In Search of My Body vol.9 - I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends

Get the thin, tech wear and layer up. Same with gloves and hat. I use UnderArmour for head and hands. Very thin, but very warm. Yup, UA is an expensive brand. But that is because it does what it is supposed to...keeps you warm without adding any real bulk.

Remember that your head is most important. So get the right hat. Then I usually wear an UnderArmour turtle neck (not compression gear...I never wear any of that).

Jo- Listen to E, she's a smart woman! I am also a fan of Under Armour's hats. I used to wear mine all the time when skating on the pond and we'd be out there in the same kind of weather E talked about. I'm actually an Under Armour junkie (I will admit to even owning Under Armour thongs!) and also love the turtle necks for cold winter activities. I will say I only pay full price for Under Armour if it's something I really want otherwise I get it at the outlet, my Sports Authority always has stuff on their sale rack and TJ Maxx always has some too.

I look at cold weather running as an excuse for buying more running clothes. ;)

Morning ladies! I'm off to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts today with my Dad and my sister. I haven't been there in ages so I'm psyched we're going. They have some amazing artwork there and my sister loves the Egyptian wing. A day off, so nice.

Kelly- I really with I could transport things via the computer, breakfast today is banana bread from a local farm stand. It's seriously like eating something homemade. Oh and I'm so happy you're a Top Gear fan, love that show!

Nancy- I was a little sore last night. I am embarrassed to say I'm still in bed though so I can't speak for today. :guilty:

Jo- Have fun on the field trip, where is it to?

Paula- Let us know how JC goes!

Ok guess it's time to get up and moving.

Jackson Cash. :goodvibes I can't stop grinning. So happy for you Amy!:lovestruc

Paula - JC tonight. Please check in after ok?

Kat, Meg & Jo - just wondering if anyone is sore from their race on Sunday? And Jo, I want to know about the socks. Did you wear your new socks for the race? If so, how did your feet feel? I'm due for new running shoes very, very soon.

I was SORE yesterday, but am good today other than the shin.

I have some sports med doc recommendations from my hockey crowd (go figure ) so I am following up on that today.

I also need to go exchange the new running shoes for a smaller size.

Transplanted Southern girl over here doesn't do cold. You crazy Northerners can have your sub zero running. :goodvibes

Remember that your head is most important. So get the right hat.

and there it is. right there. The whole "hat" thing. That's exactly why I can't run outside in the winter :lmao:

Morning ladies! I'm off to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts today with my Dad and my sister.

How fun! Have a great time Meg!

I was SORE yesterday, but am good today other than the shin.

stupid shin. Hopefully you'll get your shoes straightened out. I can testify to the importance of the right shoe. It makes a world of difference for me. Do any of the people in your run club use the "barefoot" running shoes? I'm so curious about those!

Running in cooler weather is great. Erika can go lower than I can. I stop in the low 20s. In my defense, it's always dark. I can go lower with the sun shining. I wear an earband and gloves, long sleeve technical tee and tights. I have a few pairs of tights that I bought years ago for cycling. Despite their stretchiness they are getting baggy. I love my UA running shorts (7"), but am loathe to pay big money for running gear. I bought a pair of tights/leggings from the store which must not be named. $12 and nearly free shipping. The are heavy enough and synthetic. First run in them this morning. No pilling and comfy. Keepers. I've ordered some Danskin tights from the same evil empire - $8 . I can make returns at the store. I keep looking at runningwarehouse, but $45 and up is all I find. I'm becoming miserly. I'm always cold stepping out the door, and I should be. After the first mile the furnace is getting stoked and I'm comfortable. If the earband gets too warm I pull it down around my neck. I need a tech turtleneck or two. I also have a neck gaiter I'll pull out and a fleece beanie if it's windy.

I do feel stiffer after a cold run. I need to get up and do a lap around the building once an hour. About now ; )

As for Curtis the running mentor, his advice on injuries was "can you forget about it while you're running?" If you can, it's not bad. If the pain is persistent enough that you cannot get it out of your mind, get it looked at. I can work with that.

