I'm so out of the loop - Who can explain 420?

So it seems that a few kids at my DD's school got taken away in cuffs this week - on April 20th to be exact.

They came into school stoned and in possession of various drugs.

They were doing it because it was 4/20. A date which is significant to them and apparently gives them license to come to school high.

I don't ever recall 420 meaning anything when I was in high school.

Who would like to enlighten me on this?

I will add that some say that isn't true (about drug bust/marajuana) being a 420, but that's what many have heard. The other rumor was that it had to do with people saying they would meet at 4:20 to smoke it up after school in the 70s.

Not entirely sure which is right, but in HS (for me 10 years ago) it was believed 420 was related to drug bust or marajuana smoking

No one who celebrates 4/20 here knows its origin, however A LOT of people smoked weed on Wednesday. People who don't do it on other days will do it on that day.

Wow, how long has this been going on? I have only been out of high school for 6 years and I had never heard of it and believe me I knew a lot of kids that did pot, although I wasn't one of them. Guess since I wasn't a pothead I somehow didn't receive the memo or something!

I've been at my school for 17 years and it's been around for at least 10 or 11 being said openly, the pothead kids writing "4:20" on their books, etc. I hate it. I wish these idiots would wise up.

I don't know anything about the pot smoking referrences, but Waco, the OKC Bombing, and Columbine all occured either on or near 4/20.

Tim McVeigh actually chose the date because of Waco.

4:20 as I know it is international weed smoking time. It's referred to a lot in movies. It's a stupid pothead thing, if they happen to see a clock at 4:20 they can say 4:20, time to smoke.

Another odd factoid about 4/20 besides the pot reference, it's also Hitlers birthday. Talk about a day to NOT celebrate!
