Is Chicken Pox Contagious (after outbreak)?

There's a rash of Chicken Pox going around Trumbull, CT elementary school. However, most of these kids should have been vacinated?

Do you know when the vacination started in US? Does other countries vacinate for CP? Is CP contagious after the break out period?

None of my kids were vaccinated for Chicken Pox, it came out after they all had chicken pox. The contagious period extends from a couple of days prior to the break out when the symptoms appear to be the beginning of a cold and extend through the time when all of the scabs are totally dried.

A guy at work wants to bring in his kids because the school told him that they are not allowed for one week.

I don't want them here! Even though I had chicken pox, what about others who didn't? Do foreign countries vacinate for CP?

What about shingles? (A string of CP!).

He needs to leave his kids home or take FML to take care of them. Chicken pox in someone with a compromised immunity can cause some serious problems.

i know the vacine had just come out prior to when dd was born (1994) because as soon as it was available her pediatrician began advising parents to use it (before some schools mandated)-she got hers when she was around a year old.

no one should be exposed to a child with chicken pox-esp. if they have a compromised immune system, even if they've had chicken pox they could get shingles (same virus-our mom's md would'nt let her near our kids when they were broken out).
if someone i worked with had spoken of their intent to do so i would have immediatly gone to my supervisor, and if they did not prevent the person from bringing the child i would have called OSHA (occupational safety and hazard) as well as the Public Health Department (i can't imagine an employer allowing it-anyone who caught it on the work site would be eligible to workman's comp benefits). when i worked for health and social services in the day that paper medicaid cards were issued we would'nt allow clients with kids w/pox in the office-we brought the cards out and handed them through the car window.

I may be wrong, but I don't think the vaccination is 100%. I think you can still get chicken pox, it just cuts down the severity of it. Also, as someone else said, you can still get shingles from it. Tell him he needs to keep his kids home

I know lots of kids who've had the vaccine but come down with the disease. It's definitely contagious until the rashes entirely scab over.

Lots of CP threads today!

The CDC has a pretty good info page. http://www.cdc.gov/nip/diseases/varicella/default.htm

I do know Japan begin using the vaccine at least 10 years before we did.

Barkley, maybe I read your post wrong, but I think you have it backwards (or I am tired and can't think! ). You can't get Shingles from another person. It is from the dormant virus you carry after having CP.
Yes, people with shingles are contagious to persons who have not had chickenpox. Therefore, people who have not had chickenpox can catch chickenpox if they have close contact with a person who has shingles. However, you can not catch shingles itself from someone else. Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus which has been dormant (staying quiet) in your body ever since you had chickenpox. So, you get shingles from your own chickenpox virus, not from someone else.