Sitting behind a stupid firewall I'll see pics of Jackson later today.

Meg - museum sounds fun!

Everyone have a great day!

No, actually. Galloway does not recommend barefoot running shoes. According to his answer at the seminar I attended in May, he believes the "running barefoot" thing is a fad. He also said that he has seen it come and go multiple times in the years he has been running.

If all I did was run on dirt and trails and we still lived in a survival of the fittest kind of world, I might believe the evolutionary defense that my body was "made" to run and the shoes are unnecessary. However, I don't think asphalt/concrete was part of the evolutionary process, so I am going to stick with the cushioning.

:scared1: :rotfl2:

I like the injury advice. Makes me feel a bit less guilty about the tweaks and twinges.

No, actually. Galloway does not recommend barefoot running shoes.

While I'm no expert, that's pretty much the same conclusion I came to. Running on concrete, asphalt and TM's is not "natural", and there has been years and years of research on running shoes and how to best suit the individuals needs. I'm still curious about people who use them, what kind of running they do and if they feel that the "barefoot" shoes have helped them in any way....in that same vein, I wonder how many of the folks who now swear by "barefoot" had been wearing improperly fitting shoes and so they've never really had the benefit of a good shoe to begin with.

ah well. Time to do something productive with my day off :upsidedow

Jo- Listen to E, she's a smart woman!

SEE?!?! This is why I need to come here more often! :rotfl2:

TOTALLY an excuse to buy more running gear! OMG, I have a serious addiction. And I agree...I only buy UA at the outlet. GREAT savings.

OMG, flashbacks of the Princess.....:rotfl2:

And again...flashbacks from the Princess! :lmao: There I am with sunglasses, iPod headphones, and a freaking TIARA all on my head/face and Nancy is flipping out because she can't have anything touch her...

I have always believed this to be true as well. Plus, it just makes sense that "real" ground/natural surface has some give to it whereas asphalt doesn't. And obviously that give is going to make life easier on your joints.

All that being said...whenever I run on any surface other than the road, I get massive shin splints. The track at the high school (which has that sort of spongy surface), the treadmill...all of these surfaces that are supposed to be more gentle for you...yeah, they kick the sh*t outta my shins. So maybe it also has something to do with what you are used to? My running coach thought it was bizarre that I got shin splints from softer surfaces, but there it is...

Yes, Cathie, you missed it  the season is about 1/2 over. And I'm with Ronda - this season is just missing something for me...

Haha, I had a feeling I'd missed a good amount. Every season I swear I'm going to watch the show (I really do like it, just hate coming in on the middle) and then I forget!!! I need to just set up my DVR so it'll get next season lol.

Have a great time! I've actually never been to an art museum, which is pretty pathetic when you think about the fact that I'm an art major. :rolleyes1 We have a pretty nice one in Denver though, and they have an exhibit right now centered around King Tut. Seeing as how I have to write a paper for my art class about some 2d work, I think I'm going to try to go see it next week on one of my days off. I've always been fascinated with all things Egyptian, so I think I'll enjoy it.

And Paula, I am SO ready for this appt.

I emailed my doctor yesterday asking her about the possibility of IBS and hypothyroidism (my dad has it and I have some of the symptoms). She said she'd like to test my thyroid if the G.I. office can't find a conclusive answer. She also said that IBS is a difficult diagnosis to make, and that it often is made when all other possibilities are exhausted, so she wants the G.I. specialist to do what they can before she looks into IBS. Makes sense, I guess. I think the most frustrating thing to me is that we can only test for one thing at a time, and each takes a week or two, between the office visit and consult, actual test, and next office visit to find out the results.

