Thoughts?

I (thought I) learned years ago that the percentage of precipitation was concerning the coverage area, not amount of rain. For example, if there's a 20% chance of precipitation that means that 20% of the area will see precipitation.

As anyone that's been to this area once knows, it can be raining like cats and dogs and then you walk a mile and it's perfectly dry.

I'm not worried about the rain, but if it does have to rain, I'd much prefer a drizzle/shower than a downpour, if anyone who has control over that is listening.... ;) Good advice on the hat/visor though. Might need to pick one of these up, even if this race is the only one it gets used for.

From our friends at the NWS

"The probability of precipitation is the likelihood of measurable precipitation (0.01 inches or greater) for a specified forecast time period, and occurring at any point for which the forecast is valid."

I too had learned both ways. Today the science is a lot more solid and the percentage is a function of a model's output based on hundreds of weather inputs.

Anyway, the percentage is falling through today....

Anyone else getting nervous about the weather?:sad2:

After doing the half during marathon weekend in January, I'm not nervous about any weather conditions  except lightening, and in that case, the event would be cancelled. Now that would bum me :guilty:

To be honest, I am *way* more concerned about lovebugs than rain.

I didn't even think about it until you mentioned it. But my mom lives there. I checked with her. She said it was bad with lovebugs a couple days ago, but today there were none. So it's possible they are gone and we could be in the clear of them.

I lived down there for two years and they were never really that big of a problem. They last a couple of days and can be a pain when you are driving and hitting them at 60mph but I never had a problem with them out running.

Up here in Illinois, we don't have lovebugs. Do they bite? Or are there just a lot of them around? We've only been to WDW once in later October and never noticed any insects.

No, they don't bite. They have slightly hard exoskeletons and are slightly acidic. When you hit them with your car they are hard enough that you usually hear them and you have to wash your car relatively soon so they don't eat through your clear coat. If you are on a bike they can sting a bit from hitting them at a fast speed. Running it isn't any worse then hitting any other bug.

More love bug trivia….

They are so called love bugs because once they mate they are, well, hmmmm stuck. So they fly around mated.

They have an attraction for CO. Higher levels of CO can be found, where? Bueller? Bueller? That’s right, along roadways. You see very few in your yard except for the peak couple days.

There are two seasons, even though I do not seem to recall the May season. The other is now.

They are impossible to wash off your car. I have heard stories of people using sandpaper or other abrasives to remove them from bumpers. The acid can ruin a paint job – but so can an abrasive.

My DW and I ride a tandem. A few years back we were out during one of the peak days. As we come through the endless swam of bugs I start spitting and swearing. I look down and see several on my jersey. I stop and start to apologize to my DW for the bug mess she must be seeing. When I turn she is just sitting there wondering what I happening. I was the perfect bug block.

They generally do not bother a runner unless they are running along a busy street during the peak day. Even then it is just a nuisance.

I forgot about the sound.... sounds like sand/gravel pelting the car as you drive down the road.

There are love bugs EVERYWHERE down here right now. I was here last year at this time for Everest and I don't remember it being an issue at all, but this afternoon I was riding Dinowhirl with my nephew and it was a constant - we were picking them off each other, only for more to replace them. I don't mind bugs at all, but what a nuisance!

(I don't specifically think it will affect running the race though - just irritating)

I have an OT question... DH would like a Garmin run watch for his bday(a week after I return from wdw) and thought the $400 one is what he wants! I dont have a $400 budget but could probably swing $150.

Any recommendations on a model - I dint know much about them.

Thanks!

The Garmin Forerunner 305 runs around $145-170; the Gormin Forerunner 205 runs around $125-130. Both are available from known on-line retailers including amazon and walmart and best buy.

The difference between the two is that the 305 has a heart rate monitor. By far these are the better deals for Garmin GPS units. They will do everything the others will, except go under water. In many ways these are better than the newer, more expensive Garmins as the numbers are larger.
