Paul, I am really sorry to hear this :(

I think the answer to your question will be yes, but expect a stiff premium.

oh Paul what a shame,

My Dad had a Heart-bypass in 1996 and has travelled to American nearly every year since. The only thing is I feel in recent years insurance companies have got more stringent in that my Mum had a stroke last July and we had to shop around. The Premium she paid was high but at least she got and could get insurance so don't worry he will get insurance.

Thanks for the reasuring replys

DMIL had a heart value replacement in April 2004 and once her consultant gave her the all clear to travel I called VH to book the holiday in May 2004 to travel in Oct 2004, and they put me through to a clearing center who asked her medical questions gave a ref number and told us all ok and she was covered under the VH insurance. I was quite surprised that it went that easy.

Claire ;)

DW had a brain haemorraghe in 2004 (at the grand old age of 36!!) our Insurance company will cover her for everything but anything to do with the haemorraghe at no extra cost
SD :woohoo:

Main thing is in geeting the Insurance you need to check they have not excluded the condition. They may charge you the extra premium but also exclude the condition you have declared.

I would always insist on something in writing - some proof that you declared it to them and they are covering you for it.

My husband had the exact same problem when we travelled with Virgin, his insurance covering I think 28 days was over £200 so very expensive.

I would shop around before going again

unfortunately i have not had such a good eperience with insurace companies, i have had cancer in my eye and also have crohns disease and so far quotes for our trip in Dec have been £3000 most and £1000 cheapest !!!!! if any one knows of any sympathetic companies i would be most gratefull.

Try www.allcleartravel.co.uk.

Paul I have only just seen this thread and suggest you have a look at the British heart foundation website. They list insurance companies that are sympathetic to people with heart problems.

For our holiday earlier this year we used free spirit for DH who has a heart condition~not the cheapest but they have an online medical questionnaire so you don't have to ring up at all. Having been refused by so many companies including Virgin who we had booked through we were just relieved to get cover. However for next years holiday we are going to try Global Insurance in Worthing which has been recommended on another website.

cheapest Mum and Dad got was £1200 with M & S . they went for the £1300 with SAGA because the excess was £50 whereas the £1200 the excess was £1000

catrinuk. it was Mums stroke that seemed to be the problem. Dad had had a by-pass and has prostrate cancer is part came to £300 the remainder being for my Mum which made it high. the other side of the coin is my son broke his neck 4 years ago playing rugby and is now quadrapletic and M & S will cover us all including him for £140. no rhyme or reason to it all. just about to phone around for our holiday next year for Mum and Dad so will see what happens as Dad will be 76.

Paul, I've just got insurance for my Dad from a company recommended by Which? They've taken his heart problems into account and charged him an additional £70 for the cover. I'll find out which company it was with and will post again shortly.
