$162!!!!! I had 2 people who always come to my yard sales come tonight to get first dibs and between them thay bought a bunch!! I hope to get about $500 from this sale. I have a bunch of clothes that I'm selling, so I might just make it. i also have a few big toys, a Little Tykes slide, a Little Tykes picnic table, a Little Tykes sandbox with the sandand toys and a Barbie playhouse. I have a bunch of smaller toys as well. We will be relocating this summer and I needed to get rid of a bunch of stuff. I'll get my girls new stuff after we're settled in our new home. It will give us some things to get them for XMas. Wish me luck!!!! I'll post tomorrow afternoon with the total.

that happened to my mom last year! She was setting some stuff out the night before and people stopped by! LOL

Oh My! I am in NC also. Anywhere close to Lexington?

We're about 2 hours from Lexington in Laurinburg. Too bad you're not closer. You could join me tomorrow morning as my family will still be asleep when most of the sale goes on!

I'm going to be aprt of my neighborhood sale tomorrow & I always have trouble pricing the clothing. Any tips?

I always sell hot dogs, water & soda, I make most of my money on this stuff.

Happy $elling!

I priced my clothes 50cents for seperates, $1 for dresses, $1 for Gymboree, Osh Kosh and Good Lad seperates, $3 for Gymbo ,GL and OSHKOSH dresses. I know I could do better on ebay, but I tried to sell lots of clothes and they didn't go for any more a piece than this. I also asked lots of people who actually go to yard sales and they said that those are the going rates. Of course we are in a somewhat depressed area as businesses keep leaving, so maybe where you live, youcan get more.

The total is $593! That's going to next years Disney fund as we can't go this year. I sold all the Little Tykes toys, the Barbie playhouse, but not the baby doll hospital or the kitchen. I will have another sale before we move as I'm sure that I'll find plenty more to sell. I still have 5 big boxes of little girl's clothes left! A lot of Gymboree, Good Lad and OshKosh. I guess people don't want to pay the little extra for brand names. That's OK, I beat my goal by $93. Hooray!!!!

I'd list each piece of Gymboree separately on Ebay, not as lots... offer them separately & offer a shipping discount... that is if they are in excellent condition though... I made so much $$$ on our used Gymboree clothing it wasn't funny considering they were used!

By the way, that is a GREAT total!!! I can't wait for the day I can sell my daughter's doll houses!!!

We will be having a big moving sale soon.
This was my ds's suggestion--sell all those canned goods from the pantry, unexpired, of course, along with unopened toiletries such as toothpaste, etc.

Since I usually end up giving the canned goods away before a move I might as well get something for them!

Also, do you think opened perfume, hand cream, etc would sell? I have a ton of Estee de Lauder perfume, really expensive, most opened but hardly used. I certainly can't take it with us and wouldn't be able to use it up before moving, maybe I could sell it for something? would opened, slightly used items like that sell? The only other thing I could do is toss them, seems a shame, still quite good.

How about opened, used paint, still 3/4 full? There again, can't take that with us:rotfl: It might sell for a $1-$2 per can, have about 10 cans, maybe an extra $10-$20?

How abut door knobs? We replaced all the door knobs with upgraded handles when we bought our home, have about 20 nice, almost new brass plated door knobs. What should I price them at?

I know I've read about selling bottles of cold water for about 25 cents each, how about coke or soda? Maybe some brownies? I'd buy such items while garage sailing.

What are some other non-standard items that might sell? I usually think of the typical stuff I see at garage sales, usually toys, furniture, books, clothes, knick knacks, etc., all of which I'm planning to sell, but things like slightly used perfume, open paint cans, canned goods, how do they sell?

My biggest problem is the kids toys. Most are not worth taking, but the kids won't part with them. I'm sure they will just be ignored when we arrive, most are outgrown anyways. Of course, they can't get rid of everything, and I realize its a security issue for them, this is the first move they can recall, others they were babies and don't remember. The hardest thing is all their stuffed animals. Both kids have literally a mountain of stuffed toys, there's so many we used them to make a "guest bed" for their cousins last week when visiting! But they insist those are their friends (the animals, not the cousins) and I can't be a "meany" and make them get rid of them. If I could just get rid of a few--but I can imagine the tears seeing their "friends" being sold at a garage sale. So I'm starting to inventory/pack stuffed friends, wash them in the wash machine, pack with some Bounce sheets to keep them fresh, I figure I have at least 10 wardrobe boxes already, but they don't weigh much.

Well, any other ideas for what sells at moving sales? I need to get rid of everything I can--here's another idea--two toilets! We bought 2 new toilets never installed, can't return because don't have receipts. They're still in the box. I really think wherever we go will have toilets:confused3 No need to bring our own:rotfl2: Why we bought them in the first place--they're the extra long type, or as my dh calls them, the big and tall man's seat:rotfl: Well, he never got around to installing them, so I guess he managed all these years! Think that would sell?

How about telephones, tv's, toaster oven, microwave, kitchen appliances,

What a mess if that stuff doesn't sell and I have to haul it all back inside then to the Goodwill:scared:

Well, also, what about china? I have a dessert set that belonged to my mother, never used, still in the original packaging, she bought it in England many years ago, but never used so no emotional attachment, would rather get a few dollars and not worry about transporting it. Would it bring a fair price, or should I try selling it on Ebay, or perhaps at a consignment shop?

