Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

I'm probably having the meatloaf and mashed potatoes at the Prime Time Cafe...LOL! I think I have a 3:00 ressie. My staple when I go there - may also do the chicken noodle soup if I feel froggy. Then will probably do a protein bar while on the bus.

My favorite there as well! And yeah I have to remember to bring a protein bar. Thanks!

Maybe Coach could say something about post-race nutrition. I'm pretty sure that getting a meal in sometime in the 2 hours after you finish a race is VERY important.

Something more than the post-race snacks they give you (like bananas and powerade)? The last "long" night race I did was the ToT13k in '08, and come to think of it I did have an actual meal after the race, but it was a lot earlier than it will be by the time I finish this race!

Hey Coach or anyone else!

Would it be okay to sub a 5K race for my 8-9 mile long run this weekend? Last week I ran 13 miles and plan to do about 8 miles next weekend.

As far as race day food, I plan to eat pretty much like I normally do. Split an omelette and wheat toast for breakfast; lunch probably at Hurricane Hannah's; and either ham or turkey on a roll in our room between 5-6. Will try to stay hydrated throughout the day with water and Crystal Lite. I'm going to take some GU chomps with me to the race.

I'm not the coach, but if you've already got your 13 miler in, you're WAY good. Do the 5k if you'd rather.

Sure, science suggests that one should consume a small post-run recovery meal within 15-30 minutes post run to help kick start the recovery process. Many of us have no desire to eat anything after a hard run. In real simple terms their bodies have shunted blood away from their GI tracts and it may take a while before the body achieves a normal state. But I do find that many folks can drink. That is why you see and read about chocolate milk being a great recovery drink (meal). Note it does not have to be chocolate. You are looking to get 200+ Kcal (after a half) into the system with a 4 carb to 1 protein ratio. The carbs create an insulin spike that helps to get the protein into the blood without having to go through the normal digestive system process (liver, etc). The reason for getting the protein into the blood and muscle is that the muscles are still looking for nourishment even though you have quit working them. If you can get the protein into the muscle cell they start reknitting hthe fibers destroyed by the workout (making a stronger muscle). If you do not have sufficient protein levels in the blood and into the muscle then the muscle; still hungry, finds proteins for nourishment from a more local location. That being the muscle itself. You simply cannibalize part of the strength results achievable from the workout/race.

Look for some place in Epcot with C Milk or just milk or bring along a bottle of ensure or a recovery bar.

It definitely is important! (so says all of my running books and Runner's World magazines anyways :) ). I plan on eating something when I return to the room not necessarily at the after party (which I don't plan at being for hours, maybe 30 minutes to an hour). After I did my 11 and 12 mile runs I would eat banana's and peanut butter and many other different things recommended it just never sits well in my stomach no matter how "light" it is or that it works for other people (chocolate milk I can sometimes tolerate) and I feel completely fine eating later (not like 8-10 hours later) so that's just what I do and it works for my body.

Agreed! Have fun this weekend. But remember to get the 6-8-miler in next weekend.

I am running a 10k instead of my long run this weekend myself.

Hi everyone!
I have been without a laptop ..errr..HP!

ANyway..looks like everyone is just abt ready!
I wanted to thank the Coach for your advice weeks ago abt the personal trainer! He turned out to be a dud, and stood me up for our 2nd session!!! I knew after the first I was not impressed, so he actually did me a favor.
THe gym placed me with an awesome trainer...have had 2 sessions...will have a few more before departure day in 2 weeks.

I learned I was in the wrong shoes.. ( now that I know I am flat footed with a minimal arch and I still am a under pronator) my new pair of Brooks have made the world of difference! .my IT Band needs way loosening up...learned abt fascia rubbing...body mechanics...
I have done intervl training as far as speeds, endurance..my pace has improved...he did spend 2 1/2 hrs with me our first session.
So Coach Charles...many thanks for telling me what a real Personal Trainer would do....it was helpful to me!

Doing a 9-10 miler tomorrow....last week I did a 7 miler (walking..I am a walker:) ) at a pace of 13:30..and I wasnt on the TM! lol
But tomorrow I am going to keep it at a pace of around 14:30-15....Am going to try GU tomorrow for the first time...
And, I WAS planning on a few glass of wine THurs and Fri...but Bruce the Trainer said no alcohol til after the race! :( lol

Gee, I really want to say thank you for the feedback and glad that you have found a great trainer. Unfortunately, there are way too many in the profession who are either out of touch with their client or just too dis-interested in their client goals. I am so glad that I could be of some help.

And yes, no alcohol!

I have a 1/2 this weekend...last night I couldn't get motivated to do 3! I turned back home!

You are ready. Have a great race

Does anyone have any ideas about when we might be getting our waivers? DH and I are leaving on Thursday as we are taking a short cruise prior to arriving at WDW on the 30th. We'd really like to have them before we leave so we don't have to hunt for a printer on property.

Big news: I officially have crazy nerves about Philly RnR on Sunday. I am SO glad I'm getting my first half out of the way this weekend, so I can enjoy myself in Orlando in 13 days!!!

I'm going to guess it won't be until the week of the 27th but it might be a bit earlier. Are you staying on property? I know the business center in the Dolphin has a printer so you can head over there on your Epcot or DHS day.

I did that half last year when it was still the Philadelphia Distance Classic and it is a really nice course. It is flat and once you get along the river it is really nice and peaceful. It is a good run to be your first. Good luck.

It's called Taper Madness. Take a bottle of water today and then run well over the weekend
