Insuring DVC point vacation?

Friends of ours may be renting our points...

How much would the insurance cost for a 134 point stay?
Should we pay that, or would this be something that they would/could pay for if they wanted it?
And how does it work if they did have to cancel?

Is there anything else that we should advise them of? Any words to the wise would be much appreciated

Insurance may be purchased thru DVC. It will be in your (the member's) name and will pay $5 per point if terms of the policy are invoked. You will NOT get the use of your points back.

I'd expect that the one using the reservation would be the one interested in insurance (if at all) and should be the one to pay for it. Since it may not cover the cost of the rental, it could be of little use. Information about the insurance will be included in the confirmation letter sent to you.

Few on this board have reported using the insurance offered by DVC.

I'm guessing here, that if we do get the insurance, IF the reservation were to be cancelled, the policy would go into effect immediately?? Would we have the option to put those points into holding, or are we left with no other option than to take the $5/point...

Our UY is June, the rentees are traveling in July, and we would be borrowing a portion of points from 2006 for them..

If your use year is June and the renters are traveling in July and cancel, you will be able to bank your points. The only time I even considered buying the insurance was when my grandmother was dying, and I was afraid we might have to cancel last minute. As it turned out, we decided to not get the insurance, because we would have sent our guests anyway and would have joined them later if necessary. As it turned out, she passed away a couple weeks before the trip. Since there is no way to recover the points themselves, I don't really see the value in the insurance unless there is no way to bank or use the points.
