Is Alfredo's really that bad??

We ate there at lunch in August as part of the "Free Dining" promotion (now over). I had heard such bad things about it, but we really wanted to try it and since lunch was free we had nothing to lose. I had the Fritto Misto con Calamari to start and the Le Originali Fettuccine all'Alfredo for lunch. The calmari was just so-so, but the fettuccine was very good, although a bit heavy due to all the cream and cheese. My husband had the Mozzarella alla Caprese followed by the Piccatina di Vitello. Both were excellent. The kids had regular spaghetti with tomato sauce and they both liked it.

Given our experiences, we will probably return :).

We were not nuts about Alfredos. We are from Boston and there is nothing like the food from the North End. We won't be going there anytime soon.

This is our 1st trip and we've read some very bad (as well as some good) reviews about Alfredo's. We're going as part of the Candlelight Processional package (we have the dining plan) and I am starting to wonder if we should just cancel the whole thing and take the evening off so that we don't exhaust the kids and have a lousy meal on top of it. The concert sounds nice but I don't know if it is worth the effort. The whole family is really into gourmet Italian food and I'm afraid that to us, Alfredo's will be just plain bad. What do you think? Anything in particular we should avoid/get? We're going for an early dinner before the 6:45 show. Thanks for your advice!

We just had dinner there on Sunday, Nov.20th and it was a good experiance. We had had dinner at Alfredo's three times this calendar year and each experiance as been good.

alfredos is great for food, we love the homemade fetticine alfredo. the only problem there is the service & crowds at dinner. we still go back every trip though.

We ate here last week. I copied my review from my overall review post in case you did not see it there:

We decided to go to Alfredos for pasta. Carb loading is good! I was a little concerned about this decision because I had not eaten here since the late eighties and had not read much positive feedback on it. DH had the fettucine alfredo and I had the pasta sampler, which contained penne with tomato sauce, lasagna Bolognese, and ricotta-truffle filled pasta pillows in a cream sauce. DH really liked the alfredo, but I could not eat it at all. It was way too rich for me (and I love rich foods!) I think there was an entire stick of butter in there. The pasta sampler was OK—the penne was cooked correctly but the sauce was too sweet. The pasta pillows had a nice cream sauce but the filling was nothing special (I certainly could not taste the truffles). I did not try the lasagna, but DH did. He said that the pasta was very nice but again the sauce was too sweet.

We shared a tiramisu for dessert, which was fine though I missed the flavor of the marsala the ladyfingers are usually soaked in—in this case it was all espresso. We also had espressos here which were fine.

Would I go here again? Probably not. I will say that our waiter was very sweet and helpful and the room is a nice space. Kids might like the sweet tomato sauce, but it is not our style.

We ate there Tuesday November 22 for lunch. The service was great and we always like the food. We had the Mozarella Caprese and my wife and I had Fettucine and my daughter had spaghetti. We had a half carafe of the house Chianti and my wife had the flan with Grand Marnier sauce, my daughter had Tira Maisu and I had the desert sampler. We have always enjoyed eating there. I don't know if it makes a difference but as we were ordering the waitress asked if we were on any dining plan, and I said "no". I could not see he face to well as she was standing next to me but my wife was looking directly at her. After she left my wife commented that you could see a sign of relief in her face when I told her we were not on any plan. I can only imagine it was relief in not having to deal with a plan meal.

I still have nightmares about that thing they call Alfredo!!!!!! I still cant go to an Italian restaurant back home because I get this sick feeling and a gross taste in my mouth  Then my dh laughs at me and walks around saying bonjorno(sp?) :guilty: Its just pasta with melted cheese and it made me gag... oh and dont go expecting to have a nice quiet meal because you are crammed so close together that you cant even get out of your seat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then don't ever go to Italy as most of the restaurants there are like that
:earsboy:

We have always had good service but I think alot of it has to do that I speak to them in Italian and usually find someone that is from a nearby town from where I was born

I have never been to Italy but my cousin is getting married there and I am definately going...crowded tables and all! My grandfather used to talk to us in Italian but I never learned enough to converse. I wish I had. I think the world is such a small place and it is so nice to connect with people. I actually bumped into my old camp counselor (from Israel) on an obscure street corner in Paris. You never know!

I see that there are already 4 pages on this subject but I feel like I need to throw my 2 cents in anyway:

Alfredo's is that bad!!! :Pinkbounc

The dining room is very big and the tables are crowded. I found my waiter to be very snooty. They really push the wine there and as soon as they realize you aren't going to order a bottle; you don't get the time of day.

