Increase in threads getting locked/deleted?

Yes. I think I've seen more warnings and locked threads in the last 2 weeks than I've seen in all the time I have been posting here. I've seen a few posts that were pretty mild get locked.

It does seem that there is a different attitude of the moderation lately. If the owner wants a different vibe, then what can we do? It's their choice, of course; I would never argue against that.

But, I will say that it's frustrating to those who have been here a while to suddenly get talked down to for posting the way we always have...one mod called the Dis a "sandbox" as if we're children. I honestly find that insulting, and I if that is seriously how this board is going, I can't say that I'll stick around.

Chiming in at the risk of being punished for it, but I agree with you. I won't name names, but yes, I feel like a couple of moderators have been jumping in even before anything really heads south to remind us to "play nice", which I find condescending. I won't quote those posts but I'm sure some veterans know what I'm talking about. It feels like Kindergarten. I agree with avoiding personal attacks, but if you're only allowed to make comments that agree with or commend a poster, that's not much of a "discussion".

I too have been kind of teetering on the fence of whether or not to stay or go as of late, and if that's the new environment here, I'll probably just go.

Thanks for putting it this way--I do think that is what is really bugging me most. Threads that would have gone on with no issue at all for the years I have been on the DIS are now suddenly invoking these condescending little comments from moderators I have never seen and getting locked or deleted.

It's hard to know what is or is not acceptable: We can go on for dozens of pages disagreeing in a reasonable manner about the McKinney Texas situation with no issues, but if people disagree in a reasonable way with an OP about a parenting issue or if groceries can be legitimately returned, then that is not OK? Maybe because that is more personal? But if we are not allowed to disagree with someone's stance and explain why, then why are people allowed to start threads asking for opinions about their stance? It doesn't make a lot of sense.

And if there is going to b a major shift in what is allowed it seems that new rules that specifically explain it should be clearly posted on all the boards before long time posters start getting lectures for behaving in a manner consistent with the past several year of board use.

Although I have a fairly low post count and only registered five years ago, I have read the boards since before 2000. I also agree that they are locking relatively benign threads much more often now.

In the last few months too, I have noticed that posting is way down too. The boards used to have many more posts and responses. It is sad actually, as I think it used to be a more entertaining and informational experience.

That says more clearly what I was thinking when I said that I had noticed a shift in what was being closed/deleted (as opposed to mainly a change in the amount of deletion/closing).

Not only does there seem to be an accelerated effort to move the tone of these boards in a specific direction by locking threads or deleting posts, it's been reported on other forums that many members have been completely banned from the site without apparent cause or any explanation. There is a high level of frustration being expressed about this on other Disney forums where the moderation is not as heavy handed.

I've never been one to notice who the mods are and what they will or won't allow, and even I have noticed that there is a new sheriff in town with a quick finger on the "lock thread" button.
I've noticed this also.

I've noticed it too.
Also it seems points for are handed out based on whether the mod agrees with your point of view.
I've seen posters write really unkind, snarky, rude things that were totally uncalled for and the responses end up getting deleted.

I wonder if people are complaining they're being "picked on" and mods are looking at those threads already biased. And, instead of calling out individual posters (for not following board guidelines), they're shutting down entire threads (throwing the baby out with the bath water). I'm guessing the McKinney thread hasn't had any posters complaining.

Last night a series of very disturbing trip reports were deleted
Yea, deleting that one was a mistake IMO. I could understand locking it, but the things that had been posted should have been kept.

I wouldn't believe everything you read on the internet. And if I'm thinking about the same thing you're talking about, I believe all that happened many years ago.

Yes, the excessive finger-wagging is really insulting. Posters know full well what to expect when they put stuff out there asking for opinions. If you don't want my opinion, don't ask for it. This is a public forum, it's not like you need an invitation to get here. A simple Google search will turn up thread results, so it's not like the forums are closed. Also, just because I'm blunt doesn't mean that I'm cruel. There's a difference.

That being said, when threads do get "out of hand" (in the eyes of the mods) I'd much rather see them closed/locked than deleted. When a thread gets *poof* deleted for getting out of hand, then new posters won't know if that topic has already been discussed, so they'll start a new thread on that same topic and it's just like, "...here we go again..." *eye roll*. I saw this happen, what, three times over on the topic of the Duggars.

Totally agree with this. Those of us who have been around a while know who "those" posters are and we know their history. They post the same type of questions or topics over and over, and then get mad when no one tells them what they were hoping to hear. We get called stalkers for mentioning their previous posts, and bullies for telling them the truth instead of saying what they want to hear. I suspect they complain to the moderators and then the moderators close the thread or delete it.

Yes!!!
They thrive on being a victim or fancy themselves as more concerned or better parents!
