Is DVC for Me? Diagnostic Questionnaire

Since people keep asking... I am going to try to refine this so it will share your results without me having to copy/paste...

... but in the meantime here is a diagnostic that will allow you to discern your understanding of DVC, where your pitfalls may be found, whether you would use it enough to justify it, where you should buy...

It's not designed to give you an answer, just to get all the relevant thoughts in one place. Sometimes just answering the questions and looking at your answers will be enlightening. When my husband completed this, it made it clear what his priorities would be--for example, I was thinking we could stay in studios and really get a lot of mileage... the most appealing thing for him is that the accomodations will be 1 Brs or larger as our family grows. I had to take that into account when deciding on our point load, which changes our initial investment and maintenance fees and therefore we had to look at it as a much bigger investment than I had been planning initially.

Your survey assumes "vacation" in several locations. FWIW, some folks use DVC for non-vacation travel (conferences held at WDW, etc).

Question: "Why would you join"

I think the option, "I want bigger, vacation home style rooms for a growing family" could be stated w/out needing to tell you "why." For me, I simply want the bigger, vacation home style -- for just two of us. You could drop the "growing family" component -- it isn't relevant.

In the following question, are you assuming that the participant intends to use DVC points when they book these options? Does the survey leave room for booking outside DVC?

These three questions (with their list of possible responses) strike me as being very similar. What differences are you hoping to read from answers to:

And ... how will you use responses to the question, "Which words describe your ideal vacation?" If I choose words: adventurous, escape, homey and educational - will you steer me off of DVC? To me, DVC is a tool to meet a specific purpose -- but hardly an "ideal vacation."

I will not try to steer anything---this just compiles your answers. When you look them over, compare them to the costs/benefits of DVC as you understand them and see if they fit.

On this question: Which of the following statements describes your vacation scheduling (check all that apply)?
You might want to include, "having a washer and dryer at my beck and call makes me happy". (or "My family is messy and I would like to be able to do laundry any time I please")

Or "having a free washer and dryer to use makes me happy".

Also, "I need clean sheets and clean towels every day".

And, "I always take hotel shampoo and other items home with me to remind me of my vacation or to donate to charities" (because you are going to get limited supplies of these with DVC).

Maybe even, "I sleep in the room and that is all. I don't need extra space or luxury."

Never understood people who WANTED to run a washer on vacation but then I was raised in a family of seven with one bathroom (hand-washing people - anyone remember that?), one washer and no dryer so if you washed something then see ya tomorrow and by then I always found a new fav item to wear.

Hated washing - it's became one of those 'button' items/patience issue - patience is also a non-preference (don't tell my adult kids I said that!).

First you'd wash it - and you better learn how to re-use the rinse water which means you first load better not contain a dark colored item. Unless there was a high wind blowing then your clothes where 'hard' and folding was a major accomplishment because back then the wrinkled look wasn't a fashion statement. And if we talking wool you better not sweat or be sloppy because dry cleaning was for 'rich' people.

If I wash on a vacation then I'd better be gone longer that 8 days.

LOL. Washing seems to be your "issues place." I have no such traumatic childhood memories associated with washing my clothes, and I prefer to take back a suitcase of clean clothes rather than have Mount Laundry waiting for me when I return from vacation. I also tend to have the house cleaned while we're gone and have a grocery delivery waiting on our front steps, so we don't have a bunch of mundane stuff to do as we settle back into real life. To-may-to, to-maa-to.

I find laundry on holiday so easy to do. I actually stored the colored laundry in the machine until I have enough to out it on. I put it on one morning before we go to the parks and throw it in the dryer when we get back. Minimum of fuss and no dirty clothes lying about. If you had teenage boys you'd know what I talking about

Just want to clarify--this tool just gives you questions and compiles your answers for your review. It does NOT make a recommendation. The idea is that with your own answers compiled in one placed, you may be able to determine whether, based on your understanding of DVC, it is a fit for you. It operates on a similar level as a psychologist asking you "and how does that make you feel?", and may raise issues you hadn't considers
