Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

I've never done a race so i'm not sure how the buses work. I think i'll look into changing to POR/FQ though. I'd hate to be late because I couldn't get on a bus at another hotel...

I have only done the January event and they didn't check to see if you were staying at a host hotel, so they would never know. I would be interested to hear what the runners who did the Princess encountered. The January event provides transportation from all resorts so resort hopping to catch a bus isn't really an issue. I am pretty sure the Princess also only has select host hotels that provide busing so did those of you who did the Princess event have to show ID or any kind of pass?

I'm concerned about bussing. I had POFQ at race rate, but switched to POR with a 40% pin. When I canceled, the sports reservation people weren't aware that POR was added as a host hotel and they told me I would only be allowed to use the bus if I had booked through them. I pushed a bit harder and told her I'd done Minnie, TOT and Goofy and no bus vouchers were ever issued. Opinions? Should I be concerned about not being permitted on a bus?

I was worried about that also as I am staying at BWV and wanted to use the transportation from BCV. So I emailed the Disney Sports People again. There reply is on topand my original questions below.

I like the moonwalking smiley, but I don't think he can keep up a 16 minute pace that way.

Mike-

If I am staying at boardwalk can I use the transportation to the start from Beach Club?

Is there disney transportation to the expo to pick up race packets friday or saturday AM?

Thanks,

Mike Finch

I just noticed they added several host resorts inculding the other All-Stars and POR. We were booked at ASSp with free dining, but decided to upgrade to POR and go with the full free dining. So excited!

Also, dh and I both completed our first 3 milers today. We have been building up for a while, so it was exciting to get there.

Can I just say that I love that you folks keep me so well-connected on the race info?!?!?!?

I saw Kristy (hipporina)'s post about the added hotels and just switched my discounted ressie to All Star Music (our family's sentimental favorite).

Thanks!

Another question that I wonder if you could help me with... Does anyone know if it's possible to run BOTH as a relay participant and a half marathoner? I signed up for the half initially, but now my son wants to join me and do the relay. Anyone had any reason to ask that question?

I'm not sure about both, but my sister was signed up for the half and when I decided to go she checked into getting changed into a relay team. Since the relay was 50% full they let her switch. She paid the relay fee, emailed the confirmation numbers to the CM who was helping her, and her money was refunded for the half-marathon. I think it's worth sending an email to see if you can do both.

Yay...I forgot that Wendy will be joining us. About doing both races.....I would think that as long as you wore BOTH chips, you could probably get away with it in terms of getting both results posted. I think I read somewhere that the relay will have a velcro type chip band that you just hand off. I also doubt you'd be able to get both medals at the finish. My question is, assuming you can switch to the relay, why would you want to do both? I'll have 5 teams doing the relay....we'd we thrilled to keep an eye on Angus since no one is partying until all the team members are in. This is turning into the competition of the century for my family....and I'm the only one not training! (the 3 weddings have me wiped out!) Can't wait to see you both!

We changed resorts (for the fifth time!), and now will be saving our pennies to stay at BWI. =) The thought of taking the bus back and forth from POR to the parks was too much for me.

Does it help to submit a time if you plan to finish under 2:45? I'm hoping if I do the 1/2 to run around 2:15, maybe faster if SIL do the relay. I have a 10k time, do they just take that pace and multiply it by 13 to get your 1/2 pace? Not really sure how all that works... TIA!

In theory, your 10k time should be about half your HM time, not 1/13, right?

Well I figured since it's a little less than half they might just take the pace per mile and use that instead. I have no idea how they do the coral placements, and don't know if it is beneficial to submit proof of time really...

There is a formula that can be used to predict you time in one distance based on the time in another distance. Runner's World has a version of it here.

I don't know if Disney Sports will use the same exact formula but it will probably be pretty close.

How big are the waves of people usually for a disney half marathon? I completed a 10k this year where almost 40,000 people ran and there were about 40 waves that started a few minutes apart with about 1,000 people in each....it was pretty crazy - but very fun :goodvibes I just wasnt sure how big the disney races get and such :rotfl: so excited

There are more people in each corral in Disney races. For the Princess this year, there were 5 corrals for 12,000+ runners. Each corral was a wave. I think that might be comperable for the the W&D half.

Can you definitely sign up for the half, then switch to the relay later if there is still room? I know the races are only 60% right now, but I'm nervous I won't get a decision from possible relay partner and end up not getting to run at all... I would feel better if I was signed up for something instead of nothing...

