In Training: Marathon Weekend 2015 (Dopey Challenge)! **COMPLETE**

2015 Walt Disney World 10K - The Outfit

Since my last update was a little blah, I thought I'd close out this week with my next race outfit! :goodvibes

For this year's Royal Family 5K I ran as the Mermaid…

...and now it's time to run as the Sea Witch!

Starting off with the Sea Witch street v from Raw Threads in black. I love, love, love this shirt, especially the back. It glows!

I'll be wearing this top with my PeacockBordeaux SparkleSkirt. :)

And lastly, a purple sparkly SweatyBand.

Per the Marathon Weekend program, Dopey runners will be getting two bibs - one purple, one green. The green bib is for the half marathon/marathon, and the purple bib is for the 5K/10K. Hooray for matching! I will be quite the vision in purple.

Except for my pink Brooks Adrenalines...which don't match, but whatever.

Pretty excited for this outfit! Ursula isn't normally super well-represented at the races (at least from what I have seen) so maybe I'll stand out like the super special snowflake I am. :rolleyes1 :p Hopefully I will run into Ariel on the course to get a good picture!

Yay! another outfit post. :thumbsup2

Love the sea witch shirt and it looks like it goes great with the peacock skirt. Love it!

As far as the intervals, I know how you feel about the 30 second rest break. We trained most of this past season using a 30 second break, but we switched back to 1 minute over the last few weeks and that has been better. On short runs 30 seconds works okay, but anything that gets very long just didn't work well for us.

Totally agree, 1 minute walk breaks seem way better to me. I think you're right that 30 seconds would be okay for shorter runs. I found myself occasionally stretching the 30 second walk breaks to 1 minute (or more at times)...I did it maybe 5 times but still...overall it just didn't work! :confused3

Your sea witch outfit is brilliant! Love it.

30 seconds is very short, isn't it? Mentally I think I'd struggle there as it wouldn't feel like a real break?

Good idea to stick with the 1-minute interval. It's what you're mentally and physically prepared for right now. You don't want to be starting something new this close to the race.

I can now tell you from experience that YES - 30 seconds is really short! Those walk breaks just seemed to fly by...

Hi! :)

Thanks for your input - I definitely got too hung up in what my pace is and the fact that it's not quite where I'd like it to be. You make a great point that it's a little too close to race weekend to be messing around with this stuff...lesson learned! :thumbsup2

You're welcome. If you're going to be messing around with anything, mess around with your Fast Passes :)

2015 Walt Disney World Half Marathon - The Outfit

I've been scrambling to finish stuff up at work (December is always crazy with trying to get stuff done before the end of the year) and am partway through Dopey simulation week (2.5 miles yesterday, 5 miles this morning...10 tomorrow, 20 on Saturday.). I have also been following the marathon thread, where people are starting to dissect various weather reports already.

Over-thinking the weather is something that stresses me out with these Disney races...we can't do anything about it, it is what it is. Yet for whatever reason seeing people throw out worst-case scenarios is just not fun to me. Especially when I'm kind of stressed out about work and nervous about running 30 miles over the next 48 hours. :faint:

So time to think about something fun!! ::yes::

I actually think this is the outfit I'm most excited about for this race weekend (this one or the 5K outfit...tough choice for me!).

Something different for this race - this is the only one I will be running as part of a duo!

Last month, I did the Wine & Dine (or was it Splash & Dash?) half marathon with 3 friends. Two of these three friends run about the same pace that I do, and one of them happens to be signed up for the WDW Half Marathon. Before Wine & Dine she asked if I wanted to run together - and I said sure! Good thing we run at the same pace! :)

We also ran the Royal Family 5K together in February - I was wearing my Mermaid Raw Threads shirt, and she was wearing her Sea Witch Raw Threads shirt. So she came up with the idea of doing another villain/princess combo in January as well. Fine by me! She was actually corralled a few spots in front of me but will be dropping back to Corral I.

