Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

I just noticed you are from Richmond. Are you considering running the Suntrust Richmond Half? Does anyone have experience with this race?

I am thinking about doing that half, but have never before. If I do not do the half I am going to at least do the 8k that they offer the same day. I have heard good things about it before, but I have only lived in Richmond a few years now :goodvibes

Another newbie (probably) silly racing question??

About the water stations... How do they work? Is it a grab and go and throw your trash? Are there trash cans? Is there both water and electolyte drink?

And I run/walk (about a 14.5mpm) and don't want to slow anyone down..I'm thinking of taking either the inside or outside track in order to avoid having others annoyed by my run/walk routine. Is this a good plan? trying to not upset the masses.

Thanks!

A little bit frustrated - can someone give help or insight??

I wanted to sign up some friends for the running tracker so they could receive alerts on my progress and when I try to find me, I'm not found....

I even opened up the search by just typing my last initial in the last name field and scrolled down to my appropriate age and still nothing. I'm not in the relay either.

Is anyone else having difficulty finding themselves?? Or is it just me? Should I contact them? I'm almost wondering if Disney has DH and I put in the relay somehow. Wouldn't surprise me at this point to be honest.... Is there a way on the waiver to tell which event? I did sign up for the 1/2, I looked at my active.com receipt and signed up on June 28th so I know I would be in the data uploaded for the runner tracker..

Help!!
Do you HAVE a waiver to print? That is the most critical thing. Next, what is the bib number? If below 10,000 you are registered as a half runner and not a relay. From there, I would work it out at the expo. At this point in time the office is more focused on resolving ‘bigger’ issues; not specifically saying not being able to register for notices is not a big issue if you can’t do that. There will be plenty of Active Help at the expo (or traditionally is) to get your phone numbers registered.

Hi everyone! I have to admit that I've been reading through this thread for awhile and have found all the posts so helpful, and so I finally made an account today. I am Disney obsessed and am lucky enough to not live too far from WDW that I can visit at least once a year (or more ;) ). This is however, my first half marathon and am soooooo EXCITED!!! I just wanted to thank everyone on here for being supportive even though you don't even know me! Just a few more days...hope everyone has fun!!! :yay:

Welcome. It looks like a fun weekend ahead.

Race day courtesy with concern to water stops.

First listen as you approach, most Disney stations are water at the first section tables and PowerAde at the last half. Or maybe the other way; regardless, there will be someone barking out the order as well as those handing out cups. Avoid the first table or two as that is where most runners head. Especially in the 14-15 minute range you will find folks literally standing and waiting for cups to fill when the 4th table back is full of cups waiting for runners.

When taking water BE PREPARED to stop running. From about the 9:30 – 10:30 range the number of runners slowing to a walk in the stations starts to increase. In the 14:30 range most if not all will walk. Do not go to the table rather stay along the line of volunteers that they will serve you. Make eye contact with a volunteer then take the water from their hand. Keep moving. If your cup is stolen do not panic there are several others to select from.

If you plan to pass the station run in the center of the road to avoid the crowds around the tables. When you get your water move a little towards the center to get out of the exchange zone. The easiest way to take a cup of water while running is to grab the cup and pinch the cup closed on the side opposite you. Then fold the pinch. The side closest to you will form a small slit from which you can drink. That is without having the contents head up your nose. It is an acquired skill so in your first half, slow to a walk.

When you start to run look back and then slide to the middle of the course. You may have a fellow runner trying to dive in at the last minute.

Finally, it is in good form to toss the cup to the side of the road near the trash can. As you will have already moved from the edge of the course look before tossing to assure you are not going to hit the runner sliding up the side of the road. I usually try to hit the can but an empty cup will not aim that well. It is in not so good form to get too far past the station then throw the cup. You will see a trash can 50-75 feet past the end of the station, which is a good neighbor throw zone.

Do not stop to fill you bottle at the station. I see folks standing in the middle of everything filling bottles. If you are running with your own hydration stop and the very end of the table and ask. More than likely a volunteer with hand you a bottle to fill from rather than you grabbing up a bunch of cups.

Speaking of cups. Expect them to be a third to half full. That helps runners who run through the stop. It is acceptable to grab a couple cups of water if needed. Also, PowerAde is mixed about 50% strength (per label instructions). That will help you take in the drink with less chance of GI issues. However, expect at least one stop of be full strength. Dilute the cup with water if you get sport drink from that station.

Finally, this is the most important thing. Say Thank You.

With regard to run/walk

Before walking look around to make sure you are not getting in anyone’s way. In the early part of the race slide to the edge of the road before walking. Folks who only run Disney and TNT may be surprised but that is opposite the standard for slowing in a race. The universal old school place to slow in a race is course center. By being slow in the center of the course folks can go either way around you but on the course edge, well it is one way or off road. Regardless, be responsible and look around, raise a hand, yell slowing or any combination of the above to let others know you are changing speed. I would walk so that a runner can pass between you and the side of the road; not the very edge.

