Is "Bella" a name? * UPDATE POST 56*

At Preschool we have a little girl named Bella and I'm pretty sure it is not a nickname. We have another girl named Isabella and they call her Bella also.

Isabella was actually like 6th last year in popular names. It was 7th or 8th when I named our Bella "Isabella" in 2003. I wanted "Piper" and got shot down by just about everybody.

There's also another girl in her class who goes by "Isabella" and my Bella says "I want to be called 'Isabella.' It's a Be-U-tiful name, Mommy!"

DD15 went to Kindergarten with a little girl named Sabella. I don't care much for the name Isabella, but I love the name Sabella!

I would just use Bella if that is what you like.

Our 3rd child is Katie. That is her given name. It is not short for Katherine since I personally don't like it (my cousin in law is Catherine & I find her annoying & I'd hate her to think that my child has the same name as her).

Anyways, I liked Katie & I knew that she'd be called Katie even if people told me "no you have to name her Katherine". But no one did. She can shorten it to Kate if she wants to when she gets older but for now she is my Katie Couric.

I like Isabella and Bella but hate the name "Izzy" so I'd call her Bella.

I like Bella, but have only heard of it as a nickname for Isabella. Go for it! :)

MY DD is named Bella.

Her formal name is Isabella Noelle.

No WAY! My good friend's daughter's name is exactly that too. Isabella Noelle! Was your DD born in december? That's why my friend gave her Noelle as a middle name.

I like the name Bella. I was shocked to see it was the #4 baby name for a girl in 2006. I didn't realize it was so popular.

And Bella is fine for a first name. My mom named me just Cynde, not Cynthia.

Cynde

I like Bella, better then Izzabella. It is a real name. I would of named my 2nd it, but DH wasn't on board. We named her Lillian, and only call her Lily. I wish we would of just called her Lily. My advice is name them what you plan to call them. I really wish we had.

My oldest DD (Anna Rose) calls her bitty baby twin doll Bella. She loves the name. :thumbsup2

DH and I have our boy's name picked out (Joseph) and had a girl's name (Gianna) but the girl's name we choose was for the daughter we will be adopting. Since that is temporarily on hold, I haven't decided yet if we will use that name or save that... I really need to think about it. The other name we like but that has become way too popular is Isabella, although we would call her Bella, which got me to thinking. We LOVE Bella even more but haven't heard it as a formal name. Do you think we could pull it off?

ETA: Bella actually flows better with our last name.

Let us know know what name you finally decide on.....but I do love the name Bella or Isabella.

There are about 16 Ella/Bellas in our Gymboree class but I think they're all nicknames from Isabella.

Nope. July. We have a funky last name and it just fit. :3dglasses

If we have another little girl, I like Lucy. Not Lucille. Lucy.

Funny you mention it, as I've always thought Bella would be a nice name for a little girl. Good choice!

** UPDATE **

Thanks everyone. I was truly expecting a lot of negative comments :duck: .

It's a go!!!! If it's a girl, her name will be Bella Christina (after my sister). My husband is 100% Italian and I'm 1/2 Italian so we know the meaning well. Our last name is very Italian so we definitely need something a bit "ethnic" to flow well. Bella and Gianna both go well but Gianna holds a special place in my heart for when we adopt. I would not feel right using it now because it is meant for her... if that makes sense.

Makes perfect sense to me! We have two names reserved for children who may be born biologically to us. Our daughter in China has a name that means something to us and the name belongs to no one else. I completely understand what you are saying...

My sister and her DH were trying to come up with a name for their daughter when she was pregnant. They both liked Isabella, but he has a cousin (I think that's how they are related) Isabelle. After thinking about it, they realized that they really only liked the Ella part of Isabella...so she became Ella Simone! :)

I love the name Bella! I'm happy that you have chosen it should you have a daughter!