This is another instance where I took advantage of Raw Threads' Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale. I snagged their Snow White shirt at about 25% off the regular price.
Snow.jpg

I'm pretty sure that blue is going to show the sweat and not look so nice by the end of the race...and RT shirts don't breathe super well, so I may be regretting this choice at some point. I feel like I'll survive in RT shirts for the 5K and the 10K...but a half is starting to get up there for running in a potentially uncomfortable shirt. :confused3 I will NOT be running in a Raw Threads shirt for the marathon, that's for sure.

But I'll soldier on through the potential discomfort because this shirt is just so super cute (the things I do for you, runDisney...). I kind of love it...and Snow isn't even my favorite princess! But she seems like a good choice since I’ll be running the Dopey Challenge. Love the dwarves' hats on the back.

I have a decent number of SparkleSkirts at this point, but none of them are yellow - and while I fully admit that I am addicted to these skirts, I'm not SO addicted that I'll buy a new skirt just for one race. If it was one that I thought I'd use more in the future, sure, but I just can't really see myself wearing a plain yellow skirt very much. There was another skirt I'd been eyeing for quite awhile that I thought would work with this shirt, so I did get that one a couple of weeks ago:
DSC_0026_large.jpg

It's called MouseInTheMix! ::MickeyMo So cute. And it totally goes with the Snow shirt.

One new thing I DID buy for this outfit is this red SweatyBand with a bow - it's just TOO CUTE and TOO PERFECT to pass up. It was 25% off for Black Friday so that helped a bit!
Untitled.jpg

Man, this post could be a drinking game. Drink every time I use the wored *cute*!! :drinking1

Gah. It's really too bad that I don’t have a yellow skirt because this would be a pretty decent Snow White knock-off otherwise! I'm still happy with it though. :)

And my friend will be running with me as the Evil Queen! :yay: Fun! And so nice that I will have company for one of the races!

One more outfit left...who’s it gonna be?!

I'm not brave enough to wear a RT T for anything longer than the 5k!

I'm going as the Cheshire Cat with the matching RT vest top, and I fully expect to be very icky with sweat by the end. Errr, I mean, I anticipate I shall glow like a lady :dance3:

Very cute! :drinking1

I have to agree that RT t-shirts are not great for long distances. Good luck!

In other news, they JUST revealed the merchandise previews. God help me $$$ :scared1::scared:

Glow like a lady...hahaha!! :rotfl2: :thumbsup2 Your costume sounds really cute!!

Cheers!!

Thanks for the luck. Hopefully the RT will not be so bad!

I saw that merchandise!!! So...I actually don't really like the Dopey stuff. Like, at all. :confused3 I'll get the I Did It shirt but otherwise I like the half marathon, marathon and Goofy stuff WAY better. At least from what they have released. I'm sure I'll still manage to spend a good amount! :rotfl:

Your costume sounds really cute!!

Well, will just have to wait and see how annoying the tail is..... The bets are on, very!

I know you are supposed to practice running in your race day outfits first - but my neighbours just aren't ready to see me running with ears and a tail!

Week 6 of Dopey Challenge Training
Monday, December 15, 2014 - Sunday, December 21, 2014

37.5 miles completed
166.65 miles completed in Dopey Challenge training so far
813.26 miles completed in 2014 so far

Monday, December 15: 60-minute Core class

Oy, another Monday. But weirdly enough, I actually feel...excited (??) for this week. I cannot believe that one week from now I'll be tapering for Marathon Weekend! Woohoo!

Speaking of taper...I need to decide how to handle it from a Core perspective. I'm definitely planning on keeping up yoga during taper (may try to add back in my Friday class so that I'm going Friday and Sunday), but I'm not sure if I should keep up with Core class. Core is really, really tough so I'm afraid if I keep it going it'll break my taper. Hmm...having said that, I'm leaning toward keeping it in my schedule right now and just making modifications as usual. Class was good today though - I felt like I kept up pretty well overall.

My remaining pre-taper schedule/weather forecast...

