In Search of My Body - Not the One I Ate, VOL 7! Princesses? Nope, just us Goddesses!

Morning all

Thanks for the advice on my lunch!!!!!! There is a lot of information out there but it is all good information here so I'm definitely going to try to put it into practice.

This week is crazy for me. Getting ready for the wedding cake I'm doing next week and some serious deep down issues talk with the beyonce. Oy. That's an update in and of itself. We are okay we just have a lot to work on.

Today is a down day for me. Veteran's day was always a day that was very somber for Grandpa, remember his friends he'd lost, and those live he had to take in the line of duty. I never felt the magnitude of the day, until today, now that he's no longer here. After 5 months I thought it would be easier, but I think about him every day and still miss him so bad. It is so odd to make holiday plans without taking him into account. Going to be rough for the holidays.

Hope everyone's week is going well.

Hey--back at home and all is well. (Nothing major, for those who don't know...Riley just needed to have 4 teeth extracted, so he is somewhat uncomfortable.)

Lyz--I am just about done with everyone. Two main gifts left to purchase that I am clueless on. I am ALWAYS clueless on these, though, so that is not unexpected. And then I still have to help the kids finish their shopping, too. I don't consider myself done until they are done. I (Jeff & I) buy for about 20 people, and the kids each buy for about 11, so that's another 33 for me to keep track of. I also always have to keep a stash of bonus generic gifts on hand for those who show up with a gift that we weren't planning on. Then there are the stockings, which is huge in our family. (We do stockings for the 5 of us, my parents who are with us on Christmas morning and my brother who is also with us. But everyone puts a few things in each stocking.) Yes, a spreadsheet is involved.

Next week I will order Christmas cards and get that taken care of. Yes, I will be posting pics on here so that you all can help me decide which should be our Christmas Card photo.

My side is big enough that we just draw names, so that is great. But Jeff's side, everyone buys for everyone. There really aren't that many of them, so it isn't a big deal other than the fact that they are impossible to buy for. SO frustrating. Even they know that they are hard to buy for. They all just end up getting each other gift cards which annoys me.

Still trying to figure out Thanksgiving though. Not sure who will be where yet.

Don't want to be a downer....so if you don't want to read, I can understand.....

This day has taken a definite turn for the worst. This morning I logged onto my local news website as normal, and found a story about an unidentified female found who was killed in a hit and run sometime between last night at 7:30 and this morning at 7:30. there were no details at that time.

About half an hour ago I got a text message from a friend telling me.....it was my friend Candice's oldest sister. I have known this family since I was little and gone to church with them, they are part of the very tight knit community that is in our small town. Candice, her two other sisters, and her mother are in NY right now, I think for a modeling job, and won't be home until Sunday. The two boys and her father are at home and they all know.

I am........filled with so much right now. I am so upset, but even more so at what the family must be going through right now. I can't imagine what's going through their heads...can't even begin to imagine. Filled with anger. How can you hit someone and just leave them to die? If you are driving drunk and afraid to get caught, call from a payphone. Anything. How heartless do you have to be to leave someone to DIE. I don't know what to feel.

Please send any thoughts/prayers you have to this family and our community.

Dawn- here's my thoughts, fwiw.

First - there is no "one size fits all" food plan that works for everyone. Sadly, you may have to muddle thru a bit of trial and error to find what works best for you.

Now - think of your metabolism like a fire. You want that fire to burn slow and steady all day, not flash up and burn out just to have to be relit. How does one accomplish that?

Multiple smaller, nutritional meals evenly spaced throughout the day is what works for me. Our society tends to be very focused on the big meal at dinner theory. So, in an effort to cut calories and lose weight, we skimp and *save* all day long until dinner comes around. Well -if you've put only twigs and no logs in your fireplace all day, do you really expect that fire will still be burning at dinner time? Not likely from my experience.

You may consider trying to space your allotted calories (or points, or food selections, or however you are counting) evenly over the course of the day. So between your breakfast and mid-morning snack you've eaten 1/3 of your food. By the time lunch and mid-afternoon snack have been consumed you're at 2/3, and finally dinner and perhaps a little something in the evening to round out your numbers.

