2020 is more recent than your polls. And I quoted it because it summed up multiple polls.

But here: your information is still outdated
Stop, UC Berkeley being the author of this is all I needed to see. You should have stuck with wikipedia :rotfl2:

Reading the article, it appears researchers had a conclusion to their study decided and did the research to support their conclusion.

I am not wild about the name. However it makes some activists feel better but who cares really.

However Wahoo needed to go. He was a bit much.

2004 and 2016 polls of Native Americans found 90% had no problems with professional sports team names. A 2014 poll showed that 23% of non-Native Americans thought the team name "Redskin" was offensive. So isn't this actually a case of non-Native Americans trying to "nativeamericansplain" to the actually Native Americans? And yes I am copyrighting the term "nativeamericansplain."

The fact that you typed this whole paragraph up without once using the word 'Indian' might explain why the team decided to change the name.

'Indian' was a historically incorrect term to use for Native Americans. The fact that we've used it for over 500 years doesn't make it any more correct.

Agreed
2016 was a Washington Post poll.
2004 was an Annenberg Public Policy Center poll
2014 was an ESPN poll.

All three of these sources swing to the left.
So link the polls. I'd be interested to see the entire polling methodology. There is no way someone that did a scientifically relevant study that found that Indigenous people don't find that name offensive. In the tribal and pow wow straw polls I've been involved it the number is more like 70%. If I made the closest comparison to the former name of the Washington Football Team, I would be banned for using racial slurs.

much ado about nothing... Indians / Guardians....

Perhaps we should just go back to the original Team city names / League..... Cleveland American... hum.. i wonder if that would irk some folks?

We have bigger fish to fry.. sorry

The bottom line for me is that names and mascots of billionaires' toys don't matter. They are trivia.

Then why spend so much time on this? Personally, I rarely spend time on threads about things that I don’t care about.

It does matter to me, and I’m very glad that the owners either realized the disrespect, or saw that enough people see the disrespect for a change to be a wise business decision.

“Much ado about nothing” unless you are a member of the group being disrespected.

“Bigger fish to Fry” of course, but this was a business making a business decision. We all make work decisions daily that are trivial in the grand scheme of global problems but are important and necessary to our business.

I haven't met anyone disrespected by the name Indians.. i am sure they exist... Sounds like your even clam

Which is it.. a business decision or a moral epiphany?

Did they owners decide the no longer wanted to disrespect a race of people or were they afraid it might hurt their bottom line ($).

The best we can hope for was it was BOTH... but you and i both know it was the latter.. sorry, no praise from me on that count!

I'll do you one better. I am confident that at some time in late 2019 our reality collided with another parallel but slightly skewed reality and we got intertwined. Lets just say, to put it nicely, that our alternate reality was stocked full of lunatics. Like a mixture of a Stranger Things and Man in the High Castle plot. My evidence: people were ripping down or trying to rip down statues of Honest Abe and US Grant. :confused3

I am 100% convinced that when the Cubs won the world series in 2016, it ripped a hole in the space-time continuum and things have never been the same. Hope all you Cubs fans are happy.

People complain about others being "easily offended". Maybe, just maybe, people just be NICE to others. If I may expound...

My ex-MIL told me (as we were looking through proofs from the wedding) that I looked ugly walking down the aisle. When I packed up the pics and walked out of the house, she went on a tear about how I was "too sensitive". Perhaps she should have just kept her opinion to herself (or at least not shared it with ME). Why was that so hard? Just be nice.

I have no problem with trying to be compassionate, polite, welcoming, inclusive, and non-offensive to the best of my ability, and if/when called out on a misstep, I am okay with recognizing that I could have made a better choice of words or actions and correcting course. Why on Earth anyone would want to continue using a name, term, description, or word that someone has said is hurtful is beyond me.

Personal growth is hard. Be better, do better. Never stop learning, growing as a human being.

(Also, the name Spiders would have been terrible because I am scared of Spiders). LOL.

This reminded me of when Dolly Parton changed the name of a restaurant at Dollywood. God I love Dolly Parton. Just be nice. Why would you want to "hurt someone on purpose"?

"There’s such a thing as innocent ignorance, and so many of us are guilty of that," she observes. "When they said 'Dixie' was an offensive word, I thought, 'Well, I don’t want to offend anybody. This is a business. We’ll just call it the Stampede.'"
"As soon as you realize that [something] is a problem, you should fix it," Parton adds. "Don’t be a *******. That’s where my heart is. I would never dream of hurting anybody on purpose."

As I said earlier in the thread, my DH and children are citizens of an indigenous community. DH is active in tribal politics and has family remaining on the reservation although he has never lived there. Due to those connections, I personally know many people who feel disrespected by the names as well as the appropriation and misuse of culture.

Not sure what you meant to type with, “Sounds like your even clam” so I can’t respond to that.

I don’t know why you would expect me to know the motivation for their decision. I’ll call it a good decision regardless.

Sorry, i meant to say (Sounds like your claim).. can't type.

Your not concerned about the motivation, just the outcome.. I would be careful with that approach.. but just that's me...

Regardless, I am happy that you and your DH got the outcome you wanted!
