Indestructible dog toys?

My dogs like to chew on the Antlers they sell now in pet stores. They aren't allowed to have regular toys because they just destroy them too fast.

We have a giant breed dog. We get the antlers and sheep horns for him, and they last a while. The largest sized rope toys last a while, too, but he doesn't chew on them he just swings them around. We also have a lot of dead trees and wood in our yard that we need to clear out. He just goes back there and helps himself to the trunks and brings them in the house. They're messy, but free. We've given him scraps of wood from the wood shop, too, but he prefers the branches and trunks from the yard.

the only thing that stands up are Nylabones

That's the one toy my vet said to never give my dog. He has seen several dogs with broken teeth and the sharp pieces that can be swollen are not digestible.

My vet also really doesn't like the Nylabones or antlers. He basically said look for anything with a little bit of give to it. If it's too hard it will break their teeth. He said he sees more broken rear molars from bones and Nylabones than any other dental problem. And often people don't realize their dog has a broken tooth for months and the dog is in pain. Not worth the risk to me. We have a lab who is one heck of a chewer. We get him marrow bones from the butcher and throw them out once he's worked on them for a day or two.
We haven't found a toy that couldn't eventually be destroyed but some of the better ones are the Kongs, and the very thick rope toys made of recycled t-shirt. There are thinner cheaper ones I don't like but the ones we have are very sturdy and have held up for over a year.

I have a 55lb Aussie and she would annihilate any stuffy within seconds and I too worried about her swallowing the fluff. I came across the Kong "Wubba" at Petsmart. I bought it xmas eve and it lasted about 1 month BUT! it was her favorite toy ever. She pranced around with it like it was her best friend. It has a similar shape to an octopus. There are 2 balls inside, a tennis ball and a larger rubber squeaker ball. The legs are good to play tug with her or she takes it and shakes her head side to side slapping herself on the cheeks! LOL. It's really a toy that you shouldn't leave down on the floor, because eventually they will chew thru the tough nylon like mine did. When she got the larger ball out, that became her favorite and it's a pretty thick ball that she hasn't even tried to chew, she just throws it around or drops it in front of us. What she does now is push down on the ball with her nose and makes it squeak over and over ;) They do come in 3 sizes I think, I got the largest that they had. We're going to buy another soon since she loved it so much, but we'll keep an eye on this one.

I have a shredded one of those sitting on the counter right now! My 10 pound destructo loved that one too. I think it lasted around a month at our house too, but probably only because she got a ton of toys for Christmas and chose to shred others first! She has half the material torn off around the big ball. I didn't think about pulling the ball out, maybe I will do that before I pitch the rest of it in the trash. I will buy another one of them though, because she did love playing fetch with it and it did make it a few weeks. We have the Kong stuffed bear with a rope interior (Wild Knots) someone else mentioned too. It had patches sewn into it and those got ripped off almost immediately. The bear itself has held up well and she still has it though-I'm not sure how much she actually plays with it though (the Target Crocodile I posted a link to in an earlier post she takes around the house with her all the time and chew on a lot). That bear would be a good option, but I would say take scissors and cut the patches off before ever giving it to the dog. She has a regular original rubber Kong, but she has no interest in it at all.

My vet also does not recommend Nylabones, I have two labs and one is a strong chewer, she broke off a piece of the NylaBone but luckily threw it up, they can cause a costly surgery need. They love Kongs and as soon as the treats are gone, they leave them alone. They love "soft" toys so even after the squeekers and stuffings are out (minutes) they will carry the skins around.

We have had some luck with Kong toys. Fortunately, our dog loves the nylabones too. Stuffed toys last 10 minutes, so we check garage sales, or always look for clearance items at the pet store.

Boomer Balls are indestructible. They make some toys for zoos and use really tough material. The balls aren't too expensive imo, given that they last forever. Haven't tried their other toys. Our lab used to push the 10" ball all around the yard, launching it into the air and generally having a great time. Got rid of a lot of energy with that thing!

As far as chew toys, I guess the toughest thing I've found is the black Kong.

Sometimes I wonder how much veterinary education is standardized. My vet was the one who recommended the antlers and horns for our dog. He was eating everything! And at over 150lbs, it was unreal what he could destroy. He got in to the shoe cabinet and destroyed everyone's shoes in less than 30 minutes. Hundreds of dollars of shoes in teeny little pieces. He's much better now and sticks to his toys.

He loves those Kong Wubba things too.

Maybe this is a bad idea, but I leave most of the dog toys in their packaging and he has to figure out how to get them out. Unless they're wrapped in plastic. That makes them last a little longer.

My dogs loved Splatz that I found at Walmart. They'd get the squeaker out, but they could carry around and chew on the rest of the toy without tearing it up. But I can't find them anymore. They had a nylon netting backing on the fabric that they could not tear apart.

My two Shar Pei love the antlers, but they're so expensive. We've been able to purchase a rack for about $35 at a flea market and DH cuts and sands them. We figured we had about $250 worth from the rack. Moose antlers are a bit softer and neither stink.

I have a smaller dog that's just as dangerous to toys. I've found the West Paw Zogoflex toys to really hold up, and the company will replace a destroyed toy one time if necessary. The bone-shaped one is one of her favorite toys, and it still looks like new, even after more than a year.

My 60+lb boxer mix puppy has had really good luck with antlers. And Indiana Antler Supply has the best prices I have found outside of having a hunter friend willing to give up antlers! He's destroyed several rope toys, multiple tennis balls (I now only buy balls that Have very little "give" in them), and it's almost time to replace the black Kong because he's close to having pieces of it coming apart. We won't even discuss the walls and door jambs he's chewed up.

We've also had our best luck with antlers and Kong. Everything else was chewed to shreds in a day. We still have one rope tug toy, but he only gets to play with that under supervision because he made himself sick eating the strings.

I will also vote for Wubbas and for Go Dog toys-they aren't indestructible, but they hold up really well and some of them don't have much stuffing, which takes a lot of the appeal out of shredding it for my dog.

I work at a pet store, and I frequently suggest to customers with this problem, that they take the toy away from their dog when they are not playing with the dog with it (and ideally, give them something chewing appropriate like a bone or antler instead)-its possible to teach dogs that toys are for playing and not for shredding if you want to!

My dog LOVES her dragons. She has several. She does chew off the scales and eventually destroys them, but they last her a long time. She also always sleeps with one too. They are about $15 at Petsmart for one, but recently Costco has sold them in a 3-pack for under $20. I currently have a stash of dragons.

Looking for something for my young, large dog to play with that he won't destroy! I've tried the Tuff toys and he has them ripped apart at the seams within minutes. I do have the Kong and the water bottle ball but looking for other ideas to keep him busy!
Hi there!!

If you're still on the hunt for indestructible tog toys, Mav4Life dog toys are your answer! I've had mine for about a month and my dog has played with them about every day and i'm seriously impressed at how well they've kept up. I got the 15" Rope Toy because my dog is between medium and small sized and he plays pretty well with that one. They have more to choose from and great info on the rest of the site as well. Good luck!
