I'm making a confession...

I didn't vote for him. But in about 90 minutes he will become my President. I watch every inauguration regardless of who I voted for. It is living proof that our government works, that we can have a peaceable change of power every 4 or 8 years. That if you don't like the current occupant of the office, you can always work to get someone else elected the next time, and know that if you succeed, that the person you worked for will be allowed to take over.

So while I still wish the outcome had been different, I do celebrate the occasion.

:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 Thank you for your post!

I voted for Obama and I certainly understand and appreciate the historical significance of today. So I can understand that the coverage and excitement will be a little over the top and a little more exuberant than past Inaugurations. But for my personal tastes, it does seem a little over done.

But to be honest, in this day and age of all news all the time and the 24-hour news cycle, this seems to be the norm. This isn't the first time an important news story was overdone by the various news agencies.

The 24/7 Obama lovefest is driving me insane. :scared: I have been ready to move forward since November 5, 2008. :coffee: Unfortunately, it seems as if we are on a permanent Obama hype loop. I'm over it and can't even watch tv today, or the news yesterday (was there anything covered other than the coronation, er--I mean, inauguration) for that matter. At least there is HGTV ;) and the like. :happytv: Yesterday, I watched a good bit of House Hunters International--all warm weather locations! :thumbsup2

It is my fervent wish that after today we get back to the business of the country and not the deification and excessive adoration of Obama!

Yes, thank goodness for channels like HGTV. ::yes:: Oh, and DVDs! I'm making good use of the DVDs today!

I don't know, but I thought the same thing when Bush went through his first inauguration. TV was completely saturated with it. :confused3

First off, let me say that I'm truly excited for America today, and I really mean that. We have finally broken the color barrier for the presidency and that is an historical moment. To think that merely 140 plus years after the fall of slavery a black man is now president, or rather will be president. This is also a great day because of the peaceful transfer of power that happens here in America. Also the pomp and ceremony that happens, something I eat up, so I love it when the inauguration comes around. Now having said that, I know that is an inauguration and that this day only happens once every 4 years and more specifically that this is Obama's day, and I wish him well. However, I'm getting tired of the all Obama all the time on TV and everywhere else I turn. It's an Obama love fest and its getting to be a bit much. I'm sure I'm going to be berated by some Obama supports, and that fine, I expect it. And honestly, don't give a rat’s posterior what anyone else thinks. I've talked to Obama supporters here at work who thinks the same way. Anyone else feel this way? If not, I just had to vent. Thanks for listening.

Merely?

It is all history in the making type of thinking but it has been an all weekend thing... I think because of MLK day yesterday and then today it has been over the top.

To the OP - do you have cable or satellite? Change the channel.

I've been waiting for this day since the election but have to admit I've been switching back and forth today between the coverage and my regular court shows. Yes there is an over saturation but if you're truly tired of it turn off your tv or change the channel.

I have been trying to remember the last few inaugurations and, seriously, I do not remember this type of over the top coverage or hype for any of the events prior to and post-inauguration. While we certainly didn't have the coverage in the 60s and 70s that we do now, I seem to remember that Kennedy received, at least for the time, a huge amount of coverage. While the inaugural events of Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and GWBush were certainly extravagant events, I believe this particular one will stand out in memory for a few inaugurations to come.

While it isn't a bad thing that a new president has managed to rally people to his support, the publicity machine is working overtime. He is becoming more high profile in the way some actors oversaturate the public with their appearances in all of the media. At what point does it become undignified? When a president lands his photo on the gossip magazines, I'm thinking we might have hit that point. :sad1:

Agree. And if it were Mccain/Palin it would be the same, too.

I doubt it. . .

I am so sorry I can't... I hope and pray that I am wrong but I am not happy today.

:grouphug: I'm very sad today and extremely worried as well. But I am happy for the Obama supporters, if that makes sense. I wish I shared their excitement, but I also know that our time will come again and it will be our turn to celebrate. :)

Yes, that makes sense. I feel the same way. My sister is a huge Obama supporter. And a HUGE Bush hater. We have agreed to not talk politics. ;)

It makes me sick how much money is being spent today and last night when they keep saying change... well don't you think they should spend a bit less money and not more than other incoming presidents...

Why, yes, I do have cable, and thanks for asking. And yes I have changed the channel. I was merely stating something that irritated me.

I will say this, Obama's been put on this extremely high pedestal, and if he doesn't come through he's going to crash and burn hard.

Ahh ... somehow I knew there was much more to your thread than irritation with the coverage.

ITA with the OP & yes I have watched previous inagurations & no I do not remember it being over the top like it is now.

I can only hope things will die down in the next day or two.

And no I didn't vote for him so he better do a good job or else!

That's probably the best thing to do!

Unfortunately, approximately one half of the US is always going to be disappointed while the other half is happy. Our turn will come again. :) I know that these four years won't be as good as the last four were for me personally, but I'll just keep my eye on the future. :goodvibes
