Do you guys usually get it?

If you don't get it, what's the penalty for canceling or how does it work if something should happen?

Thanks!

IMO trip insurance is for suckers. A fool and his money are soon parted, is a proper expression for trip insurance. The chance that you could have a claim of any amount is terribly low. If you have someone in your party who is terminally ill that may be a reason to use it.

At DLR for Hotle only reservations you can cancel up to 5 days of check in fee free. Within 5 days you loose the first nights rent plus tax.

For Packages you can cacel upto 30 days of check in fee free. Within 30 days you loose $200.

My last trip I bought it due to an unstable job I had.

Sickness, weather and loss of jobs are the three main concerns. If it were hurricane season where you are flying from, you are prone to flu/colds during the travel season, or if you think you might be laid off and the loss of job would cause you to cancel a trip, then I'd buy it.

But most times, definitely not worth it.

After having to cancel a trip less than a week before we were set to leave in January, I've started either purchasing insurance or making sure that reservations are cancellable if my mom is involved, as her health is not well (she had a stroke just days before our family trip to Sea World/Disneyland in January. I was glad I was able to cancel our Anahiem hotel, so I only had to be out the cost of our San Diego hotel nights, which were through Hotwire).

I still don't purchase insurance if the trip only involves my DH and our girls.
