Is it wrong to "out" the trolls?

In light of a few "questionable" posts lately, do you think it is wrong to out them?
Is it wrong to google their screen name in order to out them or is that crossing the proverbial line?
Do you think exposing them does any good?

It really doesn't bother me. I would much rather have some bickering over exposing them then dealing with the choas they cause among posters.

I think it is fine to out a troll, just keep in mind they want attention and *******. So out them and then remind everyone to not post anymore to the thread. If you ignor them they go away.

Obviously, I see no problem with outing trolls. Anyone interested in a new Internet start-up company: Troll Busters. :teeth:

I don't see a problem with it. If something doesn't seem right, odds are that it isn't right. Some of us are more google savvy than others, and I'm happy to see the wrong doers called on it.

Nope nothing wrong with it, if you have the time. It seems to be a never ending battle though. ;)

I think that is the important point with trolls - people need to not feed their need to cause trouble by continuing to post to them! The worst thing for a troll to see is that no one is responding to them!

Troll Busters... I love it!

LOL TM...no, I don't think it is wrong to out the trolls. The only thing you have on the net is your integrity and the respect you earn by being consistent. If you cannot have the decency to be upfront with what you say, why should you be treated with respect? Btw, no one is forced to say anything, so there is no excuse for making up completely bogus personas or stories.

I think it is strange that some people have more of a problem with people outing a troll/liar than the actual person who is lying/trolling.

As always, JMO

How do you out a troll?

I just put my screen name into my search engine, and another screen name of another member...nothing doing.

I don't want to "out" any trolls, because they really don't bug me (I just don't care about trolls!), but now that you bring it up, I'm curious about how it could be done.
:confused3

One other thing though, not everyone who appears troll-like is really a troll.

I'm going to assume you haven't been on the CB board in the last couple of days?

Outing them just means identifying that they are a troll (based on their posts) and then calling their bluff.

Would that be a fair assesment guys?

I came up with quite a bit more when I googled my own, but that's because my screen name is used for EVERYTHING I do on the net.

This is true, but if you start asking pointed questions or casting some suspicion, you can pretty much tell which is a troll and which is not.

Could not agree more.

I just googled my name and there were 4 pages of stuff.

I need to get a life! LOL

If the person is really a troll, then I think other posters have a right to know. IMO, the thread that vanished should have stayed available just so everyone could see they were being scammed.

Working to out a troll seems like a lot of work, IMO, if to out the troll takes 'investigative' work and time. I guess if I had time to burn, might be something to pass the time. :confused3 If it is just a 'passing in the night' type troll, usually as obvious as the night is dark, selling a pyramid scam or the like, I might post a reply of 'bye-bye' a  and report to the 'team' here. They are usually gone in fairly sort order. If is is a disruptive troll, same thing, report it to the 'team' here, it takes pretty good care of getting rid of them in short order.

If I happen to see a 'returnee' who has been repeatedly banned in the past for busting the guidelines here, I might 'out' the person by saying hello or similar, if that is really 'outing' the poster. :confused3 I do wish they would still use the 3 strikes your out concept they use to use years back here.....warn you 3 times, you get the boot, let you return 3 times, and if continual boots, ban the IP. I have seen folks booted without warning, I have seen booted posters return 20 times. Who knows? :confused3

As for Net trolls, I still think this oft posted description and advice still rings so very true........

I agree with this statement.

It's possible too, I think, that one person's definition of a troll may not be the same as everyone else's. I believe that the classic definition of a troll is a username invented solely to "stir the pot" or otherwise annoy people.

With that in mind, does it make somebody with an "odd" sense of humor a troll? I mean, if they were posting weird, but basically harmless stuff, are they truly a troll?

And yes, it can cross a line IMO to search for a whacky sounding poster all the free internet. For one thing, unless you're a board administrator and have access to posters' IP addresses, you have no way of knowing whether the posters you find in such a search are the same persons you think are trolls. For another, you have no clue why they post what they do. I don't think it's wise to poke at strangers with sticks.

I don't see why it's such a big deal most of the time to find who is lying or trolling. It's the internet; people lie on it all the time.

I guess if you were looking to become involved with somebody off-line, it would matter whether they were the real deal or not. But just to say "Ah ha! I knew that person wasn't for real!" doesn't justify trailing them around the 'net IMO.
