Interesting childrens names

I've got one of those commonly known/uncommonly spelled names- Kari, I've never minded it, but I always wanted to see it on a pencil growing up and never did....I'm still a little bitter about that..... ;)

My DD is Marisa, Ma ree sa not Ma ris sa, and she always wanted pencils too. Complained all the time, and was annoyed when people refused to pronounce her name correctly. My MIL told us we spelled it wrong.

Now she has her own DD and you guessed it.....no pencil for Kady.

Actually it is Lemonjello. Those Jello twins got around as did Female. Every school district I taught at either had a teacher that taught them or someone that went to school with them.

I believe you are calling me a liar. :furious: I promise you my sister taught a child named Orangejello. Nothing more I can say. If you think I'd passing along a rumor, so be it.

My name is Denae. I hated it growing up, but really like it now.

My maiden names was 13 letters long, and I couldn't wait to get rid of it.

We moved a lot while I was growing up, and every year when the teacher read roll call, she would stop at my name like a deer in the headlights. I would immediately raise my hand and say "that's me." You'd think the teacher would have taken 5 minutes to call my parents and ask how to pronounce my name, instead of making me feel like a nobody.

Anyway, my girls' names are Hannah and Emily - no trouble pronouncing them!

Denae

My sons name is Callum Mackenzie-Foy, Callum is quite common over here but everyone in America cross questions me about it -is it that unusual over there? Its scottish BTW as his Dad was a Mackenzie Clan so we gave him that as a middle name.
I went to school with a Fritha (poor girl had a lisp too!) and a Velven and I know a Senga (mum wanted to name her Agnes but that was too old fashioned so she reversed it!)

I've got Douglas Chatham and Elizabeth (Betsy) Marjorie. Nice, simple, pronouncable.

.

Love it - I have a Joseph Anthony - Joey and a Daniel Quinn - Danny.

I'm not crazy at ALL about (IMO) weird, goofy names. Considering how 'normal and common' Joey and Danny are - theyve been the ONLY Joey and Danny's their entire lives, in school classes, sports, etc. Go figure... :confused3

My cousin once had a foster child named December. I thought it was actually a very pretty name.

Yup. Exactly. My kids are the only Doug and Betsy in the whole school. Kind of ironic that 2 ordinary names are also 2 rare names. We like it like that.

I never said you were lying. In fact I have been told by a number of people that they have taught or went to school with Orangejello and Lemonjello. One of my very good friends told me of the Jello twins at her school in Austin, TX.

My point is that many times, others are telling about them as if it was first person but actually they are repeating something that happened to a friend of a friend. Your sister may very well have had Orangejello in her class or she may be telling of another teacher who that child.

I personally had a child named Nacho in my class and my daughter is friends with a man named Gambel Money. (It sounds like Gamble $) My grandfather's name is D.O. It is not an initial. So yes, there are lots of strange names out there.

...my DD's name is Loralei, pronounced and spelled Lora-lie, but I did not want lie in her name so I changed the lie to lei. So now we just politely corect when people call her Loralee, which is correct for the spelling.
I think your spelling is "correct" for the pronunciation. The name is of German origin, and in the German language, the first vowel is the silent one. I love the name Lorelei. (Oops, guess I think of it as spelled with an e in the middle!) By any spelling, it's a beautiful name.

How funny!! I knew a girl, friend of a friend who called herself Senga because her name was Agnes and she hated it. Your Senga didn't happen to work in an Irish pub in NJ did she?? LOL

My brothers and I grew up with a very German 3 syllable, 10 letter last name. My parents (thankfully) named us all so we would have 1 syllable nicknames. One brother continued the tradition with his kids (Max and Sam), while the other went for long trendier names (Olivia and Emmeline). It's not that I don't like the names, it's just that with our/their last name, the poor kids will be 13 before they can spell their names!

no but she did work in an indian restaurant in Cornwall! :rotfl2:
interesting though - I'd never heard of it before!

Perhaps 'unusual' names/spellings are more common in certain geographic areas than others. As someone who grew up in California I have seen a wide variation of spelling and names. Some made me wonder what the parents were thinking others were nice. I find that names like Lexus and Mercedes seem rather pompus but don't criticize it as it was their parents choice.

However I have always liked names like Forest, Season, Sierra, Winter, Autumn, and various Celtic names (both DH and My family were origionally from Ireland, DH's mom came to the states as a teenager). In some areas names like Forest and Sierra are VERY commom. I had actually considered Sierra until it started popping up everywhere around me.

I worked as a summer camp counselor and saw quiet the variety of names. Last week during my student teaching I came across a child on the playground named 'Rachet'. I don't know the spelling but I asked him if it was his name and he said that it's his Indian (from India) name.

While I prefer to not be flamed for saying this I think that it's all in the eye of the beholder as to what 'unusual' is. Sure some names may se way out there and you have to wonder what they were thinking but other parents just wanted something a little different from the norm, hence unusual spellings.

I have always liked "normal" names- just never liked the idea of having to constantly explain, spell, or defend one's name because of others' misunderstanding. Also, it always seemed to me that naming kids a weird name has more to do with the parents wanting to be "unique" than thinking about what the child will go through with that weird name.

Our DD is Katherine Michelle- we call her Katie for short. Both DH and I loved the name Katie, but neither wanted to name her a nickname, so we went with Katherine. That way, she can be Katie now, and when she's older, if she wants to sound more "grown up", she can be Kate, Kathy, Kat, or Katherine- lots to choose from. We decided on Michelle because it sounded pretty with Katherine, and my very best friend's name is Michelle.

Nobody in our family has a super unusual name- DB and DSIL named their three Zachary Millslagle, Savannah Allison, and Tyler Matthew. They aren't bizarre, but are kind of trendy- Zachary was hugely popular in 1990, Savannah was just getting popular in 1993, and Tyler is still pretty popular- really big in 1995, too.

DSIL and DBIL named their 3 Tessa Suzanne, Kenneth Alexander, and Emma Nicole. All 3 are family names. Tessa is a bit unusual, but Emma is really popular right now. DSIL's grandfather was Kenneth, so that's what they named him. The only thing I don't like about their names is that they have a last name (Beck) that doesn't sound good IMO with the first names. Too many short E sounds all together.

im like crashing this thread but just had to put my name as a interesting its Katia :teeth:

My fiance's last name is a very German 4 syllable, 12 letter last name. I keep teasing him that when we get married I'd like for him to instead take my very simple British 2 syllable, 7 letter last name :rotfl:

I have a friend who has 2 daughters... Crisina and Shyana. Crisina was always getting called Cristina so she shortened their names to Sina and Shya.
I have another friend who has a daughter names Isla (pronounced eye-la). We loved that one so much we wanted to use ot for our daughter, but they didn't like that idea. hehe.
All three girls are absolutely beautiful... just like their names! :goodvibes

Had to laugh at your remark! I have taught public school for years and the names get worse and more ridiculous each year! The trend now seems to be to put apostrophes (usually several) in the middle of the name - makes no sense to me.......
