In Training: Marathon Weekend 2015 (Dopey Challenge)! **COMPLETE**

Oh goodness. I'm laughing... from empathy! You sound soooo pitiful with your box of crackers. Last year I did the same thing at Wine and Dine after party and had a HORRIBLE next day at the Studios. This year I behaved and Sunday was much much better.

Love your trip report. This race was simultaneously the most miserable yet fantastic run of my year! Thanks for sharing. :)

I think we've all said that before!
Ugh, too true!!
I know people make jokes about turning 30, but I swear a switched flipped when I did and I cannot stay up late or handle my alcohol anymore. I actually like going in Jan since the parks close so early!
I have heard similar jokes...and I'm really starting to think there's something to it. :scratchin I really did not set myself up well by not eating food or drinking water though...

Seriously, will NOT be happening in January (or hopefully ever again)!!
Thanks for posting this recap! I saw a lot of people complaining about how cold and wet it was during the half and it made me really nervous since I want to do this race next year. I'm glad you and your friends were able to still finish the race and have a good time of it.
I mean, I'm not gonna lie...the atmosphere was really, really different compared to last year. In my case, I think the fact that I had run in the rain before helped, and I was also expecting zero entertainment on the course, just because I know they don't generally put characters out in the rain. So any character I cam across was sort of a pleasant surprise.

In general I think it's just sort of been an unusual few weeks for runDisney races weather-wise...Tower of Terror had unexpectedly cool temperatures. Wine & Dine had the rain. Avengers had the crazy wind. You just never know! But I definitely would not let weather concerns scare you away from doing the race. :)
Also, your pictures of the Osbourne Lights look amazing! That is so cool that you got to run under such a beautiful display!
Yes!! My favorite part of any Disney race course. I love the Osborne lights so much. :lovestruc
We've only ever stayed at Pop and it's worked well for us since we don't spend that much time in the room, but I've been lusting after the Contemporary for a while for the convenience--between being able to walk to MK or just jumping on the monorail to get around sounds so much better than taking a bus. Free upgrade to concierge sounds amazing, what an awesome deal!
I was pleasantly surprised by Pop! I feel like I didn't 100% get a feel for the place just because I was only there for 1 night and never used their bus system...but it was certainly better than I expected. :)

We did that walk to/from MK the first night of the trip after eating at Contempo Cafe...that was pretty awesome.
I never realized that that was their policy. That's terrible! I understand they don't want to be responsible for someone missing their flight, but who wants to spend that extra time in an airport when they could get dinner or spend more time in the parks?
I agree! I mean, with the way I felt I was just looking to sleep for a bit - so no meal or park time for me - but I was hoping to get more like a 6:30 DME bus instead of the 4:30. :confused3 I can sort of understand it from their angle because if they did move my DME to 6:30, and then it turned out my flight actually DID take off on time (at 7:40) then I would miss my flight. So I think it's their way of being extra-cautious. Good to know for the future!
Oh goodness. I'm laughing... from empathy! You sound soooo pitiful with your box of crackers. Last year I did the same thing at Wine and Dine after party and had a HORRIBLE next day at the Studios. This year I behaved and Sunday was much much better.
Pitiful is the absolute perfect word to describe it! :crazy2: It was so funny because we approached the PeopleMover and I was like, "I'll just meet you guys out here when you're done." And one of them goes, "You can't even ride the PEOPLEMOVER?!" :rotfl2: I can laugh at it now, but at the time it was not so funny!

I'm glad I'm not the only adult that has done this...I really was hesitant to post about it, just because I was so freaking embarrassed (not that I posted 100% of the details here...but enough to get the gist). My husband tells me I have been beating myself up too much, but I'm starting to chill out about it more. :) It was a very uncomfortable, painful lesson learned, that's for sure.
Love your trip report. This race was simultaneously the most miserable yet fantastic run of my year! Thanks for sharing. :)
I could not agree more! Thanks for reading. :goodvibes

Week 1 of Dopey Challenge Training
Monday, November 10, 2014 - Sunday, November 16, 2014

21.55 miles completed
21.55 miles completed in Dopey Challenge training so far
668.16 miles completed in 2014 so far

Monday, November 10: Travel home from WDW

Rough day, mostly thanks to bad choices by me on Sunday...read about it here - and laugh at me (go ahead, it's okay)! - here.

