Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

Right now, weather.com has high of 86 low of 70, and 20% chance of rain for Saturday. I am kind of liking it.

Need a little advice..

The last few runs I have been struggling - badly!! I used to be able to do 60 min of solid running / jogging.. My goal was to run / jog the first 6 miles and do a walk / run combo after that.

Well lately I can hardly go a mile without gasping for air. I mean I have to stop and walk to catch my breath because I can't hold a conversation. I am still going about 3.4 miles in 35 minutes so I am still in pace but obviously I am concerned because I have to go 4x that far.

I wanted to get 6 miles done on Wednesday before I leave (did 3.4 today) but I'm just not sure now.

Any advice on why all of a sudden I can't seem to go 2 miles without walking when not even 2 weeks ago I could go 6??

I have a question - is there really a POINT to the trash bag/poncho, once we're running, or should I discard it in the corral, if it's raining?

Already bought a second set of emergency ponchos to bring with in case it's raining while we wait. Also am bringing an old long sleeve shirt to wear over my running tank. Figure I can wear it to stay warm pre-race and then toss it.

Sounds good! I'll be wearing a light blue "princess skirt" from runningskirts.com Not sure what I'm wearing as a top yet..that's a work in progress :) I'll be the one running for 3 minutes then walking for 2min :)

BTW what's a "pace group?" :)

So excited for the race:cheer2:

I define pace group as a group of people who run a similar pace in the race. Maybe somewhere it's an official term and has another meaning, but I have no idea. Love the running skirt. I'll be on the lookout. I'll be wearing shorts and a top but basic colors (haven't picked out yet either), but i'll be wearing a rainbow colored band on my head (either peace signs or flowers). Unless it rains, then I'll be wearing a hat. I'm a 1:1 run/walker. But maybe we'll have a minute here, a minute there to say hello.

Coach - almost forgot trash bags. Thanks for adding that to my list!!!

Listening to Wishes right now at work. Can't wait for vacation!

Is the weather different?

It could just be a weird mental block. I get those, and have to distract myself out of them.

You also might want to check if you're coming down with something. I was having some breathing issues running last week, and it turns out I have an upper respiratory infection, which I'm taking medication for right now.

Why not take Wednesday OFF. Then run a light 15-20 minutes Friday Morning and call it good.

I see folks trying to run in these things. Best to toss – outside the corral – just as the gun goes off or slightly before.

Note sure that a long sleeved shirt will be needed in 75 ish weather. Obviously you know you better than anyone else. I am bringing one for post race.

It's probably a combo of everything hitting me all at once - or at least I hope. Both my boys have colds (stuffy / runny noses and sneezing) and the mental block too. The weather has become a little cooler but I notice I am getting hotter more quickly than in the past. I'm really hoping that at the race I'll be able to push through it...

So should I not do anything the rest of the week until Friday?

For the half this past January, I kept my rain pancho on the whole time. Of course, the temp was around the freezing mark so that made a difference. :teeth:

The only thing I worry about is my feet getting wet. I get blisters very easily and with wet shoes, it's a given I'll get them. I've tried putting duct tape over the mesh on my shoes but it doesn't stick in wet weather.

Any suggestions on how I can keep my feet somewhat dry should it rain? I haven't had too much experience running/walking in the rain and the few times I did, I got blisters. :(

I am a big believer in keeping things really simple. You have had an issue with your run(s) and if Wednesday goes badly you will only have a negative reinforcement of the last run. By taking the week off until Friday you are allowing the body time to recover from anything that may be affecting you and putting distance between you and your last run. Nothing complicated here. Normally, I would say go for the run. But honestly, you have the distance and all you need is the adrenaline rush of the race to get you going again.

Actually keeping the poncho on the entire race helps to get your feet wet. Seriously, as the water drips from the garment it must go somewhere.

It sounds as though you know where the blisters are going to occur so I would lube those areas well. If raining, use Vaseline and not runner’s lube as runners lube is water based. Make sure your socks are not cotton socks and are well fitting. There is a theory that doubling socks will help. I find that for me this actually creates blisters. The theory is that the outer sock sticks to the shoe and the inner sock sticks to the foot and any rubbing is between socks.

I also retighten the laces across the forefoot, arch and upper end of the shoes on a rainy day. With time shoes do loosen and this is a good practice anyway on occasion. The next is a little strange but bring your race shoes and socks in a plastic bag. Wear old shoes to the start and for the wait. Once race time approaches discard the old wet shoes and put the new dry socks and shoes on. At least you are starting out in dry shoes.

Duct taping the uppers is a great wind block and makes a lot of sense on a really cold morning while waiting for the start. Keeping the tape on after you start running does not. The feet sweat and the duct tape will create wet feet.

Finally, once in the race run just off the lane marker lines. The way Orange County paves the road surfaces the lane line is a small low spot running the direction of the road. It will collect just a little water. It also has the lane reflector bumps and lane lines. Run to the road center of that line to avoid puddles. Also, when wet the lane line paint can be slick – really slick. The reflective material beads water and becomes slick. In the 10 half many folks were complaining about icing on the road…. It was water on the paint that created the slick.

In the parks you are on your own. Run center path in AK as the paths do have curbs that will retain water. In DHS ponding is not as bad.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Remember, 20-30% chance of rain = 70-80% chance of dry

I'm confused about someone's comment upthread about checking your chip... since we're using ChronoTrack Dtags, there's no need to check it.

A bottle of water – hydration is the most critical thing the few days before the race.

Thanks for all your great advice! I need to remember that one in particular. I usually drink water, but because it's so expensive in WDW I often drink less. I'll be sure not to on Thur and Fri.

Great advice! Thanks! Where exactly on the front do you wear the bib?

Me personally, I pin it to the stomach area of my shirt. I find it less cumbersome.

Anyone else getting nervous about the weather?:sad2:

I don't mind running in the rain, I am just worried about my iPhone!

I think the weather would have to be really, really, really awful for them to cancel. Thousands of people have spent thousands of dollars and weeks if not months of training for this event. The only way they're going to cancel is to keep us safe.

I ran the Expedition Everest Challenge last year, and it poured. Poured! They announced that they would only cancel it if the lightning came within a certain amount of miles of our area. Since it didn't, they had no problem letting us run in the monsoon, or crawl in the puddles and mud during the obstacle course! :rotfl:

One other quick rainy run thought.....

Were a visor or billed hat. Rain pelting your face can discourage you quickly. The bill will help keep the direct rain off your face.

am I the crazy one..

I checked Yahoo weather and I don't see rain in the forecast for Saturday or Sunday.

Yes you are the crazy one. No one uses Yahoo weather. :confused3 Just kidding...

I honestly think that the chance of rain depends on how the next front pushes through the country and what happens in the Caribbean
