"I'm living the dream!"

Last night my husband and I had dinner at Applebees. We were seated by the hostess, then our waiter appeared at our table and, with a lot of enthusiasm, announced, "Hi, I'm Carl! I'm living the dream! What can I get you to drink!"

I looked at the waiter and kind of chuckled. Honestly, I didn't know what to say. I was waiting for my husband to make some kind of joke (he's actually really good at putting his foot in his mouth) but he passed. When Carl left to get our drinks, my husband and I pondered what he meant by "living the dream!"

We wondered if it was something that Applebees requires their waiters/waitresses to say (although it was the first time we'd ever heard anyone say it). I thought maybe it had something to do with the Arizona Cardinals shirt he was wearing, but since the team isn't winning many games this season, I figured that couldn't be the reason. My husband said maybe he was being sarcastic. If you've ever seen the movie, "Waiting", you'll understand!

What would be your take on this? Just seemed like an odd thing to say.

I'd say he was being sarcastic...

Since you mentioned it, it sounds like something the guy who "needs" the $100 tip "more" in Waiting... would say.

I take it as he's insecure, perhaps, and so he makes fun of it to make himself feel better.

Oh, they are so annoying! I have an old friend from high school who, occasionally, asks me if I am "happy with my life" and if I am "still enjoying my current employment" and "if it pays enough".

I think it is just a saying kids that age say. I've heard my 22 yo nephew say it more than once.

He was definitely being sarcastic.

BTW, I love Waiting. Anyone who has ever worked/waited on tables at a restaurant, would find that movie hysterical.