Tuesday, November 11: 4-mile run planned, unscheduled rest day taken

Today was supposed to be my first day back to work after the trip, but after my flight was delayed I didn't get home until almost 2AM. :faint: That is just not enough sleep for a work day, so I took an extra day off. Mostly I spent this day sleeping and unpacking. I feel pretty off - sleep is messed up, stomach is a little wonky and I think I may have a little cold (coughing and runny nose). So I didn't run today. Boo!

I'm not the only one still struggling - one of my friends has a baaaad cold, the other has an ear infection. The 4th is fine - she must have a super immune system. She's also the youngest of us 4, so she has that going for her, too...

Wednesday, November 12: Rest Day

I actually did go back to work today! Gold star for me!

I hate that panicky moment, opening MS Outlook for the first time to check the inbox after being out of the office... I had about 60 emails, luckily only 10 or so need my attention. I still don't feel great, but I'm better than yesterday. :thumbsup2

Thursday, November 13: 3-mile run planned, unscheduled rest day taken

**WW UPDATE**

Today's weigh-in was surprising, and at the same time, not surprising. I didn't weigh in last week since I was in WDW, but today I was 2.2 pounds down from where I was 2 weeks ago. I feel like I should be way more excited about this than I am, but I can't help but think it's temporary since I didn't eat much during the trip and had my - ahem - food poison-like episodes, for lack of a better term. I have to think a little bit of it is dehydration as well. I'm fully expecting next week's weigh-in to be a gain, as a result.

It is still a milestone though - I'm officially NOT overweight for my height by a whopping 0.4 pounds, and I'm in a new "number family." Hopefully I can keep it up. And I'm pretty sure it's the first time I've returned home from a Disney trip weighing less than what I did when the trip began. Considering the circumstances around it, though, not something I want to repeat!

Anyway...I'm starting to feel more like myself again, but I did skip my run this morning. I'm hoping to get back to it tomorrow and get my long run in on Saturday. The weather may complicate things though - we're supposed to get snow today!

Friday, November 13: 2.3-mile treadmill run completed

Sure enough, we did get snow last night - it seriously looks like almost 6 inches! Nothing is plowed, and this snow came on so suddenly that it covered sidewalks that I know have leaves and whatnot buried under the snow that hadn't gotten picked up yet...that's just asking for another ankle rolling. So I headed to the treadmill thinking I'd get today's scheduled 7-mile run in.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA :rotfl2:

I made it 2.3 miles before calling it quits. Stupid freaking treadmill! It's just so mental with me...I tried to pump myself up for this run but once I started thinking that maybe I didn't want to do it anymore, that was it - I was just done.

I'm starting to panic a little bit about Dopey training. When training for Goofy 2013 I had this amazing training cycle where I missed 1 run - 1 run over the course of 4 months! This year, I've already missed 3 weeks due to injury, and now part of this week after travel/sick weirdness. I think I just need to accept that this year won't be like training in 2012/2013 and try to do the best I can with the time I have left.

So with that in mind, I'm going to try 7 miles tomorrow and 15 on Sunday. If I can do that, it should help boost my confidence a LOT.

Saturday, November 14: 7-mile out-and-back
Weather: 32 degrees, sunny with wind

Time to break out the running tights...apparently it's winter in Ohio. (Probably shouldn't cry too much, the tears will freeze on my face!)

But I got my run in! Yay.

I think the thing I hate the most about winter running is running in the street. The sidewalks here are still covered in snow, ice and whatever is buried under the snow and ice, but the roads are pretty well-plowed...so into the street I go. I've read that you’re supposed to run AGAINST traffic, so that's what I do. It's not fun. I get dirty looks, I've gotten an old lady - ahem - "gesturing" at me, and today a Jeep that was going by me picked the exact moment when he was the closest to me to rev his engine really, really loudly. I about had a heart attack. Coincidence? Maybe, but probably not.

