Personally I feel that most of the Threads and the CB in general is pretty tame. But that's just my opinion. I do realize that some of the things posted are over-the-top and have to be dealt with.
This got me to thinking about Children and what they are exposed to on Television. I don't know how the TV networks can get away with some of the things they air. I think it was Nickelodeon that my 9 years old son and 6 year old daughter were watching when I saw a commercial for Flatulence (farting) come on. Are you kidding me? Has anybody seen that commercial?
How about MTV? My kids don't watch it yet but I was channel surfing one day. (typical guy with the tv remote :teeth:) I couldn't believe what I saw.
It was a video of a song called "Stacy's mom has got it going on" and it was about a boy and girl who looked to me to be about 12 or 13 years old tops. Well the boy is ignoring Stacy and has the hots for Stacy's mom and mom is in these suggestive poses etc... What are they trying to do to kids these days? Is this type of programming appropriate to you? Do you want your kids exposed to all this stuff? It's hard for them not to see these days. Not only that but the way kids dress these days is rediculous also.
I guess my point here is that this CB site is very tame compared to what kids are exposed to on Television etc... All I see on television for the most part is sex and violence. It's not all but I'm sure you know what I mean. They don't seem to hide anything. Do you think TV has gone over-the-top these days?
Any thoughts on this?

Yes I have..which is why I am SO glad we have a V-Chip in our TV. DS is not old enough to care about TV.....yet. But when he is, then we'll turn that sucker on.
Right now, in order to keep some of the more violent/suggestive/destructive things on TV away from him, we either don't watch or tape it and watch it when he's asleep.

Don't feel bad..we don't have cable either right now because we can't afford it.
Even then, I usually watched VH1 because MTV has turned into "STUPIDITY television". They don't show as many music videos as they used to when I was a kid. And when they do, it's all crap. You're not missing anything on MTV, trust me.

It all comes down to greed in these politically correct days we live in. The networks feel they must continually push the limits to keep viewers, because if they don't some other network will. Nothing can be labeled as obsene these days as it may hurt someones feelings and you know we can't do that.

PS:
You'll probably get bashed for trying to "shield you children from the world they live in". Just because something is happening doesn't make it healthy or mean you should expose you kids to it. I dropped my cable because I was tired of seeing half naked people running around sleeping with whomever is next in line.

The thing is I don't shield my children from it. I don't watch them every second to see what they are watching. If I see them starting to watch something I deem inappropriate I will tell them to change the station. But sometimes the damage is done by the time I catch them watching something.

You know what aggravates me also? It's when I take the kids to see a PG rated movie and some of the previews they show are over-the-top in my opinion. It's amazing what Hollywood and Television in general can get away with. Believe me I'm no prude but it is rediculous what kids are exposed to.

yep, I agree that much of tv is over the top. It is very difficult to shield them from ads, upcoming news stories, and coming attractions for tv and movies.

However, to give you the other side, my dd8 has been scared of our house burning down ever since she experienced her first "fire safety" week at preschool. She came home telling about her assembly in school (3rd grade)...a one woman show who told a story about immigrants coming to America..how a person died and was thrown overboard. That freaked her out more than anything on tv. Last summer my dd 10 took a babysitting class and the teacher described in great detail every possible thing that could EVER go wrong in someone's life. She was upset for weeks.

There was once a time when parents were upset and worried over Elvis shaking his pelvis on national tv...just to put things in perspective. Seems pretty tame now, by comparison, huh?

I think there is a lot of crap on tv, that I certainly do not want my new baby neice exposed to. However, I don't think anything should be banned or censored either. You were watching MTV which I don't really think the average parent is allowing their small child to watch. In your house, you can control what comes on your tv with things like the chip and even more basic - the remote.

When I was a small child, we're talking maybe 10 years old, I had my own tv and cable in my bedroom, with ALL the movie channels. My parents never censored anything I watched. And let's just say I watched some stuff a 10 y.o. probably would not watch. But I turned out okay. I never became a sociopath or a serial killer because of the horror movies I watched or the other movies I snuck peaks at on late night cable.

