen parts (you don't really miss anything) and am perfectly fine. You can't close your eyes for the whole Flight of Passage screen parts or you will miss the entire ride. Star Tours is a major nausea machine for me. I'm sick within a couple of seconds.

I don't like Star Tours and I -hated- Mission Space Orange but I really liked FoP. I think it is more similar to Soarin' where you feel like you are gliding. It's not all jerky like some simulator rides.

Unless we cancel we will be going on a Universal and Disney trip in November. We are wondering if we should either wear the motion sickness patch behind the ear like you do on a cruise or take either an over the counter or prescription pill because we are not sure if we will have issues on Forbidden Journey and all of the motion sims at Universal or any of the new rides at Disney. We have never tried MS Orange but are fine on MS Green, Soarin’, Star Tours, and FOP. Have not been to GE yet to know about Millennium Falcon or Rise. My DH can’t do the teacups or anything where you really spin and we don’t go on anything with a drop. One cruise the rocking was so bad he almost got sick that was without taking anything so after that we always did the patch on cruises. Which should we go with?

The Pandora ride is the only ride I've ever been on that made me motion sick. I've literally ridden every ride at both WDW and Universal (except the newest coasters) and that stupid Avatar ride had me green. Same happened to my husband. I also didn't find it to even be good. I don't need to ride it again. On the other hand, Forbidden Journey is incredible and doesn't make me feel sick at all.

Where were you sitting? Do you think a middle seat would have been helpful?

How is the Harry Potter ride for large people. What type of restraints do they use?

I never thought I had issues with motion simulators (but don't even TRY to get me on the teacups!). I have ridden Pandora countless times and Star Tours never bothered me either.

But Forbidden journey messed with me a little....I mean, I rode it a 2nd time for my kids sake but would not do it otherwise. I am not sure what it was....but that and the Simpsons (I won't even do THAT one again for the kids!) definitely gave me issues.

It's small and constricting. Although they have added larger seats on the end of the ride. Google it for photos because it's hard to explain. There are test seats outside the attraction so you can try it out beforehand.

I’m also concerned. I can do Soarin’ and Star Tours, but I’m scared to try anything else. I’ve avoided screens for years because of a terrible experience and reaction to Back to the Future ride.

I don’t want to risk it and even thought about skipping simulator rides for the trip (which significantly cuts down on what I can do).

Perhaps ride at the end of the day?

I'll nudge that the top and bottom rows can have a little bit of the out-of-focus effect, too, since they're not directly center of the screen. It's not as bad as seat 1 or 16 on the middle rows, though. (Seat 1 or 16 on the top or bottom row is not a great experience.) Unfortunately, you can't control which row you're in - you just kinda have keep your fingers crossed.

For anyone debating riding FOP - one of the shortest lines of the day is at closing, so it couldn't hurt to eat something and hop in line as the last thing of the day. But it's honestly my favorite ride at any park right now.

I get what I refer to as 'virtual vertigo'.

I seemingly get this when riding simulated rides more than actual roller coasters.

The Simpsons & The Mummy were the worst for me at Universal; Harry Potter, not so much.

At Disney, I can no longer ride Star Tours, and found being the pilot on Smugglers Run was also a bit much much.

However, Flights of Passage is my favorite attraction at Disney and does not cause me to feel 'vertigo' while/after riding.