For the duration of training I think I'm going to stick to running 4 minutes/walking 1 minute. So today I did 7 miles at a 11:24 pace. Not bad!

I'm mostly starting to feel like myself again, just coughing a little bit. But better than I was earlier this week!

Sunday, November 15: 15-mile run planned, 12.25-mile run completed
Weather: 34 degrees and overcast

Not exactly what I was looking for from this run, but I'll take it.

In anticipating this run last night I think I put WAY too much pressure on myself. :guilty: Somehow I turned it into this big indicator of whether I'll actually be able to pull off Dopey in January. Mentally I just think I did myself in before the run even began.

Just like yesterday, I was running in the street again. I don't think there was as much traffic, but one guy flew around a corner, saw me and proceeded to lay on his horn to honk very, very loudly. Apparently he didn't like that I was in the street. :confused3 What fun.

Anyway, like I said, this run was a struggle before it even began. I was just SO not into it, and eventually I decided I wanted to quit at 12 miles. I wasn't quite home at 12, and by the time I did get home it was 12.25. I was just relieved to be done.

My pace was VERY slow on this one - 11:49/mile. I think it was less a physical thing and more a mental thing...I hope. And I hope next week is better! I'm trying not to beat myself up about it too much though...between the JJ5K and Wine & Dine I did 16.2 miles last Saturday, so it's not like I'm not in good shape or whatever. I feel like I need to really work on getting my head back into it.

And with that, I am caught up after Wine & Dine! Woohoo!!

I have to laugh about freaking out over 60 unread emails on being out of the office for a few days. Today - I went to a 30 minute meeting & returned with 18 unread urgent emails. What I would give to only have 60 to deal with upon return from a trip or not have to check the emails during a vacation.

I think you are mentally causing your issues as well. I do it too so I get it. You will complete the Dopey - maybe not as fast as you would like but I have 0 doubt that you won't finish.

Oops, good point! 60 emails seemed like a decent amount to me, but at least I could totally tune out from work while I was away.

Thanks. :goodvibes Very nice of you to say that. I hope you are right!

DOONEY

My awesome friend tipped me off to the fact that the WDW Marathon Weekend Dooneys are up for pre-order!!! I love the pattern, of course, so I ordered myself a letter carrier that I don't need.

Ooh! Cute! I might have to go for that Lexi Crossbody! I kinda want to see them in person though. I'm kinda picky about pattern placement on my bags. Thanks for sharing the pics!

I totally get that! :thumbsup2 I'm the same way.

In 2013, I pre-ordered the Marathon Weekend Dooney too. When I went to pick it up, they directed me to the Playstation Pavilion (if I recall correctly), and when I went in there the ladies that were running pick-up brought out 4-5 bags for me to look at, so that I could choose the placement I liked best! I lucked out with the timing because I remember it was maybe me and one other person in there picking up bags, and I was able to take my time.

I'm hoping that this is what they do again. I'm not sure whether they will be available to purchase for people that don't pre-order. You may want to call and ask. :confused3

Oh! That's nice that they give you a choice of bags! I was envisioning them just handing you one, and that's the one you get! Lol!

Yeah, I hope they do it like that this year!! That would be nice! :thumbsup2

Week 2 of Dopey Challenge Training
Monday, November 17, 2014 - Sunday, November 23, 2014

32 miles completed
53.55 miles completed in Dopey Challenge training so far
700.16 miles completed in 2014 so far

Monday, November 17: 60-minute Core class planned, unscheduled rest day taken

Despite the fact that I ran 12.25 miles yesterday, I could NOT fall asleep last night. :confused3 I was expecting this fantastic night of sleep and it just didn't happen. And my hamstrings are talking to me this morning. So no Core today. :( Some day I'll get back to it...some day.

Tuesday, November 18: Run #1 (4 miles on the treadmill)

GREAT run today! Man did I need it!

