Is Mission Space too "barfy"?

I've never been on Mission:Space and don't plan to, but I have a suggestion for nausea. Ginger root extract works wonders for preventing motion sickness and nausea. Also, if you are already feeling barfy, papaya root extract is great for calming your stomach.

So would you compare Mission Space to Star Wars and Body (in Epcot)? I didn't necessarily like them, but made it through okay. What I've read about Mission Space makes me think I don't want to ride it. Plus, I am more worried about my 9year old son riding it. I know I will recover (even though it might take time), but he could be down for the whole day!

I personally think that Mission Space has more "barf" potential than Star Tours or Body Wars, but as you can tell from reading the experiences thus far, everyone is different. For myself, I can be moderately prone to motion sickness, although Star Tours and Body Wars never bothered me. I approached Mission Space with some trepidation, but I was very careful to do exactly as the instructions said - keep your head back, always look straight ahead and never off to the side, and don't ever close your eyes. There is cool air blowing gently on your face the whole time, which helps, and I made an effort to breathe regularly and stay relaxed. You're asked to push a button on your control panel at some point in the landing process, and the button you're supposed to push flashes at the appropriate time. To avoid taking my eyes off the screen, I mentally located which button was going to be mine - it depends on which seat you're in - and when the time came, I noted the flashing in my peripheral vision and pushed the button without having to look at it. Of course, nothing happens if you don't actually push the button - it's just to make you feel like you're more a part of the experience. But if you're not prepared, you could be tempted to look away from the screen to find the button, and that may not be good. The most intense sensation for me was the abrupt feeling of "weightlessness" after the liftoff. It wasn't nauseating for me, just very weird, and it helps to be prepared for it. Overall, I felt fine after the ride - just a tiny bit lightheaded. It was an amazing experience, and I was glad I did it. I hope you take the chance on it.

I don't want the Dramamine (sp?) to make my son sleepy - does the lower drowsiness one still make you sleepy?
I never get sick on rides, but I felt nauseous after Mission Space. I didn't lose it, but I had to sit down for a while and I had a slight headache for the rest of the day.

Ride it at the end of the day in case someone does get sick so it doesn't ruin the whole day.

A few weeks ago, on MythBusters on Discovery Channel, and for what it's worth they did some experiments with the various motion sickness remedies and they found that ginger was very effective.

I've ridden MS about 5 times now. I only had troubles the first time. That time was bad enough that I almost decided to never ride it again. I found out my biggest problem was that I worried so much I made myself sick. Now I didn't barf but like others have said I felt a little off for hours afterward. The second time I rode it I waited until about an hour before Illuminations figuring if I had trouble I could sit down watch Illumination and then go home. I was fine. It's not my favorite ride but I will ride it once when I get the chance. I've started taking Dramamine for when I go to Universal (I love big coasters but sometimes they don't love me anymore). So now I just start taking them the day I go to EPCOT for MS as well. My recommendation would be to wait until the end of the day to ride. That way if you do have problems, it doesn't ruin your day. Secondly, relax and don't worry about it.

suck on hard candy while riding??

I cant imagine that being a good idea. Pulling G's and moving on a fast ride with hard candy in your mouth?

This was recommended in the Unofficial Guide to Disney - supposedly an old astronaut trick. Something do do w/ keeping your blood sugar up or level.

I dont know if they "toned it down" after that, but I am not trying it again.
I'm so glad so many people are to wimpy to ride it. :teeth:
Never a line for us strong people :thumbsup2

It's like everyone said. It's different for each person. I didn't feel sick to my stomach, just very yucky. But I also felt like I needed a nap so I went right to the American Pavilion and sat in the back row and slept through the show. Then I felt fine. And I wasn't the only person catching a nap. Just before the lights went down I looked around and there were a few other people who had slumped way down in their seats and had their eyes shut. The show is just long enough for a good nap. Try it, you might like it.

My DH rode Mission last November with my twin daughters. They were 7 at the time. My daughters loved the ride and wanted to ride it again, but DH felt a little sick after the ride. He went to the Coca Cola tent and got a Ginger Ale afterwards and felt much better.

I decided not to ride Mission Space after I found out that for whole duration of the ride, you are constanly spinning.

HI . My DS and I rode last JUNE ,

The best I CAN TELL YOU IS , DO NOT DO NOT eat before the ride and don't close your eyes,

My DS was only seven then he loved it, One time was fine for me :crazy2:

Take care and have a GREAT TRIP :thumbsup2

GOD BLESS

I never get sick after any ride, and after this one I felt dizzy and sick to my stomache. There were five of us that went on my dd (8) did not like it she cried and felt a little sick after. We sat around in the room after the ride for about and hour until I felt better. But everyone is different, something to try and decide if you will every go back on..not me though once was enough.

I didn't like MS at all. I didn't get nauseated, but hated the sensation of the g-forces pressing you down (it doesn't help that the "control panel" is so close to you -- it's claustrophobia-producing!). I had read so many warnings like "keep looking straight ahead" that I think I freaked myself out. I'm proud of myself for doing it (I almost used the "chicken exit") but would never go again.

For a frame of reference, I love thrill rides like coasters (R&R is one of my favorites) and ToT, but hated Mission Space. Not my cup of tea.

This is a really strange ride in terms of the reaction it causes in people. My bf and I have no problem whatsoever on MS. We went on it a couple of times in a row with not even a headache even though we looked around and basically did everything you are not supposed to do. I did not take my sister on it though as she has a sensitive stomach and I thought it might make her ill. My advice is don't worry about it unless you know you usually suffer from motion sickness. I think all the warnings, although necessary from a health and legal standpoint, make people so nervous about riding MS that they end up feeling barfy before they even step on the ride! :scared: :crazy2: If you do end up feeling ill, peppermint is great for nausea. Try to find a peppermint tea or even a hard candy.

I generally don't get sick on rides. The ONLY ride that bothered me EVER (in any amusement park) is Body Wars (Not Star Tours, just Body wars). That being said, I loved Mission: Space. My SIL (who works at RFC in DD) went on with us, and told us before we rode that if you just keep looking forward and don't close your eyes, you will be fine (ie. don't look at the people you are with). I felt fine - lots of G's, that's for sure. It was just DH, SIL & I, and we acted like freaks.....pulling all the controls, etc. and yelling back in forth at each other "Roger, Roger (Airplane)". We amused ourselves anyway! :rotfl2:

Can't wait to ride again! :hyper:

I rode back in June of 2003 during testing and for the first time discovered that I was closterphobic. The thing that helped was when the screens cut on and I got the sense of depth. I ended up with a mild headache for about two hours afterward and don't think I will ride this again.

I'll probably ride it at least once every trip, it is an amazing attraction. That said, it does make me feel a little barfy. I always think I'll be okay and then right near the end it gets to me and I start thinking, LET IT END, LET IT END! It ends at just the right time. We went right before lunch last time and I think my stomach was too empty. I think the trick is don't be too full or too hungry. The banana tip is probably a good one.

I don't like to admit it, but as I get older rides like this get to me more than they used to (I'm 35.)