I find that if I do not eat sufficient calories early in the day, I'm ravished later and never really *catch up" with that satisfied feeling. There is a bit of a learning curve involved - perhaps making yourself eat more in the morning if you aren't a breakfast lover, realizing that what appears to be a preschooler sized dinner really is an appropriate amount of food....it takes time and re-training of your brain. But for me, a balanced approach to the day really works.

Now - the food choices. Calories in must be less than calories out, very true. But not all calories are created equal. 150 calories of a lean protein or a whole grain is going to give you much longer lasting fuel on your fire than 150 calories of sugar, which is going to burn up like lighter fluid.

Your long lasting foods (logs for your fire) come from your lean proteins (ex: tuna, chicken, turkey, egg whites) and complex carbs (ex: whole grain pastas and breads, brown rice). Add in a small amount of good fats (ex: olive oil, almonds) and plenty of fresh fruits and veggies (really - 'cause no one ever got fat by eating too many fruits & veggies!).

Your "quick burn" foods would be things like white breads & pastas, white potatoes, refined sugars, candy, cookies, cakes, chips, sodas, juice drinks - "empty calories" that while they may taste good at the moment, really don't offer much nutritionally. These foods don't necessarily need to be completely eliminated from anyone's diet, but knowing that they aren't going to offer you the long-term appetite satisfaction that the *quality* foods are can at least help you make an informed choice.

Also - watch condiments carefully. Mayo, salad dressings, croutons- they can be very calorie dense. Ceasar Salad? Great - until you put a Ceasar dressing on it. Then you've just voided all the nutritional good you were trying to accomplish. And processed foods- like canned soups and deli/lunch meat for example - can be very high in sodium. Some people (like ME) are very sensitive to the sodium and will retain water like there's no tomorrow. So if you have a tendancy to bloat due to salt, choose those things sparingly and just know that if you do eat those foods you may see a gain until your body can successfully flush it's system out.

OH - and always feed your body after you work out. Preferably within the first hour. Plan your meal/snack time so that you get a nutritional sound feeding to keep your body burning efficiently.

HTH :flower3:

CATHIE! That is just awful. I can't even imagine. Absolutely prayers for the family. :grouphug:

Cathie - how awful. Prayers are on their way.

Dawn - listen to Nancy as that was a great analogy. Lots of good info there.

Ronda - the couch was fabulous last night. Just what I needed. No couch tonight - cardio workout in my future.

Home from work - Mom says Argh!!! :rotfl:

Before I read everything from today, I have a confession. Until last night, I was a BL virgin. Yep, that's right. Never watched it. I found it on Hulu and LOVE it! OMG! I will catch up on the show.:love:

Nancy and all - thanks for the advice and encouragement.

I am doing sparkpeople because I liked the graph visual for me at the end of the day to know I have broken my food into right size portions throughout the day and snacks and the fat/carb counter keeps me in check. Lean protein is something I will be putting on my grocery list and adding tom.

I am not craving sweets like I used to at all. When I do I have a few Trader Joes dark chocolate almonds and usually 1/2 a serving is beyond satisfying.

I dumped all whites from our cupboards and have gone to whole grain pastas, breads and even brown rice so tha is a great feat for a carb junkie.

Getting dinner ready and at this point I am at: Red is where I can fall between

CALORIES 1,064 1,200 - 1,550
CARBS 89 163 - 236
FAT 62 32 - 56
PROTEIN 43 60 - 127

Fat is high because I had 2 brats at lunch - way hi in fat but literally the only meat we had here and I was thinking protein in.

The rest came from a banana, 1 tbsp of all fruit rhubarb/strawberry spread, 1 tbsp creamy peanut butter, 1 sandwhich flat and a half serving of the TJ choc covered almonds.

Dinner is steamed broccoli, brown rice and a boca chicken pattie I scrounged up in the freezer - maybe another sandwhich flat since I have carb room - will let you know. I will be over in my fat but under for everything else.

Excersize today was - 1 hour of water aerobics and 1/2 hour of raking leaves!

I am going to put all of your advice onto paper and hit the net tonight looking for recipies - and make a shopping list.

Got a virus on the house computer and Dan had laptop so I was so afraid to eat anymore until I inputed my info into sparkpeople - and now find out I was way under on some things - like you said - learning all of this and putting it into practice is like learning a whole new language.

I don't beat myself up any longer though. The old me would have chowed on the box of mac n cheese in the cupboard and the pecan pie in the freezer for Thanksgiving. Or the town house crackers or the other things I know was going to send me into a carb coma.

So yeah for small improvements and big ones at the same time.

I actually felt muscle in my bicep today, my calves are tight and my lower hind end is dissapearing because I can feel it in my jeans.

Chad even complimented me about all of this today which also might mean the world is comming to an end but I will take it as a huge victory for me! :cool1:

Paula - I'm glad your mom is on the road to recovery.

Lyz - you can throw me into the dash to find a Zhu Zhu. I'm all over the place, so I will look too. Never thought to try the corer on a pear. Awesome idea.

Kelly - how was date night?

Ronda - You really should get an apple corer. They rock. The veggie dip sounds great.

Cathie - so sad on your friend's older sis. I am so terribly sorry!

E - I'm glad Riley is doing better. I love that you use a spreadsheet for gift tracking. It makes perfect sense!

Cathie - so sorry about the sad news. Will absolutely be thinking of you and their family this holiday season.

I finished the 2nd episode of BL and moving on to the 3rd now. I don't like Tracey, so far.

Hope this turn out - thought of you Liz when I saw this. Not sure if you are still thinking a tree tattoo or not -

Cathie - so sorry about your friend's sister!!!

Dawn - love the tattoo. Where did you find it?

Hi everyone...

Went to the gym and had a great power walk workout. 60 minutes, 4.25 miles. Felt awesome. Loving my new Nike + ipod thingy that tracks everything for me (distance, time, calories, pace). Love it!!!

Dawn - remember; knowledge is power... arm yourself accordingly.

Sadly, I have not been watching BL because I am usually working out. I don't watch very much TV at all anymore (probably a good thing these days) so I can't comment on the whole Tracy, Shay thing.

Hope everyone is havin a great night. Thinking of those of you dealing with pain tonight.

Ok. I probably find the fact that you've never seen BL about as horrifying as the rest of you feel about me not reading Twilight. Love BL. Love it. We've watched/dvr'd every episode from every season.

So yeah for small improvements and big ones at the same time.

Celebrate every victory, no matter how small they may seem! Just an observation on your food, if I might. I'd suggest trying to get some protein in before lunch. Yogurt maybe.

Wait. Did I miss this somehow? I don't recall this purchase. What exactly did you get?

Nancy--BRILLIANT. Your words to Dawn = perfection. We should all listen.

Cathie--so sorry! What a tragic loss for all involved.

Paula--awesome job!

So, to answer about my day for Lyz...

Riley is fine, thanks. Four teeth extracted, but none were impacted or anything like that, so he is in pretty good shape all things considered. We were in and out of the oral surgeon's really quickly considering they had to knock him out to do the procedure. He'll go to school tomorrow (they were off today anyway).

Cammie, of course, is a different story. Once again, I will take the Bad Mom Award. Ugh.

So in last week's soccer game, she took a tumble. Not a big deal at all. No tears even. Just got up and kept going. Several hours later--like at bed time and the game was in the morning--she said "my wrist hurts." I looked at it. It was a little puffy and a little bruised, but no big deal. She could move it every which way without too much trouble. Again, no tears or anything. I gave her an ice pack and sent her to bed.

Off and on for the past several days she would randomly say "my wrist hurts" while doing little things. Never a real complaint. Finally, earlier today she went to practice piano and she said that she couldn't practice because it hurt her wrist too much. Huh? Called the pediatrician. I explained that she wasn't really complaining much, there was very little swelling and all of that. Hasn't ever shed a tear over this. He suggested to just run her to urgent care and have them look at it. He called ahead and said that there was literally NO ONE there, so it would take no time and at least we would know. Off in the car we went. (I had to uproot poor Riley from the couch and take him to my mom's.) And the pediatrician was right and there was no one at all there. We walked in and they said "This must be Cam..." we didn't even sit down. Went right in. So at least that was good.

Sure enough...dislocated growth plate and she is in a splint! UGH! I feel just awful that I let her walk around all week like that!

And that is how my day went.