Any other ideas?

We do a yard sale every year. People will buy ANYTHING - you have nothing to lose by putting it out. One year I sold an broken answering machine, I put on it that it was broke, I sold it for $1 - some people will buy it and try and fix it. My DH put old socks in my bag of clothes to sell, I didn't realize it until I emptied the bag, someone bought them to use as rags!

Last year we had half cans of paint - that was one of the lst. things that went.

I have always sold half bottles of purfume and lotions - always sell. The stuff you think won't sell does sell.

We also just moved - my DS (7) has this little plastic table, he really is too big for it. For some reason he loves this table. When we were moving he had to take this table with him. There was stuff I would have liked to have gotten rid of, but I also felt like it was a "security" thing with him. I pretty much let him take what he wanted. This was his lst. move and it was out of state.

We are having a yard sale in 2 weeks!

It's funny what sold. I had lotion and perfume also that was used and people bought it. I made prize packs with happy meal toys and little trinkets from trat bags and got $15 for them. There were a lot of them and they were large! My girls' old shoes also sold. Believe me, they weren't in perfect shape. All their old undies sold as well. Some ladies came back 3 times during the sale to buy more. They had X amount of dollars to spend, went to other sales and came back to buy more.
Of course there were those who tried to barter down on things too. I didn't budge this sale since I'll have one again in a month or two before we move.
My girls also had trouble parting with stuffed animals. My 7 YO didn't even want to pack any up because they're her friends as well. it's funny that other kids think that way too!

What did you sell the half used paint and perfume for? Did you do anything to make it look nice--besides washing it, of course? Like maybe put the half-used perfumes, lotions, etc in a basket, or pretty cellophane bags (have a ton of them), or perhaps tie up with a ribbon?

I'm surprised to learn that old socks sell. I have two bargage bags full of unmatched socks, maybe I'll try to sell them as rags. Also sell old towels, sheets, unless I'm using them as packing material.

Before I moved 1 and a half years ago, I sold opend paint(about half full) for 2 dollars a can

How did you display the paint? I was thinking of painting a small stip of wood/paper with the paint and placing on the can to keep people from opening it over and over again. Or maybe paint the price with the paint--or maybe I'm thinking about it too much?:confused3

If any of the perfume / lotions are discontinued, I would check out what they are going for on eBay (search completed listings.) I sold a used bottle of Donna Karan Chaos for over $65! It isn't made any more, and hard to come by - the buyer was thrilled!!

Way to go on your yard sale!

We had one today and we made about $550. We always do yard sales for extra money. In the past we've done yard sales for IVF expenses and adoption expenses. This year - we did it for the Disney trip.

$550 will buy our tickets. I'm so excited!

What we didn't seel got donated to Goodwill.

Speaking of partially used cans of paint. My yard sale was partially in the garage as people kept coming all morning and I never got to take everything out into the yard. I had the tables set up so that they wouldn't go behing them to our area where we store some items including the extra paint for our house. I had 2 people ask about the paint. The one man even went behind the tables, he had to move them to get back there and opened the paint! I wasn't happy about that. The people also tried to buy my daughters' outside toys such as jump ropes, watering cans and bubbles that were in a bin in a non selling area. My girls were a bit upset about that and took their toys back! I didn't stop them since I clearly told people that bin of things was not for sale!
I guess I could have soild the paint, but thought we made need to do some touch ups before put the house on the market.

Sometimes too people are just after the bottle, I will check to see if any are discontinued brands and not sell them too low. Thanks for the tip!

Hmmm.....do you think used mini blinds would sell? They're the cheap aluminum type, standard length, custon-cut to our windows, but our windows are a standard size. Nothing wrong with them, we just took them down to replace with upgraded ones. I was going to throw them out, maybe I could get, say, $5 for large ones, $2-$3 for small/medium ones?

Obviously I've never had a yard sale before and don't know what sells or how to price items. Perhaps I should go shopping at other yard sales to see what's going for what. Usually by the time I arrive at a yard/garage sale its late afternoon and most is just the leftover junk, trinkets going for 25 cents, etc. I really need to get out early just to see what really sells, I might be surprized!

However, I'll probably come home with more stuff when I'm trying to get rid of stuff:lmao:

Also, how many people do you need to run a sale? Obviosly I can't do it all by myself. DH might be out-of-town, may be starting a new job soon and might not be able to be here to help. I have 2 kids, 10 and 11, they could help, they do understand money and how to make change. I intend to price things to make change easy, like $1, $2, not 99 cents, but 99 cents catches someone's eye easier than $1. Well, it would be a great learning experience for the kids, we could practice playing "store" and making change, using a calculator, etc.

Do you really think I could pull it off with just me and the kids? I've had some friends offer to "help" but they would probably want a portion of the proceeds nobody works for free! I do have one friend who lives in an apt, no place to have a yard sale, perhaps she and her bf could help in exchange for the location, have to have it understood who divies up what, usually that type of thing gets sticky.

Our area doesn't get heavy traffic for yard sales, but rather it seems a trickle all day, so probably I could handle it with the kids.