I don't know what it was, exactly - maybe just that I'm feeling like myself again, or that this run felt decent, or that since I was on a treadmill and didn't have to worry about drivers honking at me and giving me dirty looks like my last 2 runs, but I am in SUCH a better mood now. During the run I played with intervals a bit (miles 1 and 3 were run 4:00/walk 1:00, miles 2 and 4 were run 5:00/walk 1:00), and I liked that okay. Total time for the run was 44:22, 11:06/mile pace. YAY! Hopefully this is the beginning of my settling back into my training schedule. After the run I did two 30-second planks.

Also, Ohio has decided that, for now, it is really, seriously winter. Right now it's 18 degrees out but feels like -2!! The weather forecast says it'll warm up on Saturday into the 40s and it'll be in the 50s by the beginning of next week...man I hope that is true!

Wednesday, November 19: Rest Day

Hooray for sleeping in! It's still very cold here, though, and it's supposed to snow more today - BOOO!!

Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend update: This is something that happened a couple of weeks ago and I forgot to mention it...about a month ago I mentioned that I submitted a point rental request for a studio at the Grand Californian. I also said that we had a back-up room booked at Paradise Pier, because we were all very sure that the point rental would not come through. Turns out we were right - I got an email on November 2 that studios are BOOKED for that weekend! So my deposit was refunded and it looks like our home for the race weekend will be Paradise Pier! I'd be lying if I said I wasn’t a teeny bit disappointed, but I knew from the beginning how unlikely it would be to actually get a studio...there's nothing more we could have done (beyond paid for it in cash - no thank you!). I’m sure we will LOVE Paradise Pier though! :)

In other news, last night my brother and I signed up for Cleveland's Turkey Trot! We'll be covering 5 miles on Thanksgiving morning. Looking forward to it! It'll my my second time running this race (first time was in 2012), first time for the bro. :)

One thing I forgot to mention earlier is that this weekend I reserved some Fastpass+ for January! The window actually came available while I was in WDW for Wine & Dine, but I was way too busy (mostly) having fun to make FP+ reservations! I'm happy with what I did get - the only thing I wanted that was not available was an Anna & Elsa meet & greet FP+. SHOCKER!! (/sarcasm). I'm a little bummed about that but if I don't see them in January I'm sure I will on a cruise in 2015. :)

Then today I logged into My Disney Experience and was floored to see my trip countdown at 49 days…!!! :faint: Somehow I missed this countdown when I was doing FP+ stuff over the weekend, but there it is. Ever since I have been back from Wine & Dine I have been thinking, "Marathon Weekend is less than 2 months away," so obviously I know the trip is approaching...but somehow seeing it written as "49 days" makes is seem a lot closer than "less than 2 months." If that makes any sense. Online check-in was available, of course (should have known since I was able to select some FP+ over the weekend) so I did that.

It's just weird...I think because I was so focused on Wine & Dine, it makes it seem like I don't have time to get ready for Dopey. Which is dumb because everything I have been doing all year has been leading up to it - even though my "official" Dopey training is only 9 weeks long, I have spent this year running more consistently and getting stronger. I have to think that this (hopefully good) fitness base I have been building is going to help get me through the weekend. And of course I still have those now 7.5 weeks left to get the runs in. Can't believe it’s only 4.5 weeks until taper starts!

Thursday, November 20: Run #2 (4-mile treadmill run)

**WW UPDATE**

Well, as predicted, I did gain back some of the weight I lost last week - I was up 1.2 today. Not too bad though!

Yesterday I was reading a thread on one of the SparkleSkirts Facebook groups about how people use Galloway intervals for running. Reading posts in that group has been really interesting - I had no idea that running 30 seconds/walking 30 seconds is a popular interval for people to use until I read about it there a few months back!

Anyway, some people were saying they like 2:00/1:00, 1:00/1:00, etc...so for this morning's run I thought maybe it would be nice to switch things up a bit and try some other intervals.

For the first mile, I did my (now normal) run 4:00/walk 1:00 intervals. For all walking intervals I had the treadmill at 3.3 MPH (18-something minute per mile pace). For the 4:00 run intervals I had the treadmill at 5.8 MPH (10:20/mile pace).

For mile 2, I did run 3:00/walk 1:00...for the run intervals the treadmill was at 5.9 MPH (10:10/mile).

