What do you do when you know that you're going to have a small number of points left? Do you try to give them to somebody to see if they can use them? Is there someplace to donate them?

I think I'll end up with either 6 or 7 points left.

Thanks,

Lisa

There is a place you can donate them. I believe it is the make a wish foundation. I just recently saw something on one of the boards. Probably member services would know something about this.

i don't believe you can donate "points" but if you have enough to book a nights stay or two, you might be able to donate the reservation.

otherwise, if you haven't used up your transfer for the year, you might be able to find another DVCer who needs a few pts...

No - there is no method available to donate a few stray points. They would need to be transferred to an account in order to be used and only one transfer per year is allowed. There is no program available thru DVC to manage such an account.

You can donate reservations made using points to organizations like Make-A-Wish or Give-Kids-The-World, but they have no way to use points.

Since the points are banked, you cannot transfer them (even if you haven't used your one transfer for the year).

So your only option would be to borrow enough points to make a reservation for one or more nights, and then rent or give away the reservation.

Sounds like there should be such a system. Seems like a win-win for everyone. Members can get rid of a few extra points without the aggravation of making small reservations or just abandoning the points and get the satisfaction of helping some one. Make a wish foundations (I know there are several of them) get top-notch larger (and sometimes more appropriate) accommodations. Disney frees up some of the rooms that they are (I assume supplying at a significantly reduced cost) to the wish foundations. DVC and Disney get public relations bonus and one more selling feature for DVC.

My wife did initiate something similar to this at the hospital where she works. For fellow employees who were facing major medical problems with need for extended time off, other employees could gift some of there vacation time to them. Initially the “bean counters” had problems with it, but in the end it was to good an idea to turn down.

I am sure it would have the same bureaucratic challenges and issues with POS but when it is the right thing to do they can always be dealt with. With the nature of the people who come to WDW and the DVC community in particular it could make a big difference in a lot of children’s lives (100,000 potential donators).

Rules are made to be changed when it is for the right reason, and what better reason than this!!!

Sound like it might be a good one to put up on a separate thread as a poll (I have never tried to do that). Anyone want to help with this?

Disney already participates heavily in programs like these (and more). While the administration might seem to be simple, it would require staffing as well as computer system changes to accept and track these points. In the past, these organizations have typically used donated reservations made using points to provide accommodations for their staff since they have other sources for accommodations for their recipients - and those accommodations often have been provided by Disney directly.

Will the membership as a whole agree to the additional costs associated with such a program? Can such a program actually be used in the manner actually desired by individual members? While it can't hurt to suggest such a program to DVC (it has been suggested on this forum for years already), don't expect any quick response.

In the meantime, any members wanting to contribute to such a program could consider renting their extra points and donating the proceeds to the charity of their choosing.

If these foundations have all the resources they need then yes it would be a waste of time. Does anyone know if this is the case? Administration would incur costs because these donations would probably have to be done “manually” to have them not appear as transfers. Other than that each Wish foundation could just have an account from which accommodations could be booked for either their staff or clients. My guess is that it would take 1 MS person to handle it. So say 50-60k a year with benefits? (50 cents per member per year). If it is too much for DVC to justify as a marketing expense, then maybe it worthwhile for the foundations to underwrite the cost. I know I would be happy to kick in $10 with my points donation to defray the costs, just to not have the aggravation of having to deal with making a reservation for someone else and knowing that my point went for a good purpose.

This is what is great about a “community” forum like this, it gives a chance to explore and develop ideas like this, most are duds but occasionally a great one gets enacted.

I am very new to this forum so does anyone know of any “deal breakers” in the previous threads?

Did anyone ever get a “package” ready and present it to DVC management?

Were any polls done on this issue in the past?

Thanks

So I figured that I'd be about 12 points shy of doing a standard view room @ Paradise Pier during Super Value season, but what if I've already borrowed all of my 2009 points?

I'm thinking that it would be best to rent 12 points from another member and even if it costs me $120, I'd still be WAY under what it would cost me to buy a hotel room outright.

Since I'm about 45 min from DLR, I could have a great mid-week or take a Monday off of work and spend a Sunday night there.

Oh I can't wait for the 175 days until we go on our first DVC vacation to count down.
