Incentive question and do you trust your guide?

Okay, I called my guide to let him know that we wanted to add 125 points. The cruise incentive isn't terribly appealing because 1)we are a family of 5 and 2)we don't like to take the kids out of school and that's the only option with the cruise. So, I called to see when the current incentives end and when new ones will be announced. He calls me back and says that all incentives for BLT are going away and we should buy now if we want BLT (which is what we are leaning toward). He said it is selling so well they don't need to offer incentives anymore. I'm not believing him and thinking he just wants the sale. Am I being too harsh? He wouldn't give me date when these would end either, just "they could end anytime". It just makes me feel like I'm dealing with a used car salesman. Any thoughts??

The cruise is only one of the options for current incentives. Another one is additional dollars off (maybe with a referral?). Check here for details:

I think dollars off is the best incentive you can get, if other options are not feasible. If you are pretty sure you want to buy, I would go ahead. If your guide is being too pushy, ask for a manager to assign you a different one.

I think what your guide is saying is probably true in the sense that the incentives will go away and no one knows for sure whether new ones will take there place. Someone else posted their guide told them they were ending June 15th.

I do believe that the current incentives are great and we just added on 130 at BLT and paid the $96.00 per point!!! I don't forsee them getting much better in terms of price per point--however, it is possible that they could add to it. There is always a risk that something better will come out.

I actually got lucky this last time. I started the add on process in February but changed the contract a few times so it hadn't closed when the new incentives came out April 1st. I was able to stop the original deal and get the new ones. So if new incentives came out before you closed, you would be able to get them.

I ended up using my Disney Visa to pay for the add on which gave me 6 months interest free. It allowed me to buy now instead of waiting until the fall.

But, DVC guides are salesman and of course, they will always try to get you to add on sooner rather than later.

Good luck!

The last info that I had was that BLT is 35% sold and it's incentives will end on June 15th.

Wow, that is actually pretty good taking into consideration the state of the economy and its only been for sale less than a year. Hmm...do you know what the current incentives are? I only have 40 pts. at BLT...:rolleyes1

There are several different incentives right now. You can get a bigger points discount, a free cruise, or AP's.

The points discounts are:

50 - 99 points for $104.00 per point
100 - 124 for $98.00 per point
125+ is $96.00 per point.

I think dvcnews.com has the other ones.!

No...you're being quite sensible.

That's one of those carefully parsed "It depends on what the meaning of 'is' is" statements. He's right in the sense that they could go away at any time. But they won't. June 15 maybe, but not early May.

You're dealing with a timeshare salesman. Many of the Disney timeshare salesmen are quite ethical and straightforward. Some (mine) are dunces who don't know much, but will say anything to make a sale. Others make you wish you were dealing with a used car salesman!

We were just there this week. The salesperson (ours was out and we met with another guy we really liked) said that all the incentives will end on June 15th and there won't be any after that. He didn't say why though.

This is the current Incentives going for purchasing the DVC through Disney.

New Incentive effective 4/1......

New contracts:
$8. discount off $112. for GC & BLT
$10. discount off $112. for AKV
$13. discount off $112. for SSR/THV

These "new owner" incentives are good only with an "existing member referral"..

Existing/New members: (same as the previous incentive)
existing members Add on 100 pts: a 3 night cruise for 4 (160 for newbies)
existing members Add on 125 pts: a 4 night cruise for 4 (200 for newbies)
existinf members Add on 200 pts: a 7 night cruise for 4 (270 for newbies)

OR

These "new owner" incentives are good only with an "existing member referral"..

Newbie..
Take an additional $$ off the already discounted price....
160 pts take $6.
200 pts take $8. etc...

Existing member...
Buy 100 pts take an additional $6. off the discounted price.
Buy 125 pts take an additional $8. off the discounted price.

So...buying into BLT as a newbie...there can be a $14. discount off the original $112. price.

As always call your guide for more "official" answers

I find this very, very hard to believe (I'm not doubting that's what your Guide told you, I just *can't imagine* DVC not offering any incentives). We are in the middle of very harsh economic times and people are stashing away their money and cetainly not spending it on luxury purchases. I think that even in the best of economic times that DVC has always offered incentives to new purchasers, so, again, especially given the economy, that comment rings false with me.

As to the OP, I too believe that your Guide is just being pushy and trying to get you to commit to buying something any way he can. If it's the right decision for you, go for it, but don't let your pushy Guide convince you to do something before you're ready.

Either way, it will be interesting to see what the new incentives are on June 15th.

Thank you all for your input. I was ready to go ahead with things yesterday but after talking with our guide, I just felt like he was being less than honest and it bothered me. I'm with Crystal. I can't believe, in this economy that there won't be incentives. He did say incentives would remain for other resorts just not BLT. I'm thinking we will go ahead and write up the contract and hold off on closing until the new incentives come out. I'm dying to see if he was right. ;)

Now, that's actually very interesting!! I could *almost* see this. I mean, if BLT is selling like mad and if they've found that people are willing to pay a premium to be on the monorail, maybe...??

I hate to say it, but DH and I would have paid the full $112/point to buy into BLT. I would have griped and complained about it, but without BLT, we would have never bought into DVC. Of course, I'm glad that we were able to get our points at $96/point but, again, we would have paid the full price. This will be very interesting to monitor in the next couple months.

Crystal, I am with you about paying for BLT. I am only part of DVC now because they built BLT. We have been going to WDW since 1994 and never bought because we loved being at the Contemporary.

I am planning to do another add on at BLT this summer (waiting on the VWL contract I am selling to close which won't happen until after we get back from our August trip) but with the talk of new incentives June 15th, I might get the paperwork started the first week of June and then wait to see what happens with the new ones.

Like you, I was able to get the new incentives April 1st so it was a plus--but, I would have paid more if that was the only option!!!

Does this mean that by getting the paperwork started you lock yourself into the current incentives? If so, how long do you have to return the paperwork? Also, I would assume if a better incentive comes out they will let you redo the paperwork to reflect the better deal. Is that correct?

Yes, once you agree to a deal and get the ball rolling, you are locked in. If better incentives come out before you close the deal, you can ask them to redo the contracts.

Typically, it takes about a week after the phone call to get the contracts to sign. Then, you have 7 - 10 days to sign and return your papers to them. Once they receive the papers, it can take 1 - 2 weeks for closing to occur. AT least, this was my experience with my BLT add on. And, you can make reservations right away and if the contracts get switched, they just transfer everything over for you.

If the rumor is June 15th, then I will probably start something right before then to see what happens. My add on will only be for another 50 points and don't want to lose the current $8.00 off they are giving for small add ons.

Good luck!!!

That is absolutely correct. Also, something else to think about is that, if you are financing through Disney, you usually have 60 days to make your down payment. Typically, if the papers are all signed, Disney will close your contract as soon as they receive the full amount of the down payment. So, in theory, you could have as long as 60 days from the time you buy your points until the time that you close during which you can make any changes to your contract should better incentives come out.