For mile 3, I did run 2:00/walk 1:00...for the run intervals the treadmill was at 6.0 MPH (10:00/mile).

For mile 4, I did run 1:00/walk 1:00. I'm not sure I've ever tried this interval for an extended period of time before...mostly I'll go to that when I'm in survival mode at the end of a looong run. I started with the treadmill at 6.1 MPH (9:50/mile) for the run intervals, but doing this 1/1 interval just seemed to make that last mile take FOREVER. I didn't love it for that reason...I did like the fact that I felt really sort of refreshed when I was done with the run, though. But over the last mile I found myself continuing to increase the speed of the run intervals - eventually I think I got to 9:22/mile pace. My total time for this run was 46:22, about 11:36/mile. So it did slow my pace compared to Tuesday's run...but I did like switching it up a little bit. Definitely something to keep in mind as I keep doing these 4-mile treadmill runs (which will jump to 5-milers soon).

After the run I did three 30-second planks. Not a fan.

We're supposed to get more snow this evening, which is making me increasingly nervous for tomorrow's scheduled 8-miler. More disgruntled drivers giving me dirty looks and honking at me as I run in the street! Yahoo! :( But on the bright side, temperatures are supposed to warm up and we should be in the 40s by Saturday. Good news for my long run!

Friday, November 21: Run #3 (8-mile out-and-back)
Weather: 21 degrees (real feel of 10 degrees), sunny with light snow

Not a bad run today. I was really worried about this one, just because it was supposed to snow...which it did. But it wasn't bad. The first half-mile was tough, just because I was SO VERY COLD. Once I warmed up, though, I was good! I wore my running tights, thicker socks, a long-sleeved tech shirt, my running jacket, gloves, a hat, an ear warmer and sunglasses. At the last minute I wrapped a scarf around my neck and that helped a LOT. Definitely something I think I could only handle for coooold runs though.

I had to go in the street though. :( The sidewalks are still icy, but the roads weren't as busy today. Woohoo! Total time for this run was 1:29:31, 11:11/mile pace.

Also, my DME envelope arrived today. Excitement!!

Saturday, November 22: Run #4 (16-mile run)
Weather: 41 degrees with occasional wind and rain

WOOHOO!! I did it! :yay:

I feel like this is the first really good, really solid Dopey training week I have had. I feel a lot more confident!

This time I mapped my route out ahead of time. Instead of doing one big loop like I normally do, I made it a series out out-and-backs...this worked out surprisingly well. I thought I'd get bored running the same roads over and over, or that I wouldn't like turning around so much (3 times) but it made the run feel a lot shorter in a way, I think because in my head it was broken up into smaller chunks.

The bad thing about possibly using this method in the future is that there are a few points where I'm close to home, so it would be easy to cut the run short. Hopefully I won't do that.

So besides breaking this run into smaller chunks, the other good thing that happened is we have had a lot of melting action over the past 24 hours, so I didn't have to run in the street the entire time! This made the run SO much better. I still had to dart into the street a few times to navigate around leftover ice patches, but it was so nice not to worry about jerk drivers the entire time. I did have to slowly walk through/around puddles quite a bit, so that reflected in my pace. And then during the last mile I ROLLED MY FREAKING ANKLE. :furious: AGAIN. :faint: This time it was the right one (I rolled the left one a few weeks ago). It wasn't as bad as last time and the pain went away quickly, and I finished the run, but still...ARRRRRG!!!! No more of that please!

Total time for this run: 3:09:27, 11:50/mile pace. So much slower than yesterday, but I don't care. This run was tough and I wanted to quit more than once, and I'm so glad I didn't!

IMG_1484.JPG

Selfie is from Friday. I look like a creep in my running gear.

After the run I sat in a tub of coooold water for as long as I could stand (a whopping 4 minutes). Later I stretched and rolled.

Sunday, November 23: Rest Day

Was signed up for yoga, slept in instead. :confused3 I'll hit the mat again one of these days.

We did clean like crazy today though. Nothing motivates me to clean quite like an impending visit from family members...especially when it's my in-laws! I looooove having the house be so clean.