Hope this helps

ADDED - Oh, one wother thing... if your walk comes in the middle of a corner, run through the corner then take your walk...unless you are on the outter edge of the bend.

The two biggest rules to remember in a waterstop are the following:

1. Position yourself as you approach
2. Do not slow your pace in the stop. Grab and keep going at the same pace you have been maintaining.

What I mean for the first is if the waterstop is on the right of the road and you want water start to get over about 300 feet before the stop so you aren't cutting in front of someone at the last second. If you are skipping that stop get over to the left (or right in the middle if the stop is on both sides).

As for the second, there is nothing worse then being behind someone that slows their pace in a waterstop. If there is space in front of me I actually speed up just a bit to open a slight gap to the person behind me and make it easier for him to grab a cup. There really is no reason at all to slow to grab the cup. As you get experience you will also be able to stay at your pace and drink but that usually takes time. If you can't do it don't slow until you pass the stop and can get over to one side of the road or the other.

When you are done just drop the cup or throw it. I make sure to get enough distance to clear the course so I don't hit anyone who might be positioning to pass me.

Did my 10 mile run yesterday and was feeling great -- I really think I can do this race :thumbsup2

Thanks to everyone providing tips for us newbies!

I must have had a sprinkling of pixie dust hit me...my in-laws are now watching my kids again at my home! I don't know why they aren't going to my SILs anymore...all I know is that they'll be here and the kids won't be missing any school or activities! Yay!

Safe travels to all!

So glad it worked out for you! Now you don't have to worry and can just have fun.

Anyone else getting nervous about the weather?:sad2:

I'll be honest, I am. I'm not so much worried about the getting wet part. I will eventually dry :teeth: I'm more worried about the event being canceled and not being able to have my first half marathon at Disney and getting the medal..

Maybe a little bit-- although I'm running the 5K not the half, so I'll get wet for less time. ;) But on the bright side, maybe if it's raining it will keep some folks away from the early am 5K and it will be a less crowded course. I can hope anyway!

I think the weather would have to be really, really, really awful for them to cancel. Thousands of people have spent thousands of dollars and weeks if not months of training for this event. The only way they're going to cancel is to keep us safe.

I feel the same way.

If it does rain, I'll be there sans costume.

It's 64 degrees today in NYC (going up to 76), and steady rain. Seems like a safe bet that I'd be able to pre-create our race conditions tonight.

I'm in the pace group and a run/walker. Perhaps I'll see you for a good portion of the race.

Anyone else getting nervous about the weather?:sad2:

I'm obsessed with checking the weather, even though I know there is nothing I can do about it. I did the Everest Challenge last year in the horrible rain and I keep thinking if I have to do 13 miles in that I'll cry. But, my mom reminded me yesterday that at Disney it can be raining in MK and not an Epcot and so on, so they might say rain in Orlando, but perhaps we'll get the Disney dome hovering over us runners. MUST GET SHINY MEDAL!!!:goodvibes

Sounds good! I'll be wearing a light blue "princess skirt" from runningskirts.com Not sure what I'm wearing as a top yet..that's a work in progress :) I'll be the one running for 3 minutes then walking for 2min :)

BTW what's a "pace group?" :)

So excited for the race:cheer2:

OH NO!!!! :scared1:

You mean that if the weather conditions are so bad and they have to cancel the race, WE WON'T GET OUR MEDAL!!!!! :sad1: :sad1: :sad1:

pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: The race must go on!!!!!!!

I am in the "BRING IT" camp. Wet, dry, hot, cold, windy.... I am pretty certain that as long as a named tropical event is not threatening/occurring we can expect a race. The only cancellation criteria published is from a threat of lightning. Well and with this event an intensity clause.

Weather

The race will be held rain or shine. If there is lightning in the area, however, the race will either have a delayed start or depending on the intensity of the weather, be cancelled. The determination will be made by the Disney Sports Event staff.

The Walt Disney World® Resort Lightning Policy is as follows:

Event operations will shut down when lightning is 10 miles out from the event areas. Event operations will not resume until the lightning is 10 miles out moving away from the event areas. Event Management will determine this using the *Flash to Bang Rule* and weather radar. Event Management will consult with the Theme Parks, Resort Partners, and Walt Disney World Security on a course of action: to utilize the operational rain plan, delay the event, or cancel the event.

Flash to Bang Rule is applied by measuring the time (in seconds) between a visual lightning “Flash” and hearing the resulting “Bang”. This time is then divided by a factor of “5” to obtain distance in miles. For example, 50 seconds between “Flash” and “Bang” divided by “5” equals 10 miles. (As a reminder, the registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable.)

Just make sure that you are ready for a 2+ hour wait in the elements. Trash bags, rain panchos and good humor will help get you started.