I had the fettucine and it was gross. Clumpy and luke warm. DH had some kind of pasta sampler which he said was just ok. It is below average food for an above average price. It was the only meal at Disney (which came in at about $74) that I actually felt bad about paying for.

My husband and son liked it - they had the fettucine.

The tiramisu was tasteless, and my "ala vodka" too sweet. As was the sauce on my daughter's spaghetti. But both mousses were good.

We were in the back room, it didn't feel crowded to me. Service was good, but we probably had drinks.

I thought it pretty pricey - but I think we will end up back there again. My husband really liked the fettucine.

(Third generation Italian, but it didn't taste like Grandma's to me, nor did I taste like what I've had in Rome, Florence or Venice - but when I went to Europe I was a poor college student, so we didn't eat fancy, probably not a fair comparison to Roman street pizza. But I do agree that everything was seated much "tighter" in Europe.).

I wish we had a ADR for this trip for Alfredo's. We are learning (trying to anyways) Italian for an upcoming trip to Southern Italy. I'd love to "practice" a little. Guess I'll just have to shop in the Italy Pavillion.

Curious about your take on how authentic the food at Alfredo's is.

We went there years ago and loved it but went back last year and the year before and was very disappointed we gave them the second shot thinking maybe it was just a bad night but 2 strikes your out.We are going to disney in april and will pass it this time.

The items I have had I found to be authentic. The lasagna is just like we make at home with the bechamel and meat sauce instead of ricotta cheese, with a hint of nutmeg and cinnamon. This is the way the western part of Sicily makes their lasagna. We also like the fettucini and my kids like their red sauce, they don't like any red sauce at any other restaurant in Disney. When they have ordered I have always sent back their order and gotten something else, they no longer order anything with sauce at Disney except for Alfredo's or Palio

Other things we have had that we liked
Calamari
Anything with their Bolognese sauce
Grilled veal chop
Breaded and fried veal chop (not always on the menu)

I do think that $6 for one cannoli is outrageous and I refuse to order that, I also think that their appetizer for $24 is overpriced. I don't order the tiramisu because I have never found one that we like better then the way my sister in law (she is from Palermo) makes it, Alfredo's included

My sister on her very first trip to Disney dined there and her and her husband had a blast. My brother in law is also from Southern Italy and didn't move here until he was in his late teens. They both enjoyed the food and had about 3 of the people that worked there go to their table when the server found out where they were originally from. Those 3 people were from a neighboring town

We were there last year with a total of 8 people, 6 of which grew up with Italian cooking, and all enjoy it very much

This is one of the restaurants that you have to decide for yourself if you like it or not. You will get as many people saying they liked it and just as many that didn't

I stayed away from it from a long time due to the reviews here but finally decided to try it and liked it. When we are in the mood for Italian and don't want fancier offerings, like Palio, we dine here

Thanks ga9497.

Funny what you said about the Red Sauce. I was never happy with my Red Sauce. After dining at Alfredo's, I started making my sauce like theirs & I love it. I realized I was muddying the flavor by putting too much stuff in it. I really like the pure flavors of a simple sauce.

No matter how much I have enjoyed Alfredo's, I can't WAIT to eat my way thru Southern Italy!

Your welcome

You will love Southern Italy. I haven't been back in 4 years and am really itching to go. Went with hubby, kids (4 and 6 then), inlaws and my mother also came and we had such a good time that everyone is still talking about it
Hopefully we can get back there in 2007

Where are you visiting?

I have been there 3 times, once in 92, once in 2000 and another in 2004. Everytime we left disappointed. I love Italian food but this is basically Olive Garden 3x as expensive and probably not even that good. the time in 92 was probably the best and it was during lunch. The waiters even danced and acted out - very cool but still poor food. The last two times it was SO lame. Also the atmosphere is LOUD and the tables are so close together that the persons in the table next to me were actually closer then my husband across the table. Staff is stuffy as well. I recommend LeCellier over this place anyday.

I love Alfredo's and it's our favorite restaurant. I had a salad and fettuccine and both were sooo good. The desserts looked so delicious but I was too full to eat anymore. I'm definately having dessert next time though! :) The service was amazing. Our server started speaking Italian with us (can't understand a word of it!) and then he switched over to Spanish. It was a lot of fun. :)