I am now officially signed up!!

I am excited after doing the WDW 1/2 earlier this year. This seems like it will be a very different experience and I'm really looking forward to it. I haven't been to WDW for Food and Wine in quite a few years so that is a bonus too.

I typically run 2-3 miles three times a week but have to get those long Sunday runs in again like I did when I trained for January.

Now, let the training begin....

It looks like Disney is finally getting serious about planning this race - they've made some changes to the relay. The website now has the runner breakdown as follows:

Runner 1 - 4.8 miles
Runner 2 - 8.3 miles

I looked through the pages, and I didn't see a posting for the Food and Wine 1/2. (So, if there is one, someone please direct me to it!)

Anyway, I would love to do this race, as a relay, but, I don't have a partner! Anyone looking for a partner? As of right now I run around an 11-12 min. mile. I am running my first 5k in a little over a week, and I am going to be training for a 1/2 for November.

I will be arriving the day of the race, but since it isn't until 10pm, I figure I have time to get the family all settled in, and then run the race. Let me know if you are interested!

I believe that Disney will hold you to the no transfer policy. It is worth a phone call if you want to know the exact answer. I think it less likely once the race gets closer to capacity You are far enough out that you can make the half with NO ISSUE. Look at it this way if you are the 8 mile anchor person and run 8 miles in training you can easily run the half from that training base. Based on historic fill rates you should be OK up to the point where the race is nearing 90%. Be ready to launch if the capacity jumps quickly.

In my opinion, yes it is worth the effort of providing proof. Think of how much energy you will save if you can avoid 2 miles of zigging. The first corral with 2:45 runners will have all speeds in that corral. You could be behind the first non-proofed corral if you have not already enetered so that would be an additional 2500 zigs and zags. The good news on this course is that you will have a sort straight on Victory Drive followed by a 3 mile stretch on Osceola. That will take a lot of the bunching out of the inital race - hopefully. For the record a 'well trained' runner will run a 2:15 half with a 60 minute 10k.

I wonder if Disney anticipates the amount of people planning on using bus transportation from host resorts that aren't actually staying there :scratchin. That's my only concern about leaving my car at Epcot and taking the monorail to the TTC and going over to the Poly and taking the bus. I'd hate to go through that and there's a HUGE line of people waiting for like 1 bus to make the trip around.

Because I'm a worry wart and I really like the walk down the canal to DHS I'll probably follow Frank's advice :).

I've never checked a bag before at a race. Do any of you recommend checking a bag? Is it a pain getting it at Disney races? What kind of things do you put in there?

First, the official answer is that you cannot hop into a resort. But look at the practicable side of the issue. You will be wearing running gear with a bib and no real wallet, purse, etc. All the driver and ground assistant are worried about is pulling up safetly, loading quickly - with as few hastles as possible - and pulling out for a safe drive to the start. They will not be checking room keys, etc. If you are worried, put a $20 in your shorts pocket and that would cover cab fare to the start.

As far as baggage, Disney seems to have their act in order. Note that you must use their bag provided at the expo. I will check a bag and will have dry shorts, shirt, socks and shoes in the bag for the post race party. I will also have a small container of recovery drink. Since it will be warm you do not need to worry about pre-race comfort... but I will have a trash bag (rain pancoo) in the bottom of the bag. Many folks will have a more torough list but I am a minimalist for the most part. I will task my DW with bringing a light jacket if it looks like the weather will be cool.

There is water and the normal post race grub like bananas. Of course this is a different kind of race having the food samples afterwords but they really should still have something for the runners to grab and eat quickly before we cool down and can enjoy the actual post race party.

I would park at Epcot. You can take the bus from Epcot to DHS since they will have a bus from DHS to the start. If you have a parkhopper that you already used that day you could also park at Epcot and walk through the park, around the boardwalk, and along the canal to DHS. It would be a good warm up especially if you jogged around the lake to the DHS parking lot.

For the race I am not sure this works. It will for the expo but the DS/ESPN bus will not run as late as the start...and would more than likely be pre-empted by the event. If you are planning on parking at EPCOT you should monorail to the poly or walk to the Beach Club.

Just my thoughts.

ps...

Actually I just found this bit of news... It's going to change some of my plans over the weekend....YIKES!

ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex:Starting 2/21/2010, Disney will provide transportation from Disney's All Start Resorts and Caribbean Beach to the Sports Complex. The former bus route from Disney's Hollywood Studios to the Sports Complex will be discontinued.