Today - 60-minute Core class (sort of wish I was running today - forecasted high of 54 degrees!!)
Tomorrow - Rest Day (sort of wish I was running today - forecasted high of 50 degrees!!)
Wednesday 12/17 - 2.5-mile treadmill run
Thursday 12/18 - 5-mile treadmill run
Friday 12/19 - 10-mile run (high of 32 degrees, 0% chance of precipitation)
Saturday 12/20 - 20-mile run (high of 35 degrees, 20% chance of precipitation)

Overall the forecast is better than what I was looking at on Thursday...a few degrees colder but less chance of precipitation all week is definitely a good thing. When I was training for the 2012 marathon I couldn't do my 20-miler at all because of a blizzard...and then when I was training for Goofy 2013 I had two 20-milers on my schedule - I managed to get the first 20-miler done but cut the second one short at 16 miles because the weather was awful and I was miserable. So I am 1-for-3 when it comes to 20-milers during training. Hopefully after this weekend I'll be 2-for-4!!

In trip planning news, I tried again with the BoG Fastpass+ and was able to push ours back - I finally figured out that if I go to the page where the available windows of time are listed, I could just refresh and make different times come up. It seems like it would be much easier to just have ALL available times listed on the screen, like they do with Fastpass+ for the rides...but whatever. :confused3 But mostly I'm just glad to have a FP+ time that we will (hopefully) be able to use. LOVE Be Our Guest for lunch.

Tuesday, December 16: Rest Day

Yay for sleeping in! I am feeling oddly anxious to get this running week started though - I just want to get it done already!!

The weather forecast still looks good..we have a chance of snow tonight/tomorrow but it's not supposed to be anything crazy. Then the chance of any kind of precipitation is supposed to hold off almost completely until Saturday night. So Friday/Saturday will be chilly, but dry. Here's hoping!

Random one...look at how pretty!

Wednesday, December 17: 2.5-mile run

Dopey simulation week has officially begun! :thumbsup2

Nothing too exciting about this run...except that I did it wearing Haunted. How appropriate!

IMG_1748.jpg

I stuck to 3:1 intervals...during the 3-minute run intervals I set the treadmill to 6 MPH (10:00/mile pace). This felt surprisingly not good for the first 0.5 miles or so, but once I warmed up it felt fine! Total time for the run was 28:12, about 11:17/mile pace.

I read this on Facebook and though it was pretty cool...
1 week from today is Christmas Eve
2 weeks from today is New Year's Eve
And 3 weeks from today is Dopey Eve! It's coming up quick!

Thursday, December 18: 5-mile run

Moving right along over here...

After bailing on my 5-mile treadmill run last week, I had been sort of dreading this one. But once I got to the gym this morning I was ready to get it done. So far I have been in a really good mindset this week - I'm excited to get these runs in! I think mostly because I'm excited to get to tapering. :)

I played around with the intervals similarly to how I've been doing it with other 5-mile runs. Today’s run took me 57:30, an 11:30/mile pace. After I was done, I thought, "woohoo! Two runs down, two runs to go - I'm halfway!" Until I thought about it more and realized that mileage-wise, I'm not even a quarter of the way done with this week. Oh well!

Random aside: I have been going to bed a little later than usual this week. Why? I have recently discovered a new show on HGTV - Tiny House Hunters. Description of the show: "Follow home seekers across the country as they look to downsize, way down. They'll check out three unique streamlined houses under 600 square feet before deciding on the perfect compact kingdom to call home."

This show is FASCINATING. I cannot stop watching it. I love HGTV anyway, but even Will has gotten sucked into this one. The problem is that the show goes from 10PM - 10:30PM, and ultimately I'd like to be in bed somewhere in that window. I need to get smarter and start DVRing.

ANYWAY...

The weather forecast for this weekend still looks REALLY good - little-no chance of rain and little-no wind. Temperatures will be in the mid-low 30s, so it'll be chilly...but realistically this is about as good as I could hope for, for this time of year. ::yes::

3 weeks until the WDW 5K!! Woohoo!

Friday, December 19: 10-mile run
Weather: 32 degrees and overcast

Day 3 is DONE!

IMG_1775.jpg

Today began with a slightly panicky moment - I got up, looked out the window to the backyard and...SNOW. It had snowed overnight! I was shocked and disappointed...this wasn't in the forecast at all. And now I was looking at a backyard covered in white.

Once I looked out front I was relieved to see that 1. It hadn't snowed too much, and 2. Whatever snow had come down had already melted off of the sidewalks, which were wet, but not ice- or snow-covered. Whew! Apparently the threat of snow was a bigger worry to me than I realized (although, looking back at the entries for the rest of this week I DID mention the weather forecast almost every day...:scratchin)

After I realized conditions were in my favor, it was time to get ready. I wasn't nervous for this run at all...more annoyed that I had to do it. Let's face it, this training plan - really, this entire year - has been building to this week all along, but more than anything it's been building to this 20-miler...and I'm just so ready to get it done! But no...gotta do the 10 first. I am looking forward to the confidence boost finishing this mock Dopey will give me, though (assuming I survive!).

Today I tried something different - don't worry, I didn't mess with the intervals again. :) If I listen to anything when I run its music - specifically Disney Parks Loops. My friend (who is training for the marathon) mentioned she likes to listen to podcasts and specifically said she's been enjoying "Serial" lately and thought I'd like it. So I downloaded the first three episodes (about 2 hours worth) and listened to them on my run.

I LOVED it! It was so interesting! And it made my run go by so quickly. I downloaded the rest of the episodes and can't wait to listen to them tomorrow.

Anyway, I'm not sure if it was the podcast distracting me or what, but this run felt very easy for the mostpart. I had some weird foot pain for the first mile or two, but once I got warmed up that seemed to go away. After last week's ill-fated attempt at 3:30/:30 intervals I went back to 4/1 and that worked much better for me. Total time for this run was 1:54:35, 11:27/mile pace. I'm hoping tomorrow's run will be at a similar pace, but overall I'll be happy with anything under 12:00/mile. If I do 12-minute miles the 20 miles will take me 4 hours...and I'd REALLY like to be done in less than 4 hours. I mean, realistically I can't do it much faster than 4 hours (I'm thinking I'll finish somewhere in the 3:50-4:00 range) but still...4 hours just SOUNDS so freaking long. Somehow even 3:55 seems shorter...which it is, but not by much. Just because the time doesn't start with a "4." You know what I mean. I'm sitting here chugging water and getting loopy. Time for Tiny House Hunters!

Just one more run left and then it's TAPER TIME!!! :yay:

Saturday, December 20: 20-mile run
Weather: 28 degrees and overcast

TAPER TIME!!!!! :dance3: And it could not have come at a better time!!

My mental state was pretty good the morning of this run...I was starting to dread it just a little bit, but mostly I was excited to do it, get it done, and have confidence going into Dopey weekend.

After running out of water during my 18-miler and calling Will for Gatorade, I decided not to take any chances today. I filled my Camelback up with water and stuffed a 12-ounce bottle of fruit punch Gatorade inside.

This isn't the exact one I have (I have had mine for a few years and it's no longer made) but it's a lot like this one:
1249_virtual_pink_l.jpg

I thought it would be heavy and annoying, but it really wasn’t. More than anything it was good to know that I had everything I needed with me.

The first 15 miles of this run were really good. My legs felt tired, but not sore and I was listening to "Serial" again...which wasn't holding my attention as well, I think just because I was more nervous today. I’d planned out a route that had 2 out-and-backs, and right at the turn-around of the second out-and-back (15.25 miles) I had freaking soreness in my left arch...again. :sad2: It wasn't the same area (or foot) that I hurt in September, and the pain wasn't as bad as it was then, but it was still very disappointing. I took extra long walk breaks and my pace climbed from about 11:45 to over 12:00/mile. The weird thing was, I would walk long enough and the pain would go away, and then I'd run, and the faster I ran, the less the arch bothered me. :confused3 So I'm guessing as I got more tired on the run I ran slower - too slow, similar to what I did during Wine & Dine - and my form got weird...and thus the arch pain. Also, the shoes I was wearing were pretty shot. I have 2 new pairs ready to go, so hopefully that will help.

I'm trying to explain this all away, but it still makes me pretty nervous. :sad1: There were so many times during that last 4.75 miles I wanted to quit...I just kept taking walk breaks and managed to finish in 4:09:29, 12:29/mile pace. Obviously not what I wanted, and not quite the confidence booster I was looking for, but I'm happy I did finish.

