Is it just me or is " my strange addiction " just keep getting stranger.

oh my, I don't watch but the descriptions strike me as old fashioned freak shows. Sort of out of step with today's touchy feely ideas

are they funny, unintentionally funny or supportive?

Sometimes they're really upsetting, like Hoarders. There was one with this lady who eats fabric softener dryer sheets. She eats 8-10 a day. The show took her to a doctor who told her the risks of eating all these chemicals and it was really like the woman had never thought about the chemicals in the dryer sheets. She was stunned to think that they were dangerous. She was at risk of major cancers and loss of function in her central nervous system and very early death.

She started talking about her children and sat and bawled in the doctors office. It was a "major breakthrough" moment. I couldn't believe that she'd never once in the years she'd been eating those nasty things ever thought about the chemicals in them.

Another episode was a woman who sniffs gasoline every ten minutes or so. She spent over 500 dollars a month of her boyfriend's pay (she doesn't work) on buying gasoline to put into water bottles and sniff. She had extreme memory loss and would randomly during filming not be able to continue her sentences. She was also in denial of this being an issue at all. Her adult daughter sat and cried on camera thinking about how one day very soon her mother is going to die because of this weird addiction. It was very very sad.

The one other people are talking about with the woman who acts like a baby was sad to me too. She seemed so incapable of handling her day to day life. She was very passive in everything she did. I mean of course she was, how much more passive could you be when you're a 20 something year old woman with her whole life ahead of her and all you want to do is lay in a crib and regress back to when you didn't even have to use a toilet, because someone would change your diapers (which she wore) and feed you? She seemed so unhappy and also talked about not having a lot of friends, and the friends that she did have that did know about her habits were very clearly freaked out and frustrated. It seemed so sad to me that she didn't enjoy living her life at all.

After I saw the woman eating her sofa, I turned the show off and have not tuned in since. It's just too bizarre.

Pica is really strange. I watch 1000 Ways to Die sometimes while clipping coupons (it's like a train wreck!) and they covered this poor man who ate metal objects, but especially coins. His brother tried to keep things away from him but I guess he was pretty sneaky about getting his fix. Apparently once pica manifests, it is usually there to stay.

I've never watched "Strange Addiction." I'll have to see if it's available on Netflix yet.

This show and Hoarders really bother me, because they are making entertainment out of someone's mental illness. It just doesn't seem right to me.

But these are grown adults -- they signed up to be on the show, no one follows them around to secretly film them.

The adult-living-as-a-baby one was SO bizarre... that poor soul has so many issues, I think it would take a lifetime of therapy to sort them all out. I mean, "she" is a he, just living as a "she" (big deal, I can wear a pope hat and call myself the Pope -- doesn't actually make me the Pope), he enjoys the feeling of "a warm, wet diaper" 24 hours a day, and spends most of his waking home life just lying there in his home-made crib.

And the other one -- how does someone get addicted to sniffing gasoline?? I mean physically addicted, unable to stop. I just don't get that at ALL. :confused3

There are many addictions in this world, some are strange, some are funny and some are a bit disturbing. One addiction that is really strange that has been featured in "My Strange Addiction" show is the eating of dead husband's ashes. A Tennessee woman has found a bizarre way to grieve for the death of her spouse. Some have found it unsettling. She has become passionate about consuming his ashes. Resource for this article: Woman eats her ashes of her dead husband.

I can't watch that show. It's too disturbing.

I've never seen the show. That kind of stuff would be too upsetting to watch. It sounds like OCD compulsions rather than addictions. Call it what it is!

Pica can also because by anemia. Pica is the need to chew on non-nutritive items like ice, chalk, toothpaste, etc.

I got addicted to chewing Altoid mints for a while. Who CHEWS Altoids? They are so strong. But, I was chewing 3 at once & going through a whole tin container every 2 days. I've read some people go through 3 tins in ONE day.

I was so low on iron from anemia that my body was trying to suck the iron out of what it thought would provide it. Within a day & a half of getting the right amount of iron supplements, the craving for Altoids was totally gone. Now I still have few extra tins of Altoids around. :lmao:

I didn't see it but a friend was talking about it...and being it was late and we were on a silly kick...we started calling her the fun dipper....really unsensitive, but it was one of those times when we thought everythign was hysterical.

What will she do when she runs out of his ashes? I'm not askign that to be insenstive but really, what will she do?

I saw the one with the transgender person wearing diapers and being a "baby" when at home and the woman who was eating 8 dryer sheets a day. This is beyond wack. I missed the rock eater.

I won't even watch anymore, it reminds me of the Anna Nicole Smith show, it made me feel like I was a part of something that was taking advantage of someone who wasn't able to truly defend themselves.

This show is disturbing and the people need some serious help. I agree with the PP...it is like taking advantage of watching other people’s struggles. The woman who ate the cushions on her couch and the one that ate Clorox bleach really made me cringe. :scared1:
