or do you agree that the best designed pins seem to come from DL? I like the artwork better, and they seem to create a lot with characters besides the fab you-know-who.

I also seem to be drawn to the pins from Tokyo.

Does each park have their own design team? That doesn't seem like the way Disney does things!

How do they decide which pin goes where?

Do any of you know anything about this?

It seems the majority of pins coming from WDW are the 4 and Pooh and Friends.

Hopefully, Nat (NHMickey) will add a reply here and give you the full story. From what I remember Nat mentioning . . .

Each park has its own design team, that includes the individual parks at WDW. I believe he said virtually no coordination among any of the teams.

I have to agree I think the DL pins a re much more colorful and also usually much LARGER PINS.

Some of my favorite pin are rack pins from DL.

I believe pins are designed by both individuals and teams. How they decide what makes it to fruition is a mystery. Other wise how do describe a great pin like Mickey Golfing from one event and then poor ole' Dino Gertie from another.

I agree also! I just mentioned this to a friend the other day. I love the new DL pins coming out!!!

Count me in! My collection holds a LOT of DL pins.
I just feel like you're getting so much more pin for your money!
The only pin I was a little disappointed with was the October Artist Choice.
I expected it it to be more colorful and larger than it actually was.

As for Tokyo, at first they were ok. But the Japan Disney store pins
100 years, are awesome. Especially the Classics . Compare those to
our Disney Store Poster pins... stark differences.

I'm finding that more and more of my pins are becoming "Keepers".
Thanks for great topic!

Kathy

I agree and I do not think it is a matter of the grass being greener on the other side...

I wish some of the designs for WDW were a little better. I also believe that DLR pins utilize the Fab 5 more often than WDW pins. I only collect Minnie pins, and I have more DL pins than WDW because of that. It seems like DLR is coming out with cool pins every other week and I have to wait like a month or two for a good Minnie pin.

What does the pin designing team got against Minnie Mouse? Looks like its off to Guest Relations for me!

Lisa,

Do you remember the SS Daisy pin we traded? I think I had to ship that air freight! It must be about 4 inches square and weigh a couple of pounds.

This past July, I had a long conversation with a good friend of mine while leisurely enjoying the atmosphere of DCA, and a few brews. He told me that all merchandising was coming out of Florida, and that sometimes, Florida was not aware of what would sell in Disneyland. Even though our conversation was not "pin specific", I would guess from our conversation that the DL pin ideas do in fact come out of Florida. I have no idea whether there is a different "team" for Disneyland pins, or the same team for all.

I do know Tokyo is a totally independent merchandising entity, as I suspect is Paris.

hope this helps...

Pins are different than other merchandise. At an NFFC Pin Seminar we were told by the DL Pin Team that each venue has it's own design teams. They may however have Artists in common for the Artists pins. The Walt Disney Design Group encompasses both parks. When asked if say WDW and DL "communicate" to each other about pins, events, methods of distribution etc. The answer was a definite "sometimes".