We're going to go see Harry Potter this weekend, and starting some Christmas shopping, so I'm hoping it will be easier to be in good spirits than it was this last weekend. It'll be nice to not be on the couch all weekend at least, just not sure how much shopping I'll be able to handle. Carlos joked that we could get one of the EVCs that the stores provide....if it gets too bad, I don't know that it'll be much of a joke. :sad2:

Hi Everyone!

This post is me trying desperately to get LisaV out of Lurkdom...

Royal Wedding!!!!!

Very excited (and not only because it gives us an extra day off work!) :lmao:

Amy - congratulations on baby Jackson - he is adorable :lovestruc

Hope everyone is having a great day - be back later with a real post! :cool2:

If I were Kate, I'm not sure I want that ring.

Back to the day off... seriously?

Ronda

I would definitely NOT want that ring! The sentiment was nice but it hardly seems like a 'lucky marriage' ring does it! I read today (I didn't know this before) but the royal family have a piece of gold, and any royal that gets married gets a bit of the gold to have their wedding rings made. So all the royal family have the same gold for their rings!

And the day off - not confirmed yet as no date is set but usually, yes! Its very odd I know!
Also, in 2012 there is an additional bank holiday to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee!

This post is very British today! :rotfl2:

I stop in the 30s I think. I may give it a few tries this winter, but I am certainly never doing 37 and raining again.

Definitely miserly here. Store which shall not be named, or clearance racks at other stores, are my friends.

I got lucky in that I bought some long sleeved tech tees and tights back in 2003 when I picked up hockey, before realizing that wearing that under your gear is akin to setting yourself on fire. I have a "hockey drawer" that I raided and scored two good pairs of running tights and two long sleeved UA tees.

WOW, I missed alot today.

Thank you all for the cold weather advice, I have a bondi band for my head, so far just cheap gloves for my hands. I have some tech long sleves and a tech jacket. I have been doing OK so far, now that all my long races are done my training runs with be done near my house, so I can always drop stuff at the house as I run past.

Today we went to see Fancy Nancy at the theather with Pre School, K and 1st. It was a nice day. Then while the girls were back at school I hit Kohls again for ME!! I got 4 shirts and a tech sports bra $29.00 out the door!!

Have a great day all!

Royal Wedding!!!!!

Very excited (and not only because it gives us an extra day off work!) :lmao:

I was wondering if the British population were as fixated on a Royal Wedding as we here in the U.S. seem to be. This morning the Today Show started with "BREAKING NEWS". Their lead story? William and Kate. For a country that fought so hard to be liberated from her "mother" we Americans apparently are still having a hard time letting go

If I were Kate, I'm not sure I want that ring.

Me either! Thanks, but no thanks.

"bank holiday". Is that what they call random days off? :confused3

Tonight was the Cross Country Awards night at the High School. What a bittersweet evening. So sad that Nate is done. But, he did go out on a high note - he recieved the award for "Most Improved". Big ol' trophy :thumbsup2 I'm very proud of him. :lovestruc

Paula - yooohooo! I hope you are planning on checking in tonight :upsidedow

I'm here... JC went as expected. I was up a little bit (about a pound and a half) thanks to a big splurge on Saturday night when I ended up at a very high end restaurant (think the Yachtsmen steakhouse or Narcoosies... the cheapest cut of steak was a filet for $45 and that is just for the meat, sides are extra) where nothing is cooked without lots of carbs and fat. The polenta I had tasted like pure butter. I had four forkfuls and that was that. No good could have come from eating any more. The dinner was amazing! I splurged, I enjoyed it, I owned it and now I am moving on. I do need to drink more water though. I am seriously behind in that dept thus the salt in my body currently.

I did go to the gym after my appointment. Got a good butt kicking from Jesse and then logged in 10 miles on the spin bike with some intervals. It felt good to get back on the bike again.

Sounds like everyone is doing well here tonight...

Nancy, Congrats to Nate!

Paula, Dinner sounded yummy. And how amazing, you just posted that after a butt kickig work out you did 10 miles on the bike. Just Amazing!!!
