Im so over this Ice Bucket Challenge

"i don't want to do it" doesn't mean it's a big deal. It means "i don't want to do it."

and you saying dtex's reason makes sense to you implies to me that you're assigning a value to his reason. like it's good enough for you so therefore others' reasons might not be good enough for you. Did i get that right? :confused3

no

22.9 MILLION DOLLARS as of today, compared with 1.9 million in the same period last year.
Nearly half a million NEW donors to ALS.

http://www.alsa.org/news/media/press-releases/ice-bucket-challenge-081914.html

That's truly astoundingly awesomely amazing.

You don't want to dump ice on your head. Fine. No biggie. But over 20 million additional dollars has been raised for ALS because of the ice bucket challenge. In a world of cynicism and bad news, that's pretty wonderful.

Doesn't seem like I'm the only one that misunderstood your question.

:thumbsup2 I doubt anyone has a problem with that. :thumbsup2

No one is being bullied and Mkrop asked a simple question. There is no need to jump all over them.

When someone makes a judgment that those who don't want to participate are "high and mighty" and all sorts of other insulting descriptions, then that is out of line. If someone doesn't want to participate, skip them and go on. To get all snippy about those who choose to take a pass takes this to a whole different level and detracts from the cause of raising money for ALS. This challenge is supposed to be a fun way to raise money for ALS, as well as bring attention to it. Once you start making negative remarks about those who do not wish to participate, it takes away from the fun, causes hard feelings and the good that was being done will diminish.

If someone thinks the challenge is stupid or beneath them, ignore it and go on. Someone else will happily participate. It's about ALS, not whether or not someone wants a bucket of ice water dumped on them.

For whatever reason, some people will not want to participate. Respect that and move on. They owe no explanation and to demand one will accomplish nothing, save to irritate them even more. If they volunteer an explanation and you think it isn't valid, then really, you are the one with the issue. If they are gritchy and say they are above dumping water on themselves, just go on to the next person.

To make this about whether or not someone will dump ice water on themselves and whether their reason for refusing to do so is "good enough" will suck the momentum out of fundraising for ALS and worse, some people will have a negative association when asked to donate to funding. If it's a challenge, some people will accept and some will decline. It's a challenge, not a mandate.

Very good post. I hope if someone sends me this challenge, I am able to decline without judgement.

It happens and there others who got where I was coming from.

I did not quote anyone when I asked my question, I did not call anyone out here. I asked a general question. DeaverTex was nice enough to answer my question and my followup. It makes sense if you have not stepped foot in a body of water in a gazillion years that you might have a problem with this challenge. HIS answer made sense to me on this thread. No one else here gave me answer and that is fine. I got answer IRL and some of those were quite hypocritical in nature to me like my own brother's I mentioned awhile back.

Very respectfully, I'm asking - what if they don't have an answer that makes sense.

"I don't want to" is all the answer/explanation you will get. Just like "no", it is a complete sentence.

No one else's answer has to make sense to you.

Then MKRop will come to your house, force you to log into your bank account at gunpoint, and make a donation to the charity of HER choice. She'll also eat all your ice cream and unmake your bed while she's there, just for kicks.

I never realized "why don't you want to" was such an insidious and offensive question.

ETA, just because I don't think it can be repeated often enough: Over 20 million dollars and nearly half a million NEW donors to ASLA in the last three weeks because of the ice bucket challenge.

How is "I don't want to" not an answer?

Look, you started off by saying your brother's reason was hypocritical and then you want to know why other wouldn't do it and said several times "what's the big deal?"

You can't see how people could read that as you wanting to decide if a reason is good enough or not?

This is amazing! The originators of these fad should be commended for coming up with something so original and understanding viral marketing so well.

Just saw LeBron James challenge the President of the United States. That's straight hilarity.

Sheesh - I was just wondering because there has been some judgement around this. As long as she doesn't eat my Friendly's chocolate chip ice cream, I wouldn't be too upset with the rest of it ;). And I am not a complainer about the challenge, btw.

Very respectfully, I'm asking - what if they don't have an answer that makes sense.

Than it doesnt make sense, and I get that NO is a complete sentence too. Once again if you have read some of the responses I have seen IRL, on the Today show page or elsewhere, you would see the people I am referring to, who are looking down on the challenge and those who are doing it. I said it before, it is the people who would say almost in their best Thurston Howell voice "Well I never...." that I have issue with.

I just ask for some reasons, some will make sense to me others wont and that is ok. Like I said I dont see the big deal in dumping some water on your head, I just dont. But there have definitely been some high and mighty tones out there if you been reading up on this.

I guess curiosity can kill the cat or get them attacked.:lmao:

I've never been one to jump on the slacktivism bandwagon.

Very respectfully, I'm asking - what if they don't have an answer that makes sense.

I believe the phrases used for those whose answers do not satisfy include:

1. high and mighty
2. on their high horse
3. hypocritical

So your answer had better be good enough. Curiosity seems to be loaded with judgment.

Unfortunately, he has declined. I'm not even an American citizen but I love him but I am disappointed that he declined. If he has time to go on talk shows, he should make time to do this.

I guess curiosity can kill the cat or get them attacked.:lmao:

Clearly! How DARE you ask me or anyone else why. How DARE you be CURIOUS as to what, if any, why someone would find pouring ice water over their head so repulsive! No go and think about what you asked and never speak of it again!

Here's something else I offered up to those I challenged. If they felt pouring a bucket of ice over THEIR own head was repulsive, then I offered for them to pour it over MY head..... in exchange for them to donate $100 to an ALS chapter of their choice (or any other non-profit of their liking). Some still declined any participation or donation... which was their choice and I was ok with it (not that I needed to be).

I thought I would dump ice on them duh;):lmao: Just kidding.

Choclate Chip...no thanks! Now Cookies and cream....:lmao:

I dont want to IS an answer, I keep saying it! I was asking if people were willing to expand on their answer bc I dont get why you would say no. DeaverTex answered.

My brother's answer WAS hypocritical!

And no I did not expect all of this but I will roll with it this is the DIS, it happens.