I'm not saying parents should encourage their kids to watch R (or worse) rated movies that are violent or sexual in nature. But if they happen to see something briefly at someone else's house where you can't control the viewing, it's not going to destroy them. They'll probably giggle at nudity and be grossed out by gore. That's what I did and what most of my friends did. As I got older into my teens, I grew bored by that stuff and tended to flip more towards popular movies and sitcoms.

Oh - as for the "fart" ad....there are numerous childrens books about farting and other gross bodily functions. I worked in a Discovery type toy store for several years, and work at a publishing company now. When I worked in the store, we used to sell science kits and the most popular one with little boys was all about icky bodily functions. I don't know how to break this to people but...kids think farts are funny, they always have. I think that's a pretty harmless thing for an elementary school kid to be amused by really. Basically, if a story has farts, underpants, or nose picking in it, the 5-9 year old crowd is going to think it's hilarious. I say, if it gets them reading and/or interested in biology, it's a good thing...

The best thing you can really do is instill good values and personal manners in your kids. I truly think if a kid has good parents and a good value system, whatever they see on tv is not going to have a very deep effect on them. The ones who are effected by tv usually have much deeper issues going on.

If you have charter then I would go through the channels and parental control stations like MTV that you do not want your kids to peruse through. We have done this, can't control all it like the commercials they see etc. but it helps. I never thought I would say this, but thank God it is little league season! :rotfl:

I don't like your tone!

Ok, ok, really it's the Red Sox logo I don't like ;)

::yes:: I will never understand parents that are offended by farting. It's a natural bodily function. And like you said, kids think it's FUNNY. And there's nothing wrong with that. I can understand parents wanting to keep their kids from watching shows with sex and violence. But farting? It's harmless. Sure it smells a bit but... :confused3 I don't know. To each their own I guess.

:rotfl2: Yes, my son brought home a book one day titled "Walter the Farting Dog". I LMAO but I guess I'm old fashioned. I thought it was an odd book to write. To sum up the story...the boy's house was being robbed and the dog saved the day by "gassing the would be robbers". They passed out from the stink and the cops nabbed them. Horray for Fido! :rotfl2:

That book was hilarious :teeth:

And another thing...

I have cable. I am an avid watcher of the Discovery channel, Discovery Times, Animal Planet, the Travel Channel, History, History International, Science Channel and National Geographic. I frequently flip these channels on when I'm doing housework to have something in the background. With the occasional exception of a Levitra or Viagra ad (most of which I think a small child would be oblivious to anyway) I have never seen any nude people sleeping with every other person on these cable channels. Once in a very, very rare while, there will be semi nudity on a Discovery channel documentary, such as the ones about primitive cave people or something, where the people are wearing minimal clothing to be historically accurate.

Come to think of it, I also flip to the HGTV channel, and sometimes I watch The Disney channel. Never saw anything like that on those channels either.

What channels are you all watching?

That book was a bestseller (not for my publishing place, sadly, I forget who put that one out). It was a bestseller because little kids love farting.

esmeraldax.. you are so right. today a lot of people forget there are 2 'knobs' on the tv/2 'buttons' on the remote. They 'change channel'/'turn off'. I was 'there' for Elvis and Ed Sullivan. I was 'there' for the British Invasion. 50 years from now something else will cause concern. A hundred years ago when a good portion of the population lived on farms, youngster saw animal births; saw animal matings. Did they become sociopaths?

While I think the TV show "Two and half men" is hilarious it's TOTALLY inappropriate for the time slot it was on the other day. It had some really suggestive moves by Heather Lockleer on Charlie Sheen.

I do believe they push the limit until the limit moves then they push again.

We also have parental controls on our TVs. Many times it blocks out "good" shows and we have to override it, but it is worth having the blocks on just in case the kids come across something they should not see.

The ones I hate are the Showtime commercials on the Food Network. Some of those are too creepy for me! And unfortunately we watch that channel often.
