Okay from day one when John-Cole started Private School there has been one boy named "Jay" that was known as the nerd. I told John-Cole over and over to be nice to this child and to include him. I would get rolled eyes etc from John-Cole but he always promised me he wouldn't and wasn't mean to Jay. I stressed this every time he was mentioned. Well the other day I was late picking up J.C. because we were moving and when I got to the school there were only about 5 children left Jay being one of them. Well J.C. gets in the car and says "mama I'm sorry but I couldn't be nice to Jay." I said Why?? He said well when you were late Jay said "Your mom is never late" and J.C. said "They are moving thats why shes late." (which is true!) Jay says "no it isn't she was in a horrible accident!" Well J.C. told him to shut up and Jay keeps on and on and J.C. said "mama I wanted to punch him!" Thank goodness he didn't! Anyway I told J.C. to just ignore him but don't be mean to him.....how would you handle that? We are talking about 11 year olds!

The mods or the, how does EROS say it-the distraught members of the DIS might get tense at the word Nerd, Beth.:p

while some people are outcasts because of the way they look, the only people i can remember ever thinking of as "school nerds" were outcasts because they would do and say really annoying or thoughtless things... like that Jay kid.

I'm with the Doc, I would not call that a nerd either.

Thats just someone who said something silly, and I have a boy. Many many silly things come out of his mouth.

I was a cross between nerd/punk rocker. (If there ever was a mix I was it). I had perfect attendance, honor roll, didn't really drink, hung out with the "smart" kids and the "outcast" kids.

My son is one of "smart" ones. He has been ostracized for it. But he just takes pride in who he is. (Somedays its not easy)

That kid isn't a nerd.... he's cruel...... kind of a passive bully if you will. I'd tell my kid to stay away from him.... kind of sick if you ask me.

I think it is possible that Jay is a nerd. One who may be picked on and ignored because of himself even. He saw a chance to inflict pain on JC and he did it. He's probably hurting inside and chose to say something crazy to try and hurt your son (& put doubt about where his mom was and why she was late.)
I'm in no way saying that Jay was right or anything. But I do think he said it for a reason. Probably a lot of pain in that child and he probably is backward enough that he doesn't even know how to interact with the kids.

I'm in TOTAL agreement with Buck:D . I'm NOT excusing Jay's behavior, but I'd like to point out the the school "nerds" are often kids with severe learning disabilities, including Asperger's Syndrome or NLD. They need a great deal of intervention and support in addition to appropriate discipline. :) :)

I agree with Buckalew and Eros.

Gawd. I never thought I'd see someone use the word 'Asperger' on one of these chat boards. One of my boys suffers from a mild case of high functional level autism (Aspergers syndrome), and I was pig-headed enough to try and keep him in public school for three terrible years. He hated school, always was the kid that noone would play with, had zero friends, and was in detention contantly (for saying tacky things like the comments above). Now, in an environment where uniforms are worn (no kids dress better or worse than others), where pragmatic skills are a regular part of the day (Good morning Miss Jones, Thank you Mr smith), and where self worth is extrememly high on the teaching cadre's priorities, he is thriving. Has won TWO art related awards, has dozens of friends, is in Cub Scouts, and is normal-er than Theodore Cleaver.

Sometimes (not always of course), there are other forces at work that make kids get categorized as the 'geeks' or 'nerds'...

(hakuna matata).

I always thought a nerd was one that wore floods or the fred mertz high waisted pants with the button down shirt tucked in. They could also have the glasses with the tape on the bridge part and the pocket protectors. LOL quite a vision huh?