After the run I sat in a tub of colder water for as long as I could stand (about 6 minutes...with all of the extra walking I suddenly became VERY aware of how cold it was outside!) and overall the arch feels okay. A little soreness on occasion but overall it feels normal. I will definitely be watching it closely over the next 2.5 weeks... will be wearing compression sock a LOT.

But despite the 20-miler not going perfect, 75% of it WAS pretty good...and overall I am proud of my effort this week. :)

Sunday, December 21: Warm Yoga Flow planned, unscheduled rest day taken

Worst night of sleep EVER last night! And I thought I would sleep like a rock after running 20 miles...nope. I must've woken up 15-20 times...no exaggeration. Ugh! So I slept in.

Overall foot feels good today! The arch has only bothered me once. My quads and hamstrings are SORE.

Hooray for taper!

Congrats on your 20 miler! Woo-hoo! I'm kinda jealous since I'm missing mine due to my knee. Ugh! Funny to think that I would be jealous of such a thing. Lol. But good for you!!! Glad your foot is feeing better today! I also love to listen to podcasts on my long runs. They're so good for distracting your mind! My favorites are the DIS Unplugged, Disney Food Blog, Stuff You Missed in History Class, and Sawbones. I'll have to check out Serial!

My quads and hamstrings are SORE.

Walk, walk, walk. Yoga, yoga, yoga. You need to keep your muscles engaged and stretch them out. Nothing too strenuous the day after a long run, but they need to be active.

Good job on getting your simulation week done! Now for the taper madness. :)

I just started listening to this on Friday! I find that I can only listen to it in the car, so I plan to listen to them on my drives home from work, until I run out of episodes. I considered listening to it during my 20 miler as well, but I really don't like running with earbuds so I chose not to.

I'm hoping tomorrow's run will be at a similar pace, but overall I'll be happy with anything under 12:00/mile. :lmao: This was exactly my mindset as well! For some reason I have been able to do these long long runs faster than my short 5 milers. :confused3 My 18 and 19 milers were just under 12 so that was my goal for this one. My Garmin was glitchy though, and even though I should have had a few minutes of buffer before I hit 4 hours, I suddenly found myself cutting it close and practically sprinted the last half mile to finish in 3:59 and change haha.

Congrats on making it to taper time! It's such a great feeling!

Thanks Summer!! I was so sorry to hear that your knee has been bothering you. :( I hope it's feeling better!

Thanks for the podcast recommendations, I will definitely check those ones out! My same friend that recommended Serial also said she likes Mickey Miles so I may try that one too.

Yessir! ::yes:: I walked and did a bit of yoga at home, feeling MUCH better today!

The taper madness has already begun for me...I had my first Marathon Weekend nightmare last night!!

I think your peak week is this week, right?? If so, good luck!!

I was VERY surprised by how much I liked listening to it while running. I actually just finished up the entire podcast this morning while driving into work and I feel a little lost now! Time to find a new one to listen to. ::yes::

For some reason I have been able to do these long long runs faster than my short 5 milers. :confused3 My 18 and 19 milers were just under 12 so that was my goal for this one. My Garmin was glitchy though, and even though I should have had a few minutes of buffer before I hit 4 hours, I suddenly found myself cutting it close and practically sprinted the last half mile to finish in 3:59 and change haha.

Congrats on making it to taper time! It's such a great feeling!
LOL!! I totally would have done the same thing, sprinting to make it to 3:59! Once I started taking the longer walk breaks I knew I wasn't going to make it under 4 hours so I just didn't worry about it. :confused3

And congrats to you as well!!! :yay:

Yessir! ::yes:: I walked and did a bit of yoga at home, feeling MUCH better today!

The taper madness has already begun for me...I had my first Marathon Weekend nightmare last night!!

I think your peak week is this week, right?? If so, good luck!!

Glad the walking and yoga helped. I find it really hard to go do, but totally worth it in the end. And yes, peak week is this week with a long day of travel and resulting jet lag thrown in the middle just to keep the challenge level up. :)

Your marathon nightmare sure didn't take long to show up. Ah, the joys of tapering. If it's not the crazy dreams, it's the paranoia of every sniffle turning into the worst sickness known to man.
