A (no-longer new) training log (comments welcome)

  • I only finished because of my earlier optimism about training I put in a 5:30 time for my estimate (I'd never run a half over 2:30 on race day before)
  • I haven't appreciably lost weight because I wasn't training as consistently as I wanted, and my dietary work was inconsistent.

A couple of comments.
  • My only marathon outside of WDW has been the Marine Corps Marathon. Using the 2x Half + 20 minutes formula I thought I might finish the MCM in 5 hours. It took just under 6.
  • As for weight, I've learned the hard way that exercise doesn't have quite as much effect as one would think, that the diet work has a lot more impact. The exercise is needed, to be sure, but being more diligent about what I eat is what gets the pounds off.

YMMV. Kudos on the finish, and enjoy the hiking.

yeah, I am fully aware of the "you can't outrun your fork" adage, but I did not take it to heart ;)

Sunday funday: 3.01 mile 38:17. should have stuck it out for the 5k, but I was following the workout plan from garmin and didn't really think about it until I saw there was a Garmin weekend 5k badge today :)

10 miles this week, mostly runs with no RWR for now. average pace is about 4.5 mph

some foot pain. I'm resting for a second day after I experienced pain at the beginning of a run. I'm resting until it feels better. I'm hoping it's inflammation and not something like a stress fracture. :(

feels better today but gonna let it feel all the way better. that's heartening that it's probably not a stress fracture.

this week, 2 mile walk with DS and DD yesterday. 6 mile hike (1700ft elevation gain) with DS today.

on to next week: goal is 3 30 min runs.
Where do you go for you hikes? I live in south Louisiana and the only time I get to add those kinda elevations gains are when I went to the Smokey mountains. Biggest hike on the last trip was the Alum Cave Bluff Trail which had around 1150' of gain. I also ran a 5 mile race that had 1675' of elevation gain called the Bear 5 Miler somewhere near Blowing rock NC. Hills absolutely kill me since all we really have is overpasses and the levee to train on them lol.
Keep up the work and hope to hear more about your hikes!

we have a series of hills around us including Mount Diablo State Park (el 3890 at peak) called the Diablo range. we can also drive to the oakland hills which top out around 1400 ft. The extents of the open space around the state park back up to our neighborhood,
but the summit is a 25 mile, 5kft roundtrip, so I haven't done that yet.

Generally in our area the watersheds around reservoirs were turned into parkland between 1920 and 1960 and the local agencies spun off a regional parks district (EBRPD) which maintains trials and some camping in them. This last hike was in Las Trampas regional park which is pretty wild and open, and right behind Eugene O'Neil's house in Danville, CA.

we're prepping for a 12 day trip at Philmont scout ranch in New Mexico, not a ton of miles but a bunch of elevation at altitude. Last time we went we met a bunch of scout crews from Florida, Louisiana and Texas, and they mostly did stairs in buildings or bleachers with their packs on to prepare. That's a lot less pretty.

Foot is feeling better today, I'm going to do a short walk tomorrow to gauge, not right back into running yet.

our little local myth is that mount Diablo can be seen from one of the largest areas of anywhere in the world, because on the back side is the central valley which is 600+ miles of dead flat. It's not true but the view is great( just not today in the rain)

That’s good news it’s not serious and the cause identified hope the walk confirms 👍

6.41 miles and 2000ft elevation gain with a full pack this weekend.

not a high heart rate except for the last half mile (13% grade) but a good test of the foot over distance. no pain, no discomfort.

foot pain not an issues, back running. Signed up for halloween half and CIM.

need to set some realisitic goals but overall:

  1. continuing my general health improvement
  2. weight loss with diet to targeted weights by end of June
  3. I'd like to be at 2:30-2:45 half for Halowween Half.
  4. I'd like to be at 6 hrs for CM.
morning run today, 3.25 mi, heard turkeys but did not see, ducks out in force.

Yesterday 6.5 mile hike with pack and scouts. so this was a slower run.

Good run this morning. Down over 10 lbs since the marathon. fastest 5k in 7 years. just a minute or two to get below my 2017 times. 12 minute miles felt comfy (until the hill to come home :) )

I don't have good access to my older times, haven't been a good digital archivist on that front.

21.5 miles of walk/hike/run last week. good week.

I've set a VF goal for the month because I'm training for hiking, and I'm about 30% there.

and I set my 5k PB this morning (modern era, known times) I wonder if I can find my old times in some digital archive somewhere.

ok, so I took a 5 minute break at work and googled this. I can individually download my 72 activities on map my run and import them 15 at a time into strava... and in map my run my 5k record is 5:30 min faster :)

but that's still doable!

It's nice to have old data--even if it's just to jog your memory. Somewhere along the way, I've lost most of mine in transitioning watches/tracking programs. My only hope is that I have something exported that I stashed on a hard drive somewhere.

It looks like I lost one account but kept another. I think I lost one with more history. I do have a spreadsheet with all my race finish times over the years. but not my training runs from say, 2010
