Im so over this Ice Bucket Challenge

Jokes sure! Politics are not allowed. In fact, you may want to edit your post before a mod sees it and you wind up with points. Just an FYI. Upon further inspection, You appear to be new, so maybe you are unaware of the board rules: http://www.wdwinfo.com/guidelines.htm

Thanks, although a little too late.

I'm not sure what or why I would need to edit though...I don't see anything wrong with my reply?

Not the reply...just the picture. ;)

Woops...nevermind. It appears to have gone poof already. The mods are like Roz...watching always watching.

Anyone using the "Waste of water" argument, I hope your kids don't ever play with water guns or water balloons or slip-n-slides. Cause, ya know.

I am amazed and grateful for the phenomenal success of the Ice Bucket Challenge.

I'm also part of the sad fraternity of DISers whose families have experienced ALS. My mother died three years ago. Since she was not the first person in her extended family to have ALS, she likely was among the 5-10% of people who have "familial" ALS. That means my sons and I are at a significantly higher risk than the general population.

I am sorry to hear that. When our relative (DH's actually) was diagnosed, it did make us wonder about whether it could run in families. No one in the family had ever had ALS, so probably not.

I will never forget the day we got that phone call. I started crying at the news, but DH did not fully understand what it meant. He knew very little of ALS, other than it was "really bad." I knew more, because the mother of a dear friend had died of it a few years earlier and I had been aware of Michael Zaslow's fight with ALS. When I explained to DH exactly what it meant and what was coming, he was stunned. The next few years were awful. Our relative's courage and spirit amazed us. But it was a life cut way too short and to watch parents have to bury a child, let alone from such a horrific disease, was heartbreaking.

Former President George W Bush did the Ice Bucket Challenge and challenged Former President Bill Clinton which I think is cool. If you have a chance to watch it, his video is cute, with Laura Bush saying WHY she is not doing the challenge;):)

That was very cute and sort of endearing. I feel a little less curmudgeonly about it :goodvibes.

Holy cow!

$31.5 million dollars raised! Compared to 1.9 million in the same time period last year. :cool1:

Over 600,000 NEW donors to ASLA.

http://www.alsa.org/news/media/press-releases/ice-bucket-challenge-082014.html

Can you imagine what the staff at ASLA is thinking these days? I imagine some of it is "holy crap, now what do we do!??!" I'm sure they had a budget and activities and a strategic plan mapped out for the next year or so that assumed they'd have a few million dollars to work with, not tens of millions. As the CEO said, hopefully we will look back at this and see that it was a game changing moment for ALS.

It's pretty awesome to be a teeny-tiny-small part of something positive like this.

Agreed. I'm pretty sure this level will not continue and they also assume that. I would think they would allocate for future research and funds needed. Although some will say it'll just go into their own pockets. I assume not but what do I know? What's great is what they were able to collect NOW.

Probably already caught, but this article is Satire.

Wow, this is quite the sarcastic site! I don't know which to read first:

  • Saudi Arabia Seriously Considering Allowing Women to Use Forks
  • Russia Bans U.S. Food Imports, Obesity Plummets
  • Kanye Sues Weird Al For Not Parodying His Music

People thought this was a serious news site?

We did the ice bucket challenge and donated money to a dear friend's cancer fund.

It started off last year (that's as far back as I know) as jumping into ice cold water or an ice bath and donate money to a charity of your choice. Like the Polar Bear Club, but as a fund raiser (which may be the initial origin). Posting the videos on social media was to bring about awareness of whatever charity. The "I challenge so-and-so" part is like a game of tag. I can only guess that it morphed into a bucket because of summer and it's easier. ALS became the charity of choice and that's awesome. Do it, don't do it. Donate to charity, or don't. It's about having fun, raising awareness and donations, and connecting people. Hopefully some great things will happen!

Wow, you're over it? Too much effort to watch or scroll by if you don't want to watch a video on Facebook? For those of you who are over it. And the OP I challenge you to watch this video, in its entirety about 7 minutes. About Peter Frates and how this all got started. And then tell me how you are over it. It's amazing how people can be so self centered that they can poo poo something that is making such a difference. No One is forcing you to participate or donate, but to whine and complain about it? Give me a break. Seriously watch this video. Then tell me how you feel. This man was diagnosed at 27 years old. Extortion? Please. Exaggerate much? People will always find something negative, even with something so positive. No one is making you participate or donate. But don't begrudge those that do. One person can make a difference. Mr Frates will leave behind this legacy.

Funny article, actually. I liked this part:

The sorority was fined $500 a person for their Ice bucket challenge video. Totaling in about $25,000 in fines, roughly a third of the tuition for the University. :lmao:

and this part:

Tiffani Tanya Thomas, the president of USC’s Alpha Epsilon Phi chapter, said, “I did it for the ice bucket challenge. It just sucks we got caught and now have to pay all this money.

“I mean, we’re in college so obviously we’re poor. I can’t even. I mean sure, I still have my daddy’s credit card. Who doesn’t?! But I’m saving up for Coachella next year. And molly and Urban Outfitters are like super expensive, ya know? But whatever, it’s worth it.

“Hopefully this fine will help raise even more awareness for suffering students that are learning English as a second language.” Thomas thought ESL, English As A Second Language, and ALS are the same thing.
