We've taken in a stray, the sweetest 34 lbs of doggie... who has destroyed every toy we've given him so far. I bet I have bought $100 worth of toys so far. He even destroys those toys rated to be extra tough. Any suggestions for good chew toys, he prefers something fabric.

Tuffy toys, they come in different tough ratings and the red ones are the toughest.

The black Kong toys. Red is 'normal', black is extra tough, and blue/pink is very soft for puppies. Not fabric though. Some dogs like to de-stuff toys, maybe try the stuffingless flat cloth toys? That worked for one of my dogs. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks I'll look for those. Who would have thought a little dog like this would be such a chewer. I'm used to big dogs ... he's already been through more toys in a week than my 120 lb lab did in 5 years.

DD's dog :dog: eats EVERYTHING, even her sofa ... the arms .... but she loves her "feral" pup.

He does not destroy these, they last a very long time ... and come in different flavors.

I second Kong toys. Our golden retriever destroys everything except Kong within minutes. His Kong toys he's had for at least a year and they are doing great.

We use antlers with our 70 lb lab-hound mix. He loves to chew, especially if it has stuffing and/or a squeaker in it. Whole (not split) antlers last him a while- some are better quality than others (or maybe fresher?), so last longer. Nylabone and Kong also work for him, but the antlers are the best.

You're really not going to be able to find any fabric or stuffy type toys that will survive an aggressive chewer. They are just not made for that and some dogs (mine included) take great joy in seeing how fast they can disassemble one of them. LOL Best luck I have had with "soft" toys of any kind with mine (hard chewers that are 100lbs dogs) are the ones made from firehose and/or jute. They are not immune to being destroyed, but they do last a little longer. Both of my current dogs dislike the rubber kongs, but like the squeezz toys made by Kong for when they want a toy that makes noise. My younger one likes her Kong wobbler and will even play with it when not filled with food. They also both loves balls. We have rubber balls, kong squeaky balls, rope balls and tennis balls....the latter survive sometimes 10 minutes sometimes months....but they play with those daily. I also provide them things that really are meant to be just laid with and chewed hard. Mine like nylabones and deer antlers. I'd get him a few things like that and let him get his chewing satisfied.

regards

My super sweet golden retriever tears through all his toys. The one that lasts is the Nylabone that Hopper posted a picture of. We can usually get 3 months out of one. At any given time I have 6 or 8 in my house. If you go to Costco, they were selling a 3 pack of smaller nylabones for a decent price.

Mom to two large Labs here.
Kong toys. And the one made out of fire hose mentioned earlier. Basically anything that is super cute is a no. Oh.. we've had success with the rope toys made of recycled cloth too. They play tug with it so there's no chewing.
My vet highly recommended not given the antlers or any nylabone that doesn't have any "give" to it. He says he sees too may dogs that need broken back teeth removed. I do give my dogs bones from the butcher but once the meat is gone it goes in the garbage.

I've got a 10 pound monster dog that destroys every toy she gets except for one old Kong bone shaped toy that she's had for a few years. It's the only thing she hasn't demolished in about an hour or less.

I've gotten antlers for my labs before and they last a long time, but oddly enough the best thing for my two is the stuffing-less squeaky toys. They destroy the squeaker in about 5 minutes, but the toy themselves will last forever. They will play tug with them and just gnaw on them all day long. I have a basket full of these half dead toys.

If you bought toys from Petsmart or Petco you can bring them back with your slip for a refund. I have a corgi that will destroy a stuffy in seconds to get the squeaky out. He doesn’t like toys like the Kong that don’t squeak. For the stuffy toys, I wait till the go on sale like after the holidays for themed stuffy, so if the reindeer I got after Christmas is destroyed in six minutes, I paid 1.50 for it. He has yak chews and bully sticks for longer chewing needs.

Thanks everyone... I'll give some of these suggestions a try. I didn't know you could return toys to Petco and Petsmart... I've thrown them all away.

The squeaker is always the prized possession here. I tried all kinds of expensive toys and gave up. Now I just buy cheap toys from the dollar store. They get great pleasure in ripping them open and flying stuffing all around the room in search of the squeaker. Which I then take off of them or they try to eat it. :D

1.5 year old pit bull - the toy that she loves the most and that has taken all her chewing with very little damage is an old Lacrosse ball. Nothing else (except her Kong) has lasted more than a few hours unless our little dog has managed to sneak it away and hide it.

I do buy her stuffies when I find them on clearance for less than $2, they keep her busy for about an hour destroying them. Keeping her busy is critical, otherwise she goes looking for stuff to destroy.

Disney stuffed animal! I had two 40/45 lb dog - one cattle dog/aussie and the other german shep/cattle dog. The only toy in the house that had lasted for 4 years is the white dog we got at the disney store which is about 18-24 inches. I forgot what film it is from. All the rest - they either pulled out the stuffing or don't want it because it is too hard.

We got the #10 Tuffy toys and our huge chewer has had his for years. My vet said never give Nylabone. He said in his forty years of practice he has never seen a dog hurt by rawhides but he’s had three he’s had emergencies with Nylabone. He said they are hard plastic which can cut dogs intestines if swallowed
