My son's birthday is coming up, and I thought that perhaps I would buy some Disney stock for him. The problem is that I have never purchased stock from any company before and am not sure how it works, or what the minimum purchase would be. I recall hearing that some companies have programs for kids. Any idea how this can be accomplished without spending a large sum of money? I just want him to feel like an investor and own a little piece of the mouse.

Yes you can:

The Walt Disney Company is pleased to offer The Walt Disney Company Investment Plan, a direct stock purchase plan designed to provide investors with a convenient method to purchase shares of Disney common stock and to reinvest cash dividends in the purchase of additional shares.
Key Features of the Plan:
· If you currently own fewer than 10 shares of Disney common stock, or do not currently own any shares of Disney common stock at all, you may join the Plan by completing an enrollment form and either making an initial cash investment of at least $1,000 or authorizing monthly deductions of at least $100 from a qualified bank account for the purchase of Disney common stock.
· If you currently own at least 10 shares of Disney common stock, registered in your name, you may participate in the Plan simply by completing and returning an enrollment form. If you own at least 10 shares but they are currently held by a bank or broker in its name (that is, in "street name"), you will need to instruct your agent to convert the shares to certificate form, registered in your name, in order to participate.
· Once you have enrolled, you may make additional investments of $100 or more by check or money order or through automatic monthly deductions from a qualified bank account.
· All cash dividends will be reinvested automatically in additional shares of Disney common stock.
· As a participant, you may (but are not required to) deposit your Disney common stock certificates with the Plan Administrator for safekeeping.

I have purchased through oneshare.com and I think if you go to allearsnet.com or mousesavers.com (I honestly can't remember which one), they list a promo code for a discount on your purchase.

ooh just decided what to get the kids for Birthdays this year.

I am going to buy through oneshare.com, I think. My only question for them is what happens if we want to buy more.

I gave him a choice between a video game and this...and he chose this. Nice!

We bought our son 1 share thru oneshare.com with a Mousesavers discount. They frame the stock certificate and you can have a message put on the frame. It looks great on the wall of our son's room.

If you want more than 1 share, go thru Disney direct or open a discount brokerage account and buy thru them.

You can easily open up a brokerage account and purchase additional shares.

I purchased my one share of Disney from oneshare.com back in 1997. It was over $100 just for the stock back then.

i wouldn't consider the one-share thing a real investment. it's for fun.

if you really want to start investing in disney, you should use the direct plan or buy through a brokerage. (but for investing in general, you're probably better off buying a mutual fund.)

I believe the stock split in 1998 so your one share should be 3 now :) Of course its only worth $31 per share as of this morning.