I also grocery stopped today. In general I'm feeling really good after yesterday's run! My quads and hamstrings are a little sore (makes me wish I'd gone to yoga) but otherwise I feel great! I stretched and rolled a little more, and I figured out my schedule for this coming week - THANKSGIVING!! Woohoo!

And then I spent the rest of the day watching old Simpsons episodes with Will...

...and snuggling with my favorite pup, while wearing my new favorite hoodie. Not a bad weekend!

Hooray for a good training week in the books!! Excellent job on your 8 and 16 milers. You will definitely be ready for Dopey!! :thumbsup2 I'm glad you didn't have to fight nasty drivers either. Eek on rolling your ankle though. Glad it didn't amount to anything serious.

The run is sooooooo close. I was playing a little more with our training schedule and I think I'm finally ready to leave it alone. But so few long ones left. :scared:

The weather here was cold the first part of the week, but luckily had warmed up pretty decently by the weekend, so hopefully you guys will get a bit of a thaw soon too.

I've done a lot of playing with intervals for various reasons. We are pretty happily settled in to a 3/1 now and like it, but we are going to adjust that for Goofy. If nothing else sometimes playing with pace and intervals just helps to make the miles go by. I ran briefly with a :30/:30 group last year and HATED it. I felt like I was constantly changing pace and never got to settle in to a comfortable stride. But, it's a big pacing group in our Galloway pack, so a lot of people like it. I've also run 1/1, 2/1, 2:30/1, 1:30/:30. :rotfl: So, I defintely have mixed it up. But, 3/1 is feeling pretty good right now and that's where we are planning to stay for a while.

Hooray for a good training week in the books!!
I knoooow. I don't think I realized how much I needed a good week until this one was over! :cool1:

I hope I will be!!

Yeah, fighting the drivers is getting old already. That's not a good sign since winter is JUST starting. I'm going to have to get used to that. :(

But really with the ankle!! What the heck?! I came home and Will asked how the run went and I was like, "good, but guess what I did?" "You rolled your ankle." Apparently this is just what I do now. :headache: I felt a little tweaky at times yesterday but mostly it feels fine, so I think I dodged a bullet.

I KNOW. Where is time going?!

We did! The snow is completely gone and today they're forecasting a high of 61 degrees!! And then tomorrow right back into the 30s with snow. :sad2:

I definitely liked 3/1 and 2/1. I could see switching to one of those for the marathon or the half. :confused3 I just read your report about trying a shorter interval for the half (going to comment when I finish up here!) and I never thought about doing that! That is really smart! I may have to try that.

I think I would hate it, too. I want to try it because I'm curious, but on the other hand, constantly starting and stopping seems a little frustrating. :confused3

Haha, so you've tried them all! ;)

I still feel like I don't know what my correct, "magic" interval is, but I am pretty sure I like the minute-long walk breaks. I think 30 seconds is too short! :rotfl2:

Way to get out there in the cold and snow! Have I ever asked you where in Ohio you live? I used to live in Shaker Heights during 2006-2010. I didn't run back then, but just thinking about running in that weather makes me shiver! I'm super impressed!!!

Bummer about the Grand Californian! Is that for the disneyland half next year? I'm secretly hoping to do that race too! Haven't brought it up with DH yet though. Lol. Better get through this one first. Haha. Baby steps.

Have fun at your turkey trot this week! I'm also doing one here in Olympia. Gobble, gobble!

Wow! I grew up about 20 minutes south of Shaker and now work downtown - lots of my coworkers live there now. I'm one of the only ones that lives in a west-side suburb. :)

Yep, for the Disneyland Half in 2015. I guess it just wasn't meant to be!

Have you looked at the course map for the DLH? I'm excited to do it, but at the same time...the course itself does not excite me that much, if that makes sense. :confused3

You have fun too, and Happy Thanksgiving!! :goodvibes

Hey! I've thought a few times about you running the Goofy/Unofficial Dopey in 2013 as I trained for the marathon in 2014. I'm currently training for Dopey as well and am glad you are also running it!

I've just read all of your trip reports back to back, and it was wonderful.

Hope to see you at Dopey :yay:
