Good morning everyone!
I have really enjoyed reading everyone's lists. We have all made some changes from the better and learned from our younger days!
Thanks for all the input on Shelby. We talk, a lot. I tell her to celebrate her strength and know that the other girls are really jealous that the boys look at her and not them. I also tell her that being strong and an athlete is not a bad thing. I try to give her good examples. The only mags in the house besides Mike's SI are running mags or Self and Fitness mag. She is pretty level headed and in reality, only minor bumps and bruises have occurred in middle school. She is popular, smart, strong and truly beautiful for lots of reasons. I guess I am doing well by her. Thanks for the input and reassurance. I just so don't want her to turn out like me (or at least not wait as long as I did to turn out like me

).
Heart rate: Erica was wrong. I do not disagree with her here. The last debate happened because the heart rate was erratic and way higher than the max rate. This time, it is just a squidge above and perfectly acceptable in the training realm. Ronda, you are fine. Seriously. Nancy's advice to slow down a little...perfect. Erica's advice to use perceived exertion...perfect. Everyone was spot on with their take on the subject. You either like HRM or you don't. I don't. I don't use them at the gym and my Garmin does not have that function, nor would I want it to. I have the opposite problem, my heart rate is low and I would never think I was working hard enough until I dropped dead. Also, bear in mind that, for a HRM to function properly it needs to be on a pulse point (wrist, chest, etcetera). Your hands not the best way to get a heart rate for your body. My hands are hottie hot hot and my heart rate would never be correct there either.
So, slow down (do the program back to back and see how much easier and faster you are the second time around), focus more on form and breathing techniques right now because you will wish you had later, and don't worry about what the HRM says unless you develop an erratic heart beat or you are way above your max heart rate.
Interval runs, yeah, I do them. No I do not like them. This is how I build intervals into my runs. I do 1 mile easy, 2-3 miles at my HM pace (10:15) and then 1 mile easy to finish. I also do a 5 mile run with six 30 second speed bursts at my 5K pace or faster (about 9:15). It is easier on my body than trying to build faster, faster and faster. The other way that I have gotten faster is with hill sprints (hate them too) and by going longer distance in order to go faster. I know it sounds crazy but it works for me.
Hmm, was that it. I cannot remember.
I got my 3 in yesterday. They were forced and done with the Leslie Sansone DVD as it was just too messy outside to run and the TM in the basement is getting more and more not an option for me. It is old and the basement is so dull and dreary that I just cannot face it. Today is girls to the gym day and 4 miles for me with the 1/2/1 interval run. I am slowing my pace right now trying to keep it in check for the marathon. Any finish is a PR so I am shooting for something I can maintain and finish without killing myself. I also spent most of the afternoon shoveling. We have 2 barns (cows) and pole barns (snowmobile storage), a garage, 2 decks and a path to shovel to the outside wood boiler. It takes a lot of time. The snow was not as heavy as I had anticipated and, thankfully, we only ended up with about 8-10. No more snow for the week predicted. I am hoping to be running outside again by Thursday.
I hope everyone is well today and has a super Tuesday!!
